I fully agree with the last paragraph. Pritzker seems to have adjusted to that. Not sure on Ms. Lightfoot.

On the restaurants....how many businesses whose finances you've audited over the years would be able to sustain a 30% revenue loss for six months or a year or more? If a restaurant has to open at 50% capacity that is what will happen; unless they charge the customer more. That's inflation and costs everyone.

Same deal with sports leagues - how long can they survive without in-person revenues? Or at 25% of their revenues? Or 50%?

- mohel

Most businesses are one bad situation away from shutting down in the best of times - I don’t know what percentage of the total workforce they represent, but it’s certainly a large one. Many only have a shot now because of PPP and other programs - despite the obvious unwarranted distributions, most of the PPP money got to deserving businesses and, ultimately, employees (even tho there’s about $100 billion unspent, I think).

This is just a terrible, terrible situation - which won’t start moving behind us until we get a cure / vaccine that’s effective, safe, widely distributed, and taken. Until then, we have to have our most talented people doing the best they can, bot in the health are and in the economy.

The Flyers blueline is pretty young after Niskanen and Braun. Provorov, Hagg, Morin, and Sanheim are all under 25. Gostisbehere is 26.

After these current rostered players, the Flyers top D prospect are York, Myers, and Zamula.

Kalynuk was in the mix easily as a top-10 prospect in their system so not sure why exactly he decided to sign elsewhere.

- AEL_Fox

Kalynuk is from Manitoba. Maybe Toews is his favorite player and he wants to skate with him. Maybe he's an admirer of Keith or Seabrook. Maybe he doesn't want to sign with an East coast team just like Hayes, an Easterner, didn't want to sign with the Hawks. Maybe none of the above. .

All stakeholders would benefit from resuming play - owners, players, networks, sports media, fans - assuming reasonable health risks (there will certainly be some).

There is nothing wrong with businesses trying to get back to...uhh...business if they can do it without unreadonable health risks - and understanding that if things go bad, they may have to poop it down again. Restaurants/bars, retail, manufacturing, service, sports leagues - figure it out, figure out how to open safely and be flexible enough to change if....

IMO, the mistakes that Pritzker and Lightfoot made were in seemingly looking for reasons to keep things shut down, instead of looking for safe, viable ways to open things up.

I feel the biggest issue are people themselves, and they don't trust them to do the right thing. I'm sure they are looking at what's going on in the southern states and are very very concerned.

Any time pro sports teams think they have a solid plan, they find more players testing positive.

The way i understand it as well if schools don't open in the fall they will get no federal funding. And because they have to reduce class sizes they will have to hire more teachers, schools will have to provide lunch, this is a big mess

They'll have to have an aid in all the class rooms just to remind all these kids to keep their masks on.

Wow no kidding .NHL was also not on as solid a footing as it is now .And seemed to come back fine after shoving a salary cap down the players throat .The NHL dose not need to proceed with this sham hockey tournament .They are doing so in the name of greed and market share .Also they are putting undue pressure on testing supply and PPE . I love hockey and do not like the road it is going down and will say so when I feel like it .

Would Stan have to dress him?
- powerenforcer

I could be wrong, but since Pronger is a grown man I would think he knows how to dress himself. Then again, maybe Pronger’s wife dresses him each morning.

Kids typically want a combination of the fastest route to the NHL and a team that supports their continued development. My guess is that Kalynuk felt the Blackhawks offered the best combination. The decision is different for every player and I don’t have an issue with there kids taking control of their careers (even if it means not signing with the Hawks).

Chris Pronger is leaving the Florida Panthers. He’d be a good fit with the Blackhawks front office.
- DarthKane

Pronger is leaving hockey to help his family with a luxury vacation business. Not sure how that will thrive in today's current world but it's never a bad thing to chase dreams and support family.

Well, there's lots of "science" out there on that. I've read that the immunity to this doesn't last very long, although I've heard very few stories of people in the US getting it a 2nd or 3rd time. If the immunity doesn't last long, then the vaccine won't either. If it does last long, the vaccine and whatever herd immunity has developed will help tremendously. The leagues - and the rest of us - should be prepared to live with a less than perfect solution.

Yes-all of us, and all of society.

We all (well, not all) get flu shots every year - partially because of changing strains, partially because it is only effective for so long (and only at 70% effectiveness at best, I think).

We may be getting coronavirus shots every year (or 6 months) too.

I'll pile on with you and say the players are stupid as hell agreeing to the escrow. They aren't owners but taking all the downside away from the owners. Stagnant salary cap and paying the owners is bullpoop. You're worth what you can get salary caps only protect owners from each other.

The escrow is a red herring. The league and the players each get 50% of the hockey related revenue. The escrow is just a mechanism to make sure the numbers come out right at the end.

Bob McKenzie has a big thread of new Return to Play facts. This one struck me as odd:

There is not even a tentative return for the AHL correct? If they stay shut down, are there ANY lower level leagues that are planning to play? Any other options for developing players?

The ECAC, which is the NCAA conference that the Ivy League schools + a few others play in, has shut down for the fall term.

As far as Blackhawks prospects, this only impacts Parker Foo at Union College.

Jake Wise and Alex Vlasic (Boston U), Josiah Slavin and Dominic Basse (Colorado College), Slava Demin (Denver), and Joshua Ess (Wisconsin) are not impacted. Yet.

It's a matter of time that other NCAA conferences are likely to follow suit.

No news on the AHL, ECHL, or other lower leagues as far as I know but I haven't done an extensive search yet beyond the AHL.

Not sure where prospects will play if they're no longer in juniors or NCAA. Maybe some could go play overseas but there could be travel restrictions.

At least European prospects can stay in their home countries or wherever they may be playing overseas (Galvas is Czech but now plays in Finland).

BTW
RE;; Rogula

I am lacking information ( and I suggest many hockeybuzz readers too) insofar as the details on his scouting report.

Specificly, scoring 27 goals stands out. Is that due to a fabulous pp shot? Is he a puck carrier? How about his defense? Obviously he will spend one year or more in the AHL.

Adding a good size dman with even some physical edge and a big scorer (?)- tell more please

Thanks for bringing this to closure. LOL

Your post is right on the mark. There could be one or multiple reason why he signed. Could be a rationale decision, could be a gut feeling. Wondering why is almost a useless exercise, as you pointed out.
