Which was named after....

I know exactly how the team was named: after the Black Hawk Division of the 86th Infantry, by Col. McLaughlin.

I know exactly how the Indianhead logo began: with major input from (if not complete creation by) Irene Castle, the famous dancer married to Col. McLaughlin.

And I know where the Colonel got his money: "McLaughlin's Manor House Coffee".

Be careful when throwing around personal insults.

Sorry - it wasn't directed all at you, but if you know all that why did you not say that in your original post? You see, some people can take things you say the wrong way.

The team is not named after a person, it is named after an Army unit that the owner at the time was in. This is how crap starts, uneducated people start thinking they know all.
- powerenforcer

The team is named after an Illinois based army division...
which is named after a regional war against native Americans...
which was named after the principal “enemy” of that particular war...
which was waged because the person deemed the enemy in that war refused to go away quietly when he was forced off of his land.

Plus, also, and in addition...the logos in use by the team obviously pay homage to Black Hawk the person, and not the Army Division.

The potential name change is inevitably a political issue. The question remains - how many need to be offended to require a name change?

At the end of the day, it is a business decision. If 95% are against the name change, but not enough to quit watching or spending, the 5% will end up winning. If a lot of season ticket holders tell the Hawks they are gone if they change the name, the 5% will lose. I suspect the team has heard more of the latter so far, given their recent statement.

The 5% of people who maybe could care less about hockey, will try to win. Proud of Wirtz insofar as making a preliminary statement, as opposed to none. It's a logo and crest worth fighting for. A 12 pack underneath your belt, and I'm betting you're blaming the atrocious heat wave. At least you're keeping up with this old German. How you been holding up, friend?

Wow no kidding .NHL was also not on as solid a footing as it is now .And seemed to come back fine after shoving a salary cap down the players throat .The NHL dose not need to proceed with this sham hockey tournament .They are doing so in the name of greed and market share .Also they are putting undue pressure on testing supply and PPE . I love hockey and do not like the road it is going down and will say so when I feel like it .

I have two interesting points to bring to the discussion table. I am unsure I know the outcome or best answer for both topiics

First I have not checked Vegas line in playoffs but it has to be very unsettling right up to the start of the games. You just do not know whom may be in or out of the lineup due to Covid19. I also ask how hard the players put forth the effort at least in the first round of they are not all in too physical shape.

A team like Carolina appears to have a good mix of players and enough experience. In past years a common refrain was that an NHL team can win The Cup with merely average or not a top.metminder. This idea was born out of the Red Wings with Osgood in net..Carolina had injured dmen back but some question if the goaltending is good enough

The second discussion point is regarding the boatload of young offensively talented dmen prospects in the Blackhawks pipeline.

Most likely outside of Boqvist each of them needs one or more years experience playing in the AHL. I think it will be interesting whom is able to play either side on a pair because if not proficient in off side, then do not keep trying theory off side.

It's really more than that, however. It is striking the better balance so that each dman can compliment the style iother half if the pairing.

Ideally we have three pairs each very good luck movers. We may wind up shirt on the physical checking dmen though. That can be a thorn in the side but trumped by an entire group if dmen solid (just not weak) in their own end. Vlasic, Rogula, Moberg could provide size but also muscle

All the other sports that have resumed and/or are about to...are they also all greedy bumholes creating a sham version of their product while putting undue pressure on the testing system? Or is this only the NHL you feel this way about?

Thomas Mann's famous quote "everything is politics" seems ever more obvious these days - even when people are following the rules regarding appropriate versus inappropriate commentary on this hockey blog. Sometimes I'm forced to accept reality for what it is - like it or not. And the world goes on.

Funny this business did not go under after shutting down in 2005.If I had a business raking in the money the NHL dose I would not be rushing back in well the pandemic is still raging on . And in the name of the public good My business would not to be putting undue pressure on testing and PPE need elsewhere to save life's .
This tournament in the middle of the summer in empty arenas playing 3 games a day with no travel or home ice advantage or disadvantage
starting 5 months after play ended is not a NHL playoff and is not worthy of a Stanley Cup presentation . They should dig up the old Canada Cup and present that be much more appropriate .Bettman and his greedy owners have been selling out any integrity the NHL ever had for cheap gimmicks and corporate shmucks .

