Can you cut and paste for the poor? - Garnie
The article is massive. Here is the Leaf section.
28. Toronto Maple Leafs
2020-21 salaries: $77.1 million
RFAs estimate: $5 million
Dead money deals: Phil Kessel retained ($1.2 million)
Notable unsigned UFAs: Tyson Barrie, Cody Ceci, Jason Spezza, Kyle Clifford
Projected cap space: -$0.63 million
Be honest: A lot of you probably came here thinking this team would be at the bottom of the list, no?
They’re close, but the situation isn’t as dire as it might seem on the outside. In part because they have so many expiring contracts. And few RFAs angling for big dollars.
That’s a welcome change for GM Kyle Dubas, but that doesn’t mean his life will be easy this offseason. Even if they squeeze Ilya Mikheyev, Travis Dermott and the other RFAs into really cheap contracts, this team is still over the cap in most plausible scenarios. Someone will have to go. Multiple someones if they want to improve the blue line.
Maybe it’s as simple as trading away Andreas Johnsson or Kasperi Kapanen, putting impressive rookie Nick Robertson into the NHL, and going cheap and young on the back end?
Maybe – but somehow I doubt it. And if the Leafs are smart, they’ll likely try to use the fact that so many UFAs will get squeezed this offseason to their advantage, finding a way to be one of the teams bidding for those searching for bargain basement contracts a few days in. |

So many guys are going to be free agents - it's a chance to completely remake their roster, filling it with plenty of guys who will be looking for any contract they can sign. - Atomic Wedgie

I wonder if the "free buyout" was discussed as part of the negotiation on the extension. Leafs are actually better off without it. No bad contracts ...knocks on wood. - The Law
There was 'talk round these parts that it could have benefited the Leafs: we'd take a bad contract from a small-market team + something to make it worth our while, and then spend the money to buy out the contract.

Rielly-Tanev
Muzzin-Gudas
Sandin-Lehtonen
Holl-Liljergen
If you can sign Gudas and Tanev for 1-2 years at a combined 4 million.
Trade Kerfoot/Johnnson for a cheaper center and sign cheap 1 year deals(Galchenyuk, Thornton, Grigensens)
Are they better?

Tampa and Islanders 2 worst cap hell teams. - RogerRoeper
Tampa's situation is not ideal. I think it's safe to say that Killorn is gone while his stock is high and he only has partial trade protection. He's replaceable with one of our pipeline youngsters on a much smaller contract. So there's $4.45m off the books. He's locked down for 3 more seasons at a reasonable cap hit, so he has some value.
I'd like to see Gourde gone, but nobody wants that contract even if he waives his NTC protection. One or more of the following will have to go : Palat, Johnson. I'd rather keep Palat in a perfect world, but it might be time to move both former members of the Triplets line, maybe as a pair. That would be $5.3m and $5m off the books. Get rid of Gourde (Seattle with a sweetener?) and that's another $5.1m
Luckily for Tampa, they have some good talent in the pipeline at forward. Foote is about ready to step up on D. Schenn, Bogosian, and Shattenkirk come off the books. And only Shattenkirk will be missed of those three.
It's not as dire as it looks, IF one or two guys can be induced to waive their NTC's, which Tampa has a history of doing. Not sure if JB has the same mojo as Steve Yzerman though.

A racist incident decades in the past when it wasn't exactly considered racist is a little different than a racist record in the present... But sure.

Decades? The guy couldn't answer if he's done it in the last week, month, year and how many times. Someone asked him when was the last time, how many times, and how often do you do this, the guy could not recall. He could still be doing it... Might be his fetish. |

Leafs are fine. I think they basically have three options.
Currently they'll have about 4.4 milly and have Mikheyev, Dermott and two 4th liners to re-sign. That'd give them 12 F, 6 D, 1 extra and 2 Goalies.
1. Sign Mikheyev, Dermott and a couple of 4th liners and let it roll. Doubt it can happen for 4.4 or less unless Dermott takes a 1 yr for cheap.
2. Shop one (or more) of the second tier guys (Kapanen, Kerfoot, Johnsson) to free up space for the re-signings and a modest improvement on D. Robertson might be ready to slide into a top 9 role or maybe Engvall.
3. They try to sign or trade for a big target on the blue line. If so then it'll be one of the big 4 that has to get moved.
I'm thinking it's door number 2 all day especially if Robertson is pushing into the lineup. |
