The NHL is a culture where anyone doing this would really have to show their teammates much more than just concern about contracting the virus.

What kind of nonsense is that? If someone is concerned about contracting a virus during a worldwide pandemic with fears of their long-term health, it's not going to be an issue to teams and teammates. Idiot fans will be idiots, but noone cares about them.

Would be crazy if a goalie for a contender opts out though.

I can agree with a lot of this. In my opinion if someone doesn't want to work or thinks that there is to much risk then that is their choice. I also think no one really knows the actual risk and anyone who claims to is feeding into all the misinformation that is out there.

Lastly, I just have to say as far as the protest stuff goes. I just don't like the idea that people get to put other people in danger because their issue is deemed more important somehow. Who quantifies that ? I believe 9 unarmed black people were shot by police in 2019 in US. Some of which posed other deadly risks at time than possessing a gun. How many have died from Covid? I understand these protests are about more than just an unarmed black person being shot but the double standards in general going on are scary.

Yay, reply is fixed!

Unlike a lot of knee jerk people, I'm not gonna call you racist. The issue isn't just about black people shot. It goes WAY deeper than that. Even back in the Fresh Prince of Belair days, they covered the issue of black people being pulled over for no real reason. It's about the systemic racism that exists in the police system. I know that the term, "systemic racism" is being thrown around a lot, but it's simply ignorant to think it doesn't exist. I'm not saying all cops are bad, but unions/back-room pressure tend to cover up a lot of issues with the cops that ARE bad. Kind of like the racism and hazing in hockey locker rooms that are only really coming light now. It's not new. It's not uncommon. But pressure has to be applied for action to happen. And it NEEDS to happen. Cops are human, yes. But they're supposed to be the best example of us in society. ALL of us.

I noticed the following statement on the NHL site:

"As of Monday, July 6, the NHL has had 396 Players report to Club training/practice facilities for optional participation in Phase 2 activities. There have been in excess of 2,900 COVID-19 tests administered (including more than 1,400 this past week) to this group of Players."

396 players, 1400 tests, 1 week, that's about once every 2 days for every player on ave.

*cough*

I hate to toot my bugle, but...

In late March, many weeks long before the NHL announced a return to play, I said on Bill M's blog that the return to play was practically feasible and made economic sense. I said it would be based on the following:

One or two cities hosting
Empty stadiums
social distanced bubble, with complete isolation of players and support staff
Very frequent (I actually said daily, and rapid) testing with quarantine of only the players who test + while others are unaffected
The fact that TV revenues would yield in millions of $ of profit even if every series ended with minimum # of games and the most exorbitant costs were assumed for bubble.

There were some extraneous details (sanitized buses to drive players to rink and back, food dropped off in common areas etc.) but by and large I was right.

Zillions of people disagreed.

To which I say:

Why? Call me crazy but everyone I know is working. why shouldn't athletes? Are you one of those people who think it is ok for people to gather in large groups and protest if you agree with their their cause while at the same time don't think an athlete or entertainer should be able to work because they are nonessential? Honestly just wondering?

Are they going to wear masks when they play ? All the NHL is doing is spreading the virus more just for money

To be fair to gerbe he says the police are all bad but calls them saying there is a drug deal and all if he finds glass on the beach from beer bottles or whatnot

Says they won't come if you just say there is glass on the beach so you have to make up a story and use multiple numbers so its harder to trace him or some crazy story he said

But he does go surfing during the virus

Anyone can call me whatever they want to be honest. The ones
who throw the word around all day every day will be the first to cry when it no longer has meaning.
I know what I believe and I know I think everyone is equal while at the same time understand certain people have struggled more than others.

I'm sick of the violence in general that has plagued black communities. Sick of seeing kids get killed daily. I dont care if it is white people's fault, black people's fault or cops fault. It needs to be stopped.

I think a few guys will opt out.

But if I was a young, healthy athlete with no sort of underlying health concerns - I would take a calculated risk and go.

My reasoning being, I'll have access to good medical treatment and over 90% of Covid patients recover. There is upwards of $250,000 (which is a significant chunk of money for a lot of players) and a Stanley Cup on the line.

Get to your hub city healthy and it will be fine. Its roughly 14 days for each team before their first warm up game.

Hotel X (where the eastern teams are staying) are taking reservations open to the public during the bubble dates. Does that tell you anything?

Ridiculous! Too many people are so lost in fear that they've become irrational. They act like coronavirus is an automatic death sentence when NOTHING could be further from the truth. The fact is that the death rate for those under 45 is nearly zero, and the healthier a person is the lower it goes. As well, the death rate (which is the real data point that should be paid attention to) has been declining for at least 12 weeks. Last Friday, the CDC said they are close to reclassifying coronavirus from pandemic to epidemic. The seasonal flu is an epidemic. Let them play. Stop acting like a bunch of chicken sheet cowards.

First off you need to look at and examine the crime stats here in the United States before you go off and make any assumptions.

Anyone on the Canadians should be able to opt out.... Why bother getting lit up for a couple of games?

Enjoy the summer and maybe next year you can steal a game from the Wings.
