Brodin and Dahlin both can play the right side.

If Brodin ends up on the 2nd pair then you have your top 4 set for the next 5+ years.

Dahlin-Joker
Brodin-Montour

- Pegullaville

Everyone rips on McCabe, but with all that work 39 did it seems he's one of the better defensive defenseman in the league, McCabe-Borgen or Miller have your 3rd pair.

what has montour done to prove he deserves to be a fixture in our future?

serious question

mccabe reminds me of a pylon

it's on the ice, in front of the goalie on his side

and that's about it

he doesn't attack the player in our end

he doesn't make a nice breakout pass

he just stays there in the way like the last line of defense in a foosball table

Not enough - part his fault, part our idiot GMs fault. Playing on the wrong side obviously hurt his play, but, I would think a great dman could adjust better

Bust of a trade IMO. Haven’t been impressed by him at all. Looks avg and we traded a good D prospect (at the time) and a 1st. Would be in much better shape not making that move.

He is elite at exiting the zone with possession and entering the zone with possession. He excels in transition although the offensive numbers leave a lot to be desired.

Chad makes a good point in the article below that if they adjust his usage it will benefit him. Playing on the right side exclusively with someone other than Risto would also help. I think paired with Brodin in a more defensive role with more defensive zone starts it would allude to his strengths more of getting the puck up the ice

Well sometimes the eyes don't tell the whole story. 39's numbers showed him to be the 7th or 8th best defensive dman in the league.

McCabe-Miller would be an ideal third pairing.

Or if you are in the move both Risto and Montour camp for help up front then Miller could slot in a top 4 role and Borgen can play the third pair.

Ideally I’d bridge Montour and move Risto and have Borgen as the 7th. Can never have enough depth. If Borgen proves he is ready then you can entertain moving an extended Montour afterwords.

Yep, and gonna have to see what Bryson can bring to the table also, he might need another year in the AHL but he looks close.

Good post

Wonder if montour caught a little buffalitius?
His value might still hold around the league?
A prospect and a late first?

I agree. 64 years old, work part time doing something you love. Still call the games. Something he is really good at. I imagine he is financially secure.

In the mid 80s I had a sick pull shot from the left DMan. And when I set that same guy up for the push I faked him, left the ball there and Rang the bell shooting with the right D.

Now I suck at most cool stuff.

I have zero interest in paying Montour north of $4M on his next deal. No thanks.

His offensive numbers leave a lot to be desired because he is totally inept once he enters the offensive zone, despite having all the physical gifts to be much better then he actually is.

Sounds a lot like another RHD the Sabres have on the roster...

Agreed. Toronto and Arizona should be very interested if that's the case. A second rounder should be reasonable for a top-10 d-man
