He was worth 2.5 WAR this season, making him better than 94% of other defensemen.
- James_Tanner

There's the new infatuation and the new gold standard of stats. What was his corsi?

Do you recall your statement that no player with a corsi of under 50% should be in the NHL?

One thing I will never get is why if you don't understand something you have to call other people names. It just makes you sound like a loser.

Now, to answer your question, when someone mentions points as a stat, does anyone ever say "what about assists, you goddamn idiot?"

NO. cause that would be dumb.

Corsi is a great stat, WAR is a one-number stat that includes Corsi, goals, assists, shooting percentage, offense, defense etc.

Is it 100% ?? No, but what other stat is? WAR is the best stat that we have.

Also, as an added bonus, underneath each player's WAR rating, it tells you the exact percentage of players they finished better than.

So when I said that Chychrun was better than 94% of all other NHL Dman this past year, I was being literal.

- James_Tanner

So WAR is the exact ranking of every player in the league is what you are saying ?

Yes, I agree with that. No player under 50% CF is good, as long as we have some reasonable context.

So I have to admit, I am curious.

Your hero just tweeted out that the one black Nascar driver who found a noose in his locker is lying, and that Nascar should not have banned the confederate flag.

You wanted proof your boy is a racist. I hereby present it to you.

It is a one-number rating system that attempts to combine both offense and defense. And while I'm not sure it's 100% accurate, it is definitely more accurate than anyone's opinion from just watching a few games.

I truly am not worried about finding a suitor for one of those players.

Their replacements will be the young guys that are on the cusp, like Hayton, Soderstrom and Capobianco. We actually don’t have a ton of need to add any more bodies../the roster is still full after letting the UFAs is walk.

While there is some outside chance Hall signs somewhere other than those 3 places, it is extremely unlikely. I still think people are foolish to think he wouldn’t sign in AZ. We officially have the wealthiest owner in the entire league, a coach that players love, a ton of young talent showing promise, and players have always preferred to live/play in Az due to weather/lifestyle. We have a history of signing top free agents that people have forgotten about. From Jovanovski to Ribeiro (sucked but he was the top center on the market) to close misses on Van Riemsdyk, players want to be here.

Calgary makes the list just cause it’s his hometown but frankly I think Calgary would be stupid to sign him as it’s the one position they don’t need.

Colorado might win him over with Mackinnon.

Few other teams have the need, the cap, or the desirable situation that Colorado and AZ have, so it’s near a slam dunk guarantee, with hometown being the only wild card.

- Dahlmanyotes

You should be worried about finding a suitor for those players. In the current flat cap environment, teams will be very reluctant to take on those contracts. If they do, there is a good chance that it will be costly to do so. Not to mention the teams willing will be far more limited with the cap staying flat.

If all of that is true about Arizona, why hasn't he re-upped with Arizona already? common sense tells you why.

Here is the bottom line. A bunch of players that Chayka acquired and was praised for doing so, are now on the fire sale list apparently. What was the payoff? What did they win with those players? Now it's become apparent with what myself and others have said and have been saying. Chayka took the wrong approach and is not going to have to pay a price for it unless he can pull a rabbit out of his hat. Not impossible but not likely to emerge unscathed.

Chychrun's corsi is under 50% this year.

Clicking on link, it says it doesn't exist.

Not sure what you're talking about with a noose in a locker. The story that I'm familiar with was a "noose" in a car garage. The FBI investigated that and found that the "noose" was there for a couple of years and was put there to use to pull the garage door down.

You're under the mistaken belief that anything derogatory said about a person of color is automatically racist. The evidence supporting that Trump is not racist is overwhelming.

Starting with the First Step act which addressed the ridiculous prison sentencing disparity for minorities. Which resulted in people like Alice Johnson being freed after serving 20 years on an absurd life sentence for a first time, non violent drug offense.

Trump recently nominated and saw confirmed Air Force Gen. Charles Brown to become the first African American armed services chief in the history of the US.

The nation's first black President, Barack Obama, did neither of these things as well as many other accomplishments by Trump for minorities.

A racist does not do these things. I've got plenty more.

Is it?
Not that I think Tanner has provided any sort of defense, but it's getting kind of old.
I used to be the one arguing with Tanner everyday. At some point, you have to realize he is free to be whatever kind of tool he chooses to be. You aren't going to change the mind of a man who clearly thinks his every opinion is right and refuses to see merit in any other.

I find it a shame that Tanner had to again, bring politics into what was a hockey conversation. If he wanted to talk to me about a political issue, he could've sent me a PM instead of ruing another thread.

it's not his fault that you only read twitter headlines and don't bother to follow a story to it's conclusion.

but here is the guy you support. What is that you say, if you support a racist you are a racist???

Biden on how to fix past mistakes from slavery:

"We bring social workers into homes of parents to help them deal with how to raise their children. It’s not that they don’t want to help, they don’t want — they don’t know quite what to do. Play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the phone — make sure that kids hear words. A kid coming from a very poor school — a very poor background — will hear 4 million words fewer spoken by the time they get there."

Hockey blog not getting clicks, so Tanner infuses politics into comments section to keep thread going. His kids must be screaming "Dad!!!!, I want ice cream!!!!!!

It's pretty funny that Tanner depends on us Republicans to pay for his kids ice cream . Kind of a microcosm of how our country works.

Anyone catch Biden's Merry Christmas celebration message on the 4tth of July?

So better than 94% of the league would roughly put him ~18th

I was thinking you were going for the top 20. Not too far off with that.

Going over the defensemen in the league this year, I don’t think he’s quite there regardless of what one WAR stat says. You must know the ambiguity of WAR in hockey. It looks at several things, but even sabermetrics junkies aren’t sold on it in the NHL like they are in MLB. It’s been reworked, retooled, and tinkered with several times since it’s advent only a couple of seasons ago, and the reason is because even they aren’t sure if they have the right recipe yet. Or if frankly, they ever will. It’s not an easy thing to figure out in this game! Definitely not the statistician’s dream that baseball is.

So getting back to the question. Could he get there? Maybe. I’d venture to say he sits around that spot at some point. I really don’t think he’s there quite yet, though, and that’s just using people under 30.

I wouldn’t count defensemen over 30 since you said he’s getting there, and not is there, right? If you think he’s already achieved 18th in the league, then I guess it’s only right to include the more experienced players, but if you’re point was that he will be soon, then I have to choose a more age appropriate group since the majority of defensemen in their 30s are in decline
