He also left Adams with an optimal cap situation. He can move just about any contract he wants except for Okposo and maybe Skinner. If Friedman is correct about Botterill not wanting to sign longer term contracts, it was the right approach. Maybe it got a little extreme if he didn't want to give Eichel a max deal, but shorter term deals are equivalent to gold in a hard cap league.

I’ve been saying this for years.

Although not wanting to go long term on Eichel was defitnely a head scratcher. He’s the exception to the rule

I know you've had some extremist views around here recently, but I gon' jump in on this one. Who around here said that Jason deserved to keep his job?

Out of all of Jason's faults, no one here has ranked his drafting as the #1 problem.

- TheSabresTaco

Is trading Reimhart extremist? Is seeing that Skinner is not playing well extremist and that paying 9 million for 8 years extremist? Those views have stirred the pot.

It just seemed no one was acknowledging the draft before and now that he gone people are warm and fuzzy about it. Not talking about you.

Yes, where the Hell are the forward prospects and many of us have been wondering. It's almost like GMJB was so so appalled at the D when he got here that he was going to overstaff and never see a D that bad again.

If it was sticking to your board and the D was the best player next guy up maybe he should have done some analytics on some of his scouts and said no, I'm picking this forward a few up on our board who we like.

- GilPerreault11

I have concerns that analytics haven't been used or considered as much as they should have. My own opinion. However, I think one of the real problems, which was quoted from Adams, is that all departments were on different pages. Scouts, player development, analytics... all wondering why the other guy picked a player. So you're left with a a player(s) that everyone's like.... why is this guy here. What's his purpose.

It sounds like their new approach is all the department heads will be together on every single player.

Not exactly what I was referencing. No need to dig into it.

I honestly disagree with the draft comment. I think a lot of people either liked or were at the very least neutral about his overall drafting. Sure CM has been slow to develop, but if anyone takes a look at 2017, you can't be disappointed thus far. A lot of NHL potential there, in all positions at all depths. You might get 3 players out of both 2018 and 2019. That's exceptional.

I personally, as you noted, have never had a problem with his drafting ability. It's obviously early, but early returns are overall positive. I really don't recall anyone here saying how terrible he was at drafting. I really, honestly don't.

Botterill didn’t want to go max term on Skinner. He was overruled by the Pegulas

Makes me even more worried that they’ll be heavily involved in day to day roster decisions.

EEEk.

Can you (frank)ing imagine. The Pegula's make that thought more tangible than I prefer.
In the end, I don't think that happens. If at the end of the day, Adams runs the draft with the current staff today, I will raise the white flag higher than anyone else on this board.

Let's see what Adams does with Risto.
- TheSabresTaco

Krueger likes him, has said publically he is considered part of the core.
Adam's said he'll seek Ralph's input, together they will arrive at the decision.
Sounds to me the dots are connecting to him being here.

If Jason Nightengale is smarter than Don Jr, he'll heavily favor trading him. And it sounds like Adams will value his opinion.

Don't tie yourself to that. It seems like teams may want to retain their scounts past their June 30th contract term date (for many), so Adam's may have to wait a bit longer to staff. Maybe he can pry some loose?

With so many teams in the playoffs, he may have to wait a bit longer.
Best hope is the Sabres land in the 2 spot next Friday Lottery #1.

I disagree on the cap situation. The Sabres are not in all that great shape at all. The cap is stagnant they will have about 33 mil
They have an abysmal roster. Have 10 guys total signed.
They need Reinhart. So that’s min 7.
Montour is another 5.
Ullmark is 3.
Kahun is 3
VO is 4

I’ve used 75% of cap space available in 5 guys

Not directed at you, but people can't say that we were a 2c away from contending for the playoffs, but also say the roster is terrible.

Again, not directed at you but I have seen multiple people say similar

Sure but any hockey trades we’d make would consider money going out also.

Money may be tight but Adams has flexibility if he chooses to use it. We have an abundance of RHD that can be moved to find help up front.

It’s ultimately up to him to make the right trades.

They finished 25th.

A 2C is not the difference between 25 and 12.

The roster is bad, it needs a lot of work, sadly.

2C and either Hutton figuring his poop out or finding a goalie that can split 50/50 with Ullmark that doesn’t cost us a playoff spot.

We missed out on 8-10 points alone due to Hutton/Johansen not being able to stop a beachball

Once they knew they were out they kicked the bucket. They gave away a lot of points the last few weeks before the stoppage.

Their strong defensive play tailed off.
