That was never in question but what about the prospect of Zach Smith playing? That has to warm your cockles no?

He is a key cog in ensuring a high draft choice. Plus, it still isn't real yet.

It's only fair since I pretty much hate everyone except for about 100 people. Maybe.

When Bob Pulford felt something was wrong with Mike Smith's GM work, Pully had no problem doggedly pursuing a coarse of action which led to Smith being canned (fired).

Now in another situation where not just one person is livid about a policeman's work, I have not séen the Minneapolis Mayor or Mayor Lightfoot call for some sort of review of all policemen conduct pursuant to complaints and discipline by an officer's own police deoartment.

Is that how you root out or minimize police from reacting poorly in their line of duty -
uncalled for police brutality - when a Mayor cites their own or a panel to review all officer's records?

Of course there is this issue of the police unions and constitutional amendments which serve to protect the rights of the police.

Of course too there is an issue how to resolve or minimize officer's with a checkered record from misbehaving. It appears there could be problems stepping on someone's toes if you want to codify it like that. Or just say it: police conduct needs greater accountability

It is a far cry from "Pulford -ism" to the treatment of officer's with bad grades. But society shows it's mettle when the Catholic Church covers up behavior as well as the police departments also do not make public its employees bad marks.

So the drains upon society continue. I just listed two examples. Tell me, what could be done, what likely is done about the issue of police brutality. I encompassed it in terms of job performance and review.

We (society) will continue to struggle and suffer when more police are shown using unnecessary force. Can we tolerate this any longer?

I don't know jhawk, honestly the only thing i can do is control what i do. I vote, i treat others as id like to be treated, call out bullpoop when i hear it especially on this blog. I can't imagine being a cop or a African American. And i support both. I realized there is so much gray in the world, no easy answers. So i do my part the best i can because it's all i can do and leave the rest to my higher power.

I applaud your comments and Tyler as well, when you reference your part in all the ills or recent problems society is dealing with. We just try to do our best and live right. We respect each other even if we might have differences.

It is what relationships should be about; it is better always in the world stage too when super powers as large economic forces can get along.

Thank goodness the protests around the country and world were peaceful yesterday. This shows the irate people that there is much support for them and they together can protest peacefully. I just wish now that after they have looted, pillaged and damaged the ecomic fabric of society, they will realize continuing to do so is no gain for them. And as for white supremacy, I am maybe somewhat naive but I believe they are only a small - though not insignificant - part of the destruction via their financial and organizational support.

Things have come to a boil though legally a crezendo may be resounding for a long time as hopefully some things can be done to put African Americans in a better position to work for their betterment. And obviously police conduct and job performance needs to be made available for someone or some panel to review so that the cops who have job performance violations or issues can be reassigned to something beside streets - or at least be on probation if they still work streets. Some too should be fired or asked to retire.

Now as for comparison sake in the world and us bloggers as a micrcosm, the hockey season resuming and the initial appearance of callousness of police reform strikes a chord which just is not in harmony. But if we have progress then we are moving forward and making progress.

The nature of not only the issues affecting and leading to protests/looting, the Covid19 struggles as society re-opens as well as the much less important sports leagues recovery.....each is an inherant part of our lives. They are not a exactly categorically a sham effort in the reform or changes shaping up, but progress is being made even though incremental slow steps.

On a hockey note...the Hawks have fared pretty well on NHL.com’s, all time greatest to ever wear jersey number ____.

May be missing someone but I know Kane, Hossa, Crow and now Savard have been voted All Tine Greatest to wear the the numbers 88, 81, 50 and 18 respectively.

Edit -

Couple of mistakes, missed Stan the Man...oops! Tbf, I didn’t see when they did 30-21.

Also called “Who wore it best”. Missed Gramps at 28 too.

I would have to agree and Tyler made mention of a healthy Smith could have been an important cog for a playoff run given his veteran leadership, experience, and gritty style.

Besides the usual suspects like Kane, Toews, Saad, Keith, and Crawford who I expect to shine and lead the team and besides the high-end youngsters like DeBrincat, Strome, Dach, Kubalik, Nylander, and Boqvist who get to experience the playoffs for the first time, players like Carpenter, Highmore, Kampf, Caggiula, and Murphy could play pivotal roles.

The playoffs need your team's bottom 6 to be better than the other team's bottom 6 (or 4/5/6/7 in the case of the blueline) in order to win. That mark of having the better role players is measured by the capacity to wear down the opposition, agitate the heck out of them, get in their heads, and chip in timely (often back-breaking) goals.

This is where a healthy Shaw could really pay dividends as we all have seen before.

Nhl.com also had the redraft of 2003 the other day and the Hawks crushed that draft. 3 potential Hall of Famers. Well, Byfuglien won't be , because he quit... but he could have been if he played many more years

Colliton was also drafted in the 2nd round that year by the Islanders. The Blackhawks had the pick after taking Barinka but maybe they were eyeing Colliton all along and missed by one spot.

THERE’S your additional HOFer - not Buffelinne (Col. McCormack spelling convention).

A nice career for the big Minnesotan, but not Hall-worthy, I don’t think.

If Byfuglien kept playing for another 4 years and putting up points and being effective I would think he would at least make the ballot. He's a legendary player regardless. Seabrook, Crawford (HOF), Byfuglien, and Barinka, great job scouts!

I also think Byfuglien at least makes the ballot. Whether or not he gets voted in may depend on how his career is defined amongst the peers he played with/against and the era in which he played.

An argument can be made that there is no other player like him that could dominate the way he does as far as physical presence. His stats aren't elite (still pretty good) but his physical dominance was definitely one of a kind.

Chara is the only other player I can think of who dominates physically. Byfuglien takes it to another level, IMO.

Problem is Smith doesn't make anything better. He is terrible at hockey. Save the grit talk, too. By the time he hits someone he is way behind the play. Think playoff Bickell/Shaw/Bolland for grit with a purpose. Smith doesn't even begin to come close to that.
The puck isn't his friend. He is just in the way of someone who actually may be able to help in the future.

I'm no fan of Bettman, but I also don't miss the thuggery of what was hockey back in the 80s. Fighting back the was a sideshow, not a part of the game. I'll never forget the first Hawks game I watched after the conclusion of the 2014 Olympics, and the mighty Brandon Bollig drops the gloves for no reason on his first shift. After watching some of the most exciting hockey ever, we were oh so blessed with Bollig punching someone in the face. I love physical hockey, but fighting just to fight is what kept hockey from being considered a legitimate professional sport. Back in 90s I regularly argued the opposite position, but I've never been afraid to admit when I was wrong. And I was certainly wrong then.
