I had the same response, and it made me genuinely question what I know about American politics. Looking at that list at face value I felt that probably 7 of those states went Republican in their last federal election, but I also felt like a few of those 7 have Democratic governors. As those cities would be major population centres in their respective states, bizarre to see all the cities Democratic.

(frank)ed if I know. 🤷‍♂️

So which one is Liberal and which one is Conservative?
And which one of those is Trump?

Okay, wait.

There are cities in Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri, and Tennessee that not only have Democratic mayors... But have had them for numerous decades running?

Wow.

True the population would dictate what your saying is true.
If you dig a little deeper though and look at interactions with the Police it's actually quite close despite the huge difference in population so based on that it shows whites are actually more likely to get killed by the Police based on interactions.
I'm sure you'll want to say it's racist that blacks have more interactions with the Police.
Based on my job I would actually say you might be correct. Would that be the fault of the Police or mayors of the Cities.

I went to one of my favourite pubs in the world on the weekend: the Olde Angel Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I don't think they used to have a patio (I may be wrong), but anyhoo, they had set up a really nice, big one in a yard two doors up the street.

Damn, it just felt so good to sit down with the famn damily and have a meal at a restaurant.

It almost felt normal.

- Atomic Wedgie

Not gonna lie, was not impressed with the food there.
But the 2/3 hotel rooms above the bar are cool and the live music was sweet.

there is a lot of misinformation out there. most people aren't like you - they don't question what they currently know and reconsider things.

most have a a different tendency.

IMO, its not one or the other. Police training and education is a problem, criminal laws are a problem, social and economic policies are a problem, and of course our historical biases and fears are a problem, etc......

That's why some informed change will be really good.

Just following debates on policing in the US over the past few months, I’m not sure Mayors have a lot of direct control although it may differ city to city. In Minneapolis, the city council has taken control of the police budget to advance a major reform agenda that the mayor opposes.

I have a fairly decent knowledge of politics, I'm not a political science major by any stretch but I've never been ignorant to it either. I have an open mind and am always trying to learn.

But the only thing I'm learning through this conversation is that the American system is an even bigger poop show than I ever though, and that's mostly due to their complete cluster (frank) of a structure.

Awesome place to retire, or just visit. It's not the East Coast, but has a similar charm.

Your capacity to miss the point should be surprising. It’s not, it’s just depressing. We’re discussing whether mayors have real authority over policing. If you want to pay attention, great. If you want to keep proving your quote, carry on.

de-funding the police was not an issue that anyone ran on.

that fact the city councils/mayors don't agree is not surprising.

the city council is trying every tactic to take power away from the mayor in this case. The charter of the city gives full authority to the mayor over police funding; except for requiring the city have a minimum officer to population ratio.

It's almost like people were smart enough to put in safeguards to prevent a bunch of loony tunes from getting rid of the police on a whim.

I'm not familiar with the situation in those regions specifically, but generally speaking don't urban populations tend to move centre-left? So the mayoralty of those cities may skew differently than other political levels in the state. Kind of like how downtown Toronto municipal politics will be different than Queens Park or Parliament Hill.

I don't know who controls the cops in the those cities. I assume it's the mafia.

I would agree with that assessment, however my assumption would be that despite being urban centres... If they're in the deep south, they elect Republican governments at all levels.

Not so unlike in Canada, Alberta tends to elect Conservative governments at all levels. There have been deviations from that expectation (even when the blue wave went off this federal election there is still an NDP seat in Edmonton), but it would surprise me if I found out that all Calgary/Edmonton ridings had voted NDP for generations... For example.

Woo hoo, going in for blood work, including a full STI screening. I haven't shared that many needles with sex workers lately, but it's always a little tense getting a result for one of the serious tests. Although, as you get older just the standard blood tests start to get high stakes. I'm excited because I like to celebrate my healthy eating by getting a Chicago-style hot dog and a poutine after the test. Also once that STI test comes back clean I'm gonna go flying off the top ropes on my new special lady friend.

That's exactly the example I was thinking of too, Edmonton as a - relatively - progressive island in mostly Reform Alliance Wildrose Conservative Alberta. I am as surprised as you by the mayoral results in those American cities.

I still can't believe there was a provincial NDP majority government in Alberta. When the oil market tanked they found their social safety net religion. Funny innit.
