Great news, but we'll be saying goodbye to a bunch of Isles over the next 2 years to make cap.

Most of the league will be doing that.

But yeah, I anticipate a lot of roster turnover in the next three years. Think the entire fourth line will be gone when their respective contracts are up. Wouldn't be surprised to see Leddy moved in the offseason. Maybe a Komarov buyout coming too. Something will have to give with Ladd as well...not really sure what though. That deal is 100% buyout-proof.

Not quite the $5 mill AAV that a lot of people on here were scared of either...

Here we go again... lol. He is making 2 mill.. instead of the $5 mill all you Cap experts had him getting... If he plays as well as we all hope then he will get $4 or $5 mill a year.. so you move Varly. Next year with him as our Back-up 1b instead of Greiss we just got 1.3 mill cap room on the goalies.

Well he certainly wasn't getting $5M having played zero NHL games. His KHL stats are video-game numbers, but it's still not a sure thing he's a superstar in the NHL. He's betting on himself with the one year extension and the Isles are going to get a cheap year of him (cheaper than Greiss' current deal) and then hopefully by the next negotiation they'll have cleared some money off the books to accommodate a raise.

https://www.capfriendly.com/ With 27 guys signed the Isles are 23 out of 31 teams in terms of Cap issues currently. We have never been NEAR the top 10 and yet every year we have guys talking about our cap issues.

We don't have cap issues...

"I’m not trying to be negative here, because Sorokin signing is a win in itself. But if you think the Islanders are in a bad spot with the salary cap now, just wait until they’d have to re-sign Sorokin. It’s not unreasonable to think he could also command somewhere between $4 and $5 million on a short-term deal, just based on what he’s been able to do in the KHL."

Ben's last article on Sorokin ...

I'm not saying nobody thought it, but it was never going to happen. Not with the flat-cap and no NHL games under his belt.

Just can’t have it get into Carey Price territory on his next deal if he performs as advertised. I’ll never be on board with paying a goaltender that much. Never works out...

This works out pretty well on Expansion draft too. Next year if Sorokin is as good as we hope they can leave Varly exposed for expansion draft too. Having Varly with him for a year is huge too. they know each other can help with getting kid situated..etc.

Lou and Barry had a plan and it's coming together nicely.

who do the Isles protect?

Current NHL teams can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie, under the following conditions.

* All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits.

* All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward protection limits.

In addition, all NHL teams must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the draft:

* One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* One goalie who is under contract in 2021-22 or will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current contract immediately prior to 2021-22. If a team elects to make a restricted free agent goalie available to meet this requirement, that goalie must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the team's protected list.

I thought that .. sht. Does Boychuk still have a NMC or was it only the first 4 years or something?

Nobody has a NMC right now. 5 full no-trades (which mean nothing for expansion draft) and two partial NTC's (Komarov/Boychuk). Boychuk had a full NMC for the first four seasons and a partial NTC for the last three.

Barzal may have a NMC by then but he's getting protected no matter what.

lol Calm down. All I did was state the obvious.....to anyone who can do math.

If you really feel the Isles can re-sign Griess, Toews, Pulock AND Barzal in 2020 without losing a bunch of current players, you should be GM of the Isles.
