Course ... things change dramatically if the Hawks are fortunate to snag the #1 pick and have to find a spot in the lineup for Laffy. That makes Nylander a much easier loss to take.

I'm a little confused about the idea that Saad would be eligible for the Seattle expansion draft - isn't the draft after the 2020/21 season and isn't that when Saad's contract expires - meaning he isn't the Hawks' 'property' that needs to be protected/exposed? Maybe the thinking is that it's only applicable if Saad re-signs with the Hawks - but then he either signs for a cap friendly deal in which case the Hawks would probably want to protect him or he signs for a not-so-cap-friendly deal in which case Seattle probably wouldn't select him and the Hawks would be stuck with the contract - not to mention Saad and his agent will know what's going on and demand a NTC. It seems unlikely he would be part of the expansion draft considerations. What am I missing?

- EbonyRaptor

I'm with you, he would be a FA. Maybe I'm wrong here but the expansion draft is after next season? Not the playoff season about to start.

If they’re as successful as VGK was in their first three season, I’m sure they won’t mind.

Still no cup in Vegas. Will be interesting to see how they draw when they suck!

You would think so, but time after time the gm's spend spend spend, hence the hard cap era

Do you know how fast the NHLPA would file a grievance? The owners would not back this up either after they just signed to extend labor peace for another 4 years. You have a better chance of just wishing COVID disappears than Seabrook as a Kraken
- LAHawk

he would never get taken is my point. its 1 of the 3 worst contracts in the NHL. with a flat cap Seatle is going to have so many good UFA options for there money. why would take a guy who makes 7 but is worth 1.5. hypothetically you could sign SAAD for the $5 Mil for 4 years as a UFA. you could just tell him if he does not wave you are going to have to buy him out. he would then lose some salary.

Sure you can its called credit or leveraging your home to buy things.

Hawks have shown trade young promising player with an overpaid front loaded contract player to free up cap space to a team that is financially struggling and can use young cheap assets to reach cap floor

And how does a buyout help the Hawks cap situation? Next year they gain a whole $300K in cap savings if they buy out Seabrook before next season. So if you add a player on a minimum contract, it will cost the Hawks $500K more to carry Seabrook's buyout cap hit, and the minimum salaried player.

Since Seabs has 4 years left on his contract, a buyout means the Hawks would be on the hook for 2/3 of his remaining bse salary. The only year there is a significant buyout savings to the cap is in 21-22 where the Hawks would get $3,3 mil. in relief, but the next year the relief only is $300K again.

Seabs has made $73 million so far with his NHL contracts. Buying him out hurts the Hawks worse cap wise, then it will to "punish" him by threatening a buyout.

Those teams don't exist now. One team needs to get to the floor, Seattle. They can hold every other team up for a ransom.

Correct.

He's exempt, which is great that the Hawks don't have to protect him.

- Tyler Cameron

Regarding Kubalik's exemption status. I know 2 year pro players are exempt from being drafted and next season will be his 2nd NHL season, but does his pro year(s) in Europe count toward the 2 years? If so, he's not exempt.

I avoid it, but still end up there 8-10 days a year. It’s getting worse every year too.
