#1 pick.
Leafs don't have what it takes yet to make it deep into the playoffs.
But Lafreniere gives them an elite talent on his ELC which allows them to trade Nylander, fix the defense and get them the horses they need to finish the job in the near future. - JohnFergusonJr
this logic is stupid
one of the options is them making it deep into the playoffs.
its not complicated, but you took it and made it stupid |

1st overall > Losing in the Conference Finals (which they most likely would)
Very simple. |

But I did. First thing I said was, #1 pick.
After that, in a separate sentence, just stated a well known fact; they don't have what it takes to make it deep into the playoffs.
Since your hypothetical didn't guarantee a win, odds are they'd lose and at that point, Lafreniere is more valuable to this team than an overachievement run. |

I'd love the #1 pick. Lafrenière is gonna be incredible.
I'd love for the Leafs to draft the next best French player. - GreatGigInTheSky
Is Laf going to be better than Matthews?
I dont know what the general feeling is where he ranks as a #1 pick.
Id also love for this Leafs team to get a good run in them, making it to the conf finals would def go a long way in building these players up. |

They don't need a Lafreniere though, they need a #1 RHD |

I agree, they do but Lafreniere lets them trade Nylander for a RHD and have a cheap replacement on ELC. |

Pretty much. Why would we assume that if they can get by one of those four they can't get by whatever other team comes through. This will be such a crap shoot. Will teams in ten round robin really be ready to play? If you've got a shot, you always take it. |

Well all 4 on the scene were fired and the mayor is looking to press charges...so probably in the next day or so. I'm more interested in what the guy who couldn't cuff him and the guy keeping the public back will get. Might get Manslaughter. |

Nylander + Johnsson or Kerfoot + a prospect could get what they need and clear the cap space they need to fit that player under the cap.
If they needed to, they could trade Lafreniere for what they need too but would need to clear cap space to fit the player they acquire.
In every scenario, Leafs are better off with 1st overall. |

Kerfoot and Johnsson coming off not good seasons, prospect pool one of the worst in the league |

So nylander + 3rd liner + a prospect "could" get a rhd?
This better be the best rhd in the league and is under 25. |

Unlike the NHL and the NBA, there is no way MLB and maybe even the NFL can pay their players with a full season without fans. Payrolls are too big and the TV money doesn't cover enough of it. Unless the players play for a fraction of their contracts, it's not happening.
This is why I've always been a proponent of % based contracts for the NHL. If the cap ever goes down, most of the cap limit spending teams are screwed. The players contracts should be % based and go up and down based on the cap. Everybody wins because if the cap rises, the players get more money every year. But if it goes down, it doesn't lock a bunch of teams into cap hell either. - JohnFergusonJr
This is exactly how the current system works. |

If the Leafs lose to the Columbus Blue Jackets, they have a 1.1% chance of getting the first pick.

Remains to be seen, but if he can score at half the rate that he did in the OHL, I'll take it!

I'm on the fence though, I think they got screwed with this 24 team format. |
