"High anxiety levels are a bigger problem than a new highly infectious pathogen that is transmitted through aerosols and kills approx 0.2-0.4% of all infected and leaves many chronically ill"
Great take for a maroon - MaximusAurelius
obesity and mental health are 2 of the biggest health issues.
If there were less obese people, many less would die.
If there weren't so many mental issues, people would be able to have an adult conversation without resorting to insults to prove a point they don't have. |

The CDC's best estimate is that the death rate is 0.4% and the hospitalization rate is 3.4% (Less than half the 19 times stated hospitalization rate).
https://www.cdc.gov/coron...-scenarios-2020-05-20.pdf
The use of those 2 made up numbers (1% death rate & 19x hospitalization rate) alone creates a completely unreliable and grossly over-exaggerated scenario.
Using an assumption that 100% of people will COVID-19 under any circumstance further exaggerates the stupidness of the numbers. Complete garbage.
You should have the balls to delete that tweet of fake numbers instead of adding fuel to anxiety levels with lies.
The real problems that COVID-19 is revealing are literally being masked.
Social issues, overall health (including the number of people with the disease of obesity) and the state of mental health (particularity high anxiety levels) are the real issues that need to be dealt with.
COVID-19 will pass. The shame in all this is that nothing will be done to address the issues that allowed COVID-19 to be an issue in the first place. - Tumbleweed
Any numbers thrown around right now are estimates, anecdotal, or educated guesses. The body of peer-reviewed research on novel Covid-19 is growing, but it will take decades to fully understand all of the ripple effects on health and society.
The knuckle-dragging science-deniers who are making all of this worse NEED some mother-loving fear in their lives to straighten the phuck up and act right. Some scary tweets are better than both my boots up their selfish asses.
And with Trump's people muzzling the CDC, I no longer trust what comes out of the CDC. I am watching the latest releases on Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, and other academic research sources. And the news coming from the academic journals tracks with the overall sentiment of the tweet in question.

We know that. If there were fewer guns. If people didn’t drink and drive. All these things can be true.
These problems will be still be problems after this pandemic has come and gone. And they’ll be problems when we face the next pandemic. Why should we care any less about the pandemic because there are other public health problems?
Also, it’s nice to see your commitment to civil discourse. |

in addition to these - some views and findings from people 'on the ground' (doctors, nurses etc.) can be very helpful as well.
already in march it was clear that chronically ill people on immunesuppresant medications (e.g. people with rheuma, cystic fybrosis, etc.) were less prone to develop even light covid19 disease - let alone severe covid19 disease.
around the same time, it was already clear that smokers were less likely to develop severe covid19 disease (still not clear what the potential mechanism behind that is).
you are definitely right to point out that long-term effects of this new pathogen are still very much unknown (obviously) - and any 'findings' should be taken with a grain of salt.

Are mental health and obesity killing 5000+ people a day? Genuinely curious. |

hypertension. diabetes. etc. etc. are the common underlying diseases that associated to dying from covid-19.
these diseases are strongly associated to excessive weight.
people need to be healthier. if people were healthier, less people die form covid-19.
this should not be controversial and really should be the focus of how to minimize the impact of the next pandemic. |

There are lots of reasons to focus on those diseases. We should also be doing more to address poverty which is a major driver of obesity and other health disorders including mental health related problems.

Plus a healthy defensive lineup. Clb won’t know what hit them....maybe not hit, but stick check them. |

newsflash - communism doesn't work.
the interesting thing here is that most liberals actually believe they are helping the poor, while their 'solutions' in fact put the poor in deeper trouble.
i truly think you should read into sowell's views on this - or read 'please stop helping us' from Jason riley. |

I don’t think it will be quite the normal grinding playoff hockey we normally see. Part of that is because teams are worn out and also it takes a bit of time to get defensive systems in place. |
