how many teams made the playoffs
- gerbe75pts

That's not the point. The entire season it was "this season is tainted; it won't be the same for whoever wins".

And like Crag said, teams used to make the playoffs with losing records. In 1992 the Sabres made the playoffs with a record of 31-37-12, the North Stars went 32-42-6, the Whalers went 26-41-13. Three teams with losing records. Was the Pens Cup tainted? 16 of 22 teams made it that year, or 72.7% of the league. This year with 24 teams it's 77.4%.

Draisaitl i left off bc they moved him back to Center & RNH to the wing

Johnny Hockey had an off year, so I’d put him in that next grouping for that
Wheeler isn’t quite elite imo

Stamkos is on the borderline for me
Marner too. Aho maybe?

What percentage of the teams made the playoffs in the '80s?

Wasn't it like 16/20 teams at one point?

- jcragcrumple

16/21

Imo, they should keep the 24team format moving forward

1- more revenue for more teams
*and we all know $$$ rules the day, esp in NHL where getting to the playoffs is the difference for some teams between making $$$ & losing $$$
*and helps recoup the losses from coronavirus this year
*and helps them get a bigger US tv contract

2- fan interest for more teams extended
*less empty seats towards the end of the season

3- you’d only have 8 teams involved in the lottery
*no more teams barely missing getting lucky & picking in the top3- f that- it was so dumb

EDIT
And GMs would like it bc it’ll save more of their jobs being able to say they made the playoffs
And players will like it bc more $$$ for more of them, plus they obviously want to be in the playoffs

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact he plays in Florida and that he is a playmaker more than a goal scorer.

Barkov was having a pedestrian season by his standards and Huberdeau kept chugging along.

He’d be in a tie in my top 5 with Pasternak along with Panarin, Kane, Ovi, Kucherov.

- Pegullaville

I get what you’re saying
And of course he’s very good
Just needs a little bit more for me to put him in that elite status

I don’t think Lafreniere is a McDavid level talent but he’s pretty darn good.

I don’t think Byfield is on the level of Eichel coming out but I believe he has that type of potential as a franchise 1C.

Lucas Raymond could be the poor mans Marner.

If I were Ottawa I would keep the two picks and take my chances rather then packaging them up for the 1st overall.

Completely fair. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. Everyone has different opinions. Fact of the matter is that Huberdeau has the talent to be in that discussion.

I’m not familiar?
NEVER in Depew though, so it’s not surprising i wouldn’t know about some of the good local spots there

If it was a different draft year, I might think about it, just to hard to pass up 2 good players that could change your fortune

i have to disagree he started in the league at 22 and was on the 3rd line till 25
he would be at 900 pts if not for that ..

He’s obviously really good
And has (finally) taken his game up a notch to where he was expected to be

He’s likely gonna lose some support though with FLA having to shave off Cap $$$
We’ll see if that makes any sort of difference next year

Barkov is a beast though
So if those guys stay linemates, I’d imagine a lot of success for both for years to come

Career stats based off longevity don’t tell a story of how good the guy really was/is though

Example:
Is Frank Gore really a top3 RB of all time?
Or
Is Ron Francis really almost twice as good as Mario Lemieux?

If you’re putting Wheeler into elite status,
you’re just expanding the list to fit him in
He’s not replacing anyone i mentioned
And he’s clearly behind them all as well
