I really don't know. I read someone saying that the Habs want him around so he can get used to the environment and the team/staff.

If he stays around and trains at their facility until the new season starts (AHL or NHL), it kinda makes sense.

If he bolts back to Russia after the Habs are done, it doesn't make any sense to have him with the team just so he skates around with the black aces.

he has 3 years to adjust. i could see if it was a euro UFA that burning a year gives a team an edge for signing a player. its bad asset management to throw away a year on an ELC in a hard cap league. especially now with a flat cap for the next few seasons.

hawks had a similar situation with one of their draft choices. course he isn't russian but there is still a few months before next season starts anyway.
