mccabe was blah
scandella was blah
dahlin was out for a while

if our coach is really good, a two time ahl all star is a good body to put in the lineup from time to time

- homiedclown

There's a case for both points of view.

Neither of them are wrong. Unfortunately, Botts didn't get it right, either.

the spin from sabres camp is unreal

you trade for montour, joker and miller to go with risto and bogo on the RD

you say joker earned a spot, yet when other young players earn a spot they don't get it

I mean just say montour and bogo were hurt, so joker got a spot and then we were in cap hell from all the crappy vets we brought in

call it what it is

- homiedclown

Joker earned a spot , other young players (pilut) didn't play well enough.

Joker - nylander
Pilut - just $ and convincing

Big difference in play and acquisition cost

Did he really hold much trade value? I don't think he'd be in the KHL if he did.

This is just Antipin all over again. He had an opportunity, couldn't lock down a spot, and went home. I'm already over him.

It must not have been that important to them as they traded Scandella for Frolik.
- kingcong39

Then Scandella walks at the end of the year for nothing and the fan base revolts again?

From a GM who collects players like trading cards, and refuses to lose any of them for nothing, he essentially lost Scandella and Pilut for, yes, nothing.

What is this GM's game plan? Does anybody know? Does he even know?

Nice try.

Then hold him until closer to the trade deadline, and then make the trade, if him mentoring Jokiharju was really that important.

Shouldn't have traded for Frolik and just kept the 4th

Agreed, or held on to Scandella longer, as well as he was playing, and hoped to get at least a 4th, if not more for him much closer to the trade deadline.

The giveaway versus takeaway metrics per Evolving Hockey and Natural Stat Trick:

19-20 = 4 giveaways vs. 2 takeaways (-2)
18-19 = 14 giveaways vs. 7 takeaways (-7)

Sabres Context 19-20 season (league rank):

Jake McCabe -2 (24th)
Rasmus Ristolainen -7 (50th)
Bogosian -7 (56th)
Montour - 15 (103rd)
Colin Miller -20 (143rd)
Jokiharju -23 (162nd)
Dahlin -27 (188th)
Marco Scandella -31 (200th)

League Wide Context:

Only 17 players league wide were even or plus when it came to giveaway vs. takeaways in the 19-20 season.

Top 5:

Jaccob Slavin +32
Mark Pysyk +11
Victor Hedman +7
Zach Whitecloud (VGK) +7 (only 16 games played, and my cutoff was a 15 game minimum)
Erik Johnson (COL) +5
Connor Clifton (BOS) +5

I am not sure how valuable a stat giveaways and takeaways are unless the numbers for a given player are glaring.

- kingcong39

Ya, I think you hit on it for me anyway, but from different perspective.
I think T/G are counted when a player has possession/control....striping the puck away.
I believe another metric, let's call it Contested Challenges Won/Lost might be a better metric...think of it as chasing down a dump in..does the player win or lose that battle for the puck.
It is here where my major beef is with Pilut, and I don't believe those are counted in the T/G metric until a player has possession and is stripped of it.
Could. E wrong, but those numbers in the database seem really, really low to be able to have that aspect considered/recorded.

You are right here.
Botts did decent in the UFA's he did trade away in Scandella and Sheary, plus Erod as an RFA I think.

It was trading a 4gh for Frolik that was absolutely mind numbing

Fast, North South.

He is taking the South part a big too seriously for me though.

There's a few stats that I simply don't trust. It doesn't feel like they are credited equally across the league, night to night. The idea that Eichel and Dahlin averaged well under 1 give away per game simply doesn't track in my book.

It's all in the context of what the observer considers a giveaway to be, similar to score keeping in tennis in terms of unforced vs. forced errors.

I think he did scandella a favor trading him to his hometown? A 4th isnt nothing.

Looks terrible that he was flipped for more a week later.

Would have looked great, a 2nd an a 4th for scandella

But go on?

Pilut wasnt good enough to beat out bogo or scandella

Injured or not

His "value" as an overseas free agent indicates just that

That's a problem. Stats shouldn't be that arbitrary. There has to be enough guidance to have some consistency. Just gets compounded by it's infrequency.

This is misleading. The Sabres still own his rights. The Sabres will not be playing hockey for a minimum of another six months. Even if they wanted to trade him, they can only currently trade him to one of six teams. That severely limits the market. He could very well play in the KHL until January, and then come back to Buffalo, or a team that trades for him later.
