Bill,
I greatly respect your hockey knowledge and insight. I hope you are right.
I'm fine with being a minimalist on analytics. I'm even optimistic that an old school communication style might be good for these kids in the short term. I just don't see how a wide open offense but defensively weak style is going to work well with a team that's has a huge lack of defensive talent. - Queenie_5_hole
My god your a pathetic kiss a$$ lol. Must suck being a hockey opinionist that doesn’t know hockey or cares to . Maybe you can pay Bill to ghost opinion for you. Jacka$$. |

I think I realized the appeal of Trump is that if you're dumb enough to vote for him, he still gives you the impression that you yourself are smart enough to be president.
Nothing else explains the complete lack of reality exhibited in this form. - James_Tanner
Tanner, you're still posting that he committed treason to win the election! You've disqualified yourself and are showing complete arrogance by attributing a lack of reality to others? The level of your lack of self awareness is history making. You don't have the grasp of the basic facts but question other people's intelligence? It's hysterical. It's also very sad that one human being can be that ignorant. |

Committed treason to win presidency, was impeached, is the single most corrupt politician in USA history, over 40 sexual assault complaints, including rape and including stuff with kids. Blatantly racist. Single worst Covid response in the world. Suffering from dementia. Worst economic collapse since depression, sky high unemployment, hated throughout the world, destroyed America's reputation, despised by literally all educated people.
The worst part is how dumb you actually have to be to think he did anything good. - James_Tanner

The proof is in that Tanner missed the mark on his top whatever list. We've already seen players listed on their career totals as a Coyote, and the one which leads the franchise in goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes isn't #1. The last half dozen should be great. |

Flyers traded Pronger to Yotes for cap reasons. Pronger wasn’t playing anymore. You think this fool puts him on the list ? I do lol |

Let me start by saying I hate the Ruff hiring. But Tanner, how many cutting edge, innovative coaches are ready for an NHL job? Over a third of current NHL coaches are on their first head coaching position at the level, is it really fair to say they never get chances? The Devils last coach was supposed to bring an innovative system with him but he never consistently got the team playing above their talent level. Yeah, Ruff is a horrible retread hire, but coaches aren't good just because they are young and "innovative". - rmdevil313
I don't mind Ruff. He's not the best coach out there, but he's not bad either, and if you're looking for "innovative", Ruff is certainly willing to try unconventional game plans..... Didn't he once try the Mighty Ducks flying V for a while in Buffalo??? |

Dude, Lindy Ruff sucks and was a terrible choice. Just because I didn't realize he coached some high scoring teams doesn't change my mind about anything. He's an old school coach whose going to dump and chase and play grinders over skilled players, and he's going to be awful and NJ will fire him three years from now wondering what they were ever thinking. - James_Tanner

It's not as cut and dry as Tanner makes it out to be.
What Tanner leaves out is that certain players at the mid range level may have many intangibles that aren't reflected on the stst sheet. Leadership, defensive play, personality, experience , making line mates play better are qualities that shouldn't be easily dismissed. This is why teams pay them in mid millions price range. Yes, sometimes certain players. Don't plan out, but that can be said for players up and down the lineup
Maybe a reason why Leafs are exciting but not winners. Obviously, time will tell.
NHL GMs don't treat the cap lightly, and having a core of players beyond high prices talent is needed to win a cup. It's just not as simple as interchanging mid level players with high end talent. - rrentz
Finding guys with leadership abilities on the cheap is actually easy. His argument is simply don't overpay those guys. Cap hit does not equal quality at all on bottom 6 talent
I also think the hype over Leafs not winning a round is rather ridiculous. They still have plenty of time and are a amajor threat this summer. |

I gotcha, but you over simplify how the right guys for the right mix or guys can easily be had. Subtracting certain guys from team can had adverse effects...same goes when adding guys. Just saying much more thought goes into getting those low salary guys to compliment the stars.
Toronto playoff woes are overhyped, but after another year or so of early exits, it will be warranted. Lack of commitment to team
defensive play is easily seen, especially in playoff style hockey. Maybe the Messiah, Keefe will change that |

yowzers. An old school "dump and chase" coach is pretty much the exact opposite of what Lindy Ruff is. |

Babcock was a big problem. I'm looking forward to seeing their best players being able to play more and the style that suits them. |

How many times has Tanner criticized people for not being open minded and changing their mind when presented with new information? There's that lack of self awareness rearing it's ugly head again.

The game has definitely changed, there are less enforcers, less grinders in general, less teams are playing a dump-and-chase model, there's less emphasis on grinding, more emphasis on puck moving D. The NHL has essentially had a revolution because of all the things you've spend the last five year pretending weren't real. - James_Tanner
I'd say the league as a whole has become more well-rounded.
That's what having more skill up and down the line up does for you. Gone are the days of having plugs on your roster who can only fight. Now the 4th line guys are all highly skilled as well (just not quite as much as the stars).
So, any given team will try to gain the zone with possession. When the defense prepares for this and stands up to prevent it, they switch tactics to dump and chase forcing the opposition to turn, chase and get bodied in the corner. This wears them down and when the offense returns to skating the puck up the ice, they have renewed success.
Simple tactics are unsuccessful thanks to the experience of these dinosaur coaches. |