In shutdown the NHL didn't have to pay the players, it's a big difference.

Thanks, Wiz.

Yes, my comparison of Kalynuk and Merkley was that the Sharks prospect has a documented attitude problem. By all accounts, seems like Kalynuk is well liked and commits to whatever coaches ask of him.

- AEL_Fox

Wonder why he didn't sign with the Flyers? Is the Flyers prospect pool on D that much deeper than ours? After 20/21 they only have Provorov and the Ghost signed (and seems like the Ghost is trading fodder)

Do you think the Cup winners during WW11 were awarded by sham tournaments, and the seasons were only because of greed?

https://www.nhl.com/news/...-world-war-ii/c-291024550

Or for that matter the 2013 Hawks cup after the lock-out because they only played 60% of the originally scheduled regular season games?

No .They also played a Post season right after the season ,not 5 months later In the middle of the summer in Peewee tournament format . They were also not effecting people lives .
The HAWKS cup could be viewed as little tarnished for not playing a full year .They also played a tougher then usual compressed schedule and I can't stress this enough they played a full playoff right after the season .
This season should have been shut down as every other hockey league in the world was .If they did they could be looking at trying to start the season on time maybe .

As it is the leagues (not just the NHL), have furloughed a lot of employees. Would you like every employee/vendor associated with a major sport (including minors junior, colleges) to be laid off? Playing the season does not solely put money just in the owners pockets. Yes they are looking for TV money, but if no games, what are the sports networks going to show? Strongest Man Competitions. I am sure the networks are really going to be able to sell that advertising time for big bucks, let alone all that it takes to put on a broadcast (electricians, camera operators, editors, etc.). That is affecting peoples lives also.

If you don't want to attend, is someone forcing you? The owners are not forcing any player to play, and they are not forcing you to buy tickets or even to watch.

You might have to get used to the "peewee" format playoff tournament. MLB has been using it since 1994. The Nationals won the world series last year after winning the play in game.

Hanging in there, Archangel. I was kidding about the 12 pack - that's just what I report to the doctor, it is in reality a few more.....

I'm on the side of the crest. I hope Wirtz continues to hold firm; and I hope season ticket holders make their opinions heard, whichever side they're on.

Testing supply and PPE are good.

Players will financially benefit by playing, and lose money by not playing. Owners will financially benefit by playing, and lose money by not playing. See how that works? They're in the same boat. I'm not telling you to stop irrationally hating the owners, but if you wanna call the owners greedy for playing the games, then the players are greedy, too. By the way, any player can choose not to play this year.

I thought you did just fine!

Not sure how one can say they like the sport on the one hand, and root against its financial interests on the other. Seems inconsistent to me.

All stakeholders would benefit from resuming play - owners, players, networks, sports media, fans - assuming reasonable health risks (there will certainly be some).

There is nothing wrong with businesses trying to get back to...uhh...business if they can do it without unreadonable health risks - and understanding that if things go bad, they may have to poop it down again. Restaurants/bars, retail, manufacturing, service, sports leagues - figure it out, figure out how to open safely and be flexible enough to change if....

IMO, the mistakes that Pritzker and Lightfoot made were in seemingly looking for reasons to keep things shut down, instead of looking for safe, viable ways to open things up.

The Flyers blueline is pretty young after Niskanen and Braun. Provorov, Hagg, Morin, and Sanheim are all under 25. Gostisbehere is 26.

After these current rostered players, the Flyers top D prospect are York, Myers, and Zamula.

Kalynuk was in the mix easily as a top-10 prospect in their system so not sure why exactly he decided to sign elsewhere.

I fully agree with the last paragraph. Pritzker seems to have adjusted to that. Not sure on Ms. Lightfoot.

On the restaurants....how many businesses whose finances you've audited over the years would be able to sustain a 30% revenue loss for six months or a year or more? If a restaurant has to open at 50% capacity that is what will happen; unless they charge the customer more. That's inflation and costs everyone.

Same deal with sports leagues - how long can they survive without in-person revenues? Or at 25% of their revenues? Or 50%?
