listen. yzerman pointed out. the bottom 8 teams have a 24.5 percent chance of picking number#1 . DET had a 18.5 chance. if we get someone like Drysdale and he becomes the anchor with Seider back there? is anyone going to complain? no!

I'm really not that upset about it.

There is going to be a really good player available at 4. I am not crazy about Drysdale but between him, Byfield, Stutzle, Rossi, Raymond, and maybe Perfetti you have like 6 guys who all have a case for going as high as 2nd or 3rd overall.

That said I can feel that way and also feel that a system that lets a playoff team pick first and the worst team of the last two decades pick fourth is a profoundly stupid system.

if they pick the right guy they get a stud. where they really build this team is in the 2nd round with their 3 picks there. helps the rebuild out a ton if you get a good player there instead of relying on your lotter pick like EDM does

So what do you guys think the odds are that the loser of the Edmonton - Chicago play-in gets first overall?

One hundred percent?

It'll be the Habs.

With the late start this season and with most scouts saying Rossi could be NHL ready, I am hoping for Stevie to pick Rossi! It would be great to watch some new blood right away, along with Sieder, Zadina, Lindstrom, Svetch, and Veleno later in the season. Pick up goalie like Greiss for 2 yrs at $3M AAV or less. And a D-man for the left side, stay at home defender at $3M for 2 years. I think they will have achance to move up 5 positions.

I've decided that I don't care who wins the second lottery as long as the team that does is required to officially change their name to "Team E" for at least the next ten years.

I see EK took down his "King Alexis" post. Must be quite a red glow around the house he lives at!
I am still in suspense as to where Johnny Hockey is gonna play with next season! (gotta be Jersey)

Wouln't "Team E" be racist???? We will have to poll the other letters.....I imagine "Z" would apply for the position. Z is usually left out, I have personal experiance with Z. (My last name begins with that lonely letter)

Seattle will now officially become the Seattle CHOP. definately has a ring to it.....

My first choice is Rossi but i wouldn't be surprised to see Sanderson picked either. He could be the left handed top pair dman the Wings need.

Other picks i wouldn't mind too much would be Drysdale or Raymond.

Not a fan of Perfetti and i would be pissed if Yzerman picks Askarov at 4th overall or even in the top 10.

First overall picks, 2004-2018

Ovechkin
Crosby
Johnson
(Patrick) Kane
Stamkos
Tavares
Hall
Nugent-Hopkins
Yakupov
MacKinnon
Ekblad
McDavid
Matthews
Hischier
Dahlin

Out of those 15 guys, five have already won the Hart Trophy, a sixth (MacKinnon) has an outside chance of winning it this year, and a few others realistically still could in the future.

At least three of them are already all-time, generational-level greats (Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid), at least a fourth who is also already a slam-dunk Hall of Famer (Kane), three more who are probably on a Hall of Fame track (Stamkos, MacKinnon, Matthews) and a few more legit superstars.

By my count out of 15 guys there's one total bust (Yakupov), one ordinary NHLer (Johnson), one respectable but not outstanding first liner (Nugent-Hopkins), and 12 guys who are at great first liner / top pair defender and above, or at the very least are on pace to get there (Hischier might be debatable).

Fourth overall picks, 2004-2018

Pouliot
Backstrom
Hickey
Pietrangelo
(Evander) Kane
Johansen
Larsson
(Griffin) Reinhart
Jones
Bennett
Marner
Puljujarvi
Makar
(Brady) Tkachuk

There are definitely some very good players in there. Makar is off to a great start. Tkachuk too. Besides them you've got at least five guys (Backstrom, Pietrangelo, Johansen, Jones, Marner) who were at least solid first liner / first pairing guys at their peak.

That said, none of them have won any major individual awards or are likely to do so, besides possibly Makar. None of them are on a Hall of Fame track -- at least not yet. And there are a whole lot of very ordinary players in that group.

Look, I do think this draft class could be a really special one. It really seems like there's a lot more superstar potential than usual in the top 10. You've got maybe 6 or 7 guys who would be legit top-3 material in a normal year. If you were gonna pick a year where dropping from 1st to 4th might not be so terrible after all, 2020 might be a good candidate.

But let's not underrate the historical advantage of picking 1st vs picking 4th, because it's massive. The Wings could and very likely will get a great player at 4th, so I'm more or less at peace with it. But in almost any other year I think it really would be devastating.

I'm not sold at all on Drysdale but I've been very wrong about prospects before.

Hoping for Rossi with the No. 4.

- Sven22

Agreed. Give me whichever of Stutzle, Byfield, and Rossi are there at 4.

It’s definitely tough to see the lottery screw u guys over again.

But like a previous comment said, this is the draft year, where not getting the 1st overall isn’t too bad.

System is broken af. Worst team in years, not due to "tanking" but by poopty asset management by the old GM who is going into the HOF for some (frank)ing reason as a "builder". If that's not irony folks I don't know what is. :
- MartyBurk

He did what he was supposed to do. It's almost impossible to turn rebuild and become a contender without a bunch of really high picks.

The Wings are closer to winning a Cup than a team like the Flames who've never been run well enough to really tank a couple years to get the cheap superstars you need these days.

Stutzle and byfeild will also be gone.....
Drysdale, Perfetti, Rossi, Raymond, Holtz, Askerov, which one will Stevie pick????
I think Rossi.
or do you trade down for Askerov?
I would prefer a scorer and pick D with 2 of your next 3 and maybe a goalie in there or soon after.

- HenryHockey

Take Perfetti. Don’t despair he could be awesome. Askarov trade down idk about that.

I'm the long run this won't matter. Covid will strike teams playing, stuff will get cancelled and the season scrapped. Good news is the Wings can 'win' fourth twice, since that was the most likely outcome, when they have to redo after the play on rounds don't get completed.

Absolutely stupid draft lottery.

How in the holy hell does a team that qualifies for the play-in round deserve the 1st overall pick?

STUPID.

This is NFL or NBA level stupid.

Maybe Stevie trades 4 for a spot that gets Sanderson and another pick early 2nd round.......but I would prefer Rossi.

Last night they showed Stevie Y at his desk focused on the outcome when all along he already knew. All the GM’s / team reps watched the lottery balls spin and get pulled earlier, that’s when the true disappointment hit.

Now the Wing fans are to believe that picking #4 will result in picking another Stevie Y?

How does a playoff team get a chance at the #1 pick when other organizations need some excitement added to the lineup. The NHL was looking for some big news some hype well here it is, this is bigger then any Seattle expansion news. When Las Vegas was coming into the league it was all the news. Seattle news hasn’t been very exciting.

I knew as soon as Daly said he had 8 cards that the Wings would be picking 4th. I expected it for months. All is not lost. They'll still get a very good player at #4.
