Yohe wrote about expansion projections for the Pens today, but I thought this part would interest the board:
Analysis โ The Penguins love Joseph and have him projected as their No. 3 defensemen on the left side within a year, where heโll play behind Dumoulin and Pettersson. One would imagine Jack Johnson will be a candidate for a trade or a buyout by the summer of 2021.
I've said before, I think JJ/Joseph plays out similar to Gudbranson/Marino: when Joseph is ready, they'll make space for him at JJ's expense. - Tojo.
That's outstanding news. Am I mistaken or can Riikola play on the right side? I know he's left-handed but I think he's played on the right before. The way he was rounding into form this season, I think he's an above average third pair d-man. Unfortunately, Sully doesn't seem to agree. |

He played some on the right his 1st year, but didn't look as good IMO. |

Hmmm...I wonder if that was a first year thing or a right side thing or a little of both? If he's not a good choice for the right side, I think Riikola would be a good bridge until POJ is ready. I checked and the only thing we gain by buying out JJ next year vs this year is one less cap hit year at $900K during the 25-26 season. But I guess we are too thin to be jettisoning defensemen, although maybe a lower cap will force JR's hand. A fella can dream, can't he? |

I'm a bit confused by how the draft positions are to be decided if the season commences. Can someone illuminate me on what happens if the Pens lose the play-in vs. making it to the actual playoffs?
I'm aware they keep their 1st rounder for this year if they lose the play-in and next year's goes to MIN, but how does the position get decided? |

Riikola and Oleksiak took turns playing right side 2nd pair with Maatta because we were so thin there without Schultz. Both looked bad and honestly I always felt Maatta should have gotten more blame too.
Big difference this year with Riikola properly slotted at 3rd LHD when he played. A little more experience helped too. I agree with using him as a bridge to POJ. I don't think Pens do, but maybe the cap situation forces them to because they might need to make a cost cutting move or 2 they wouldn't otherwise. |

I'm not completely sure myself, but what I think will happen is if any spot from 8-15 wins the lottery, they'll hold a second lottery after the play-in round with each team getting an equal shot at that spot.
So say a spot from 8-15 wins the lottery for 2nd overall. Each team that lost the play-in will get a 12.5% chance at that pick.
After that, I think it's points percentage but am unsure. So the Pens, if they lost to Montreal, would likely pick 15th unless they won a lottery spot. |

So a chaos scenario would be 2 picks in the top 3 going to play in teams and everyone going into that round knowing if they lose they have a 25% chance of a top 3 pick. |

Haha thanks. Still kind of confusing, but I think I get the gist. |

Yeah, they over-complicated it. |
