Despite all that publicity...you spell his name wrong. Of all the superstars in this league, for some reason, maybe 50% of the hockey world makes the same mistake you did. Not sure why. Far more complicated names are rarely incorrect. But Fedorov is often wrong.

I'll give you four: Jagr in Pitt is a no brainer..he was the perfect dynamic duo fit for Mario and he won the Art Ross award and is 2nd in points behind Gretzky...not to mention being part of the Triple Gold Club...his is well deserved.

Fedorov in Detroit should have his number retired with 3 Stanley Cups, Hart Trophy and his International success. Plus he played in over 1200 games..

I'd also retire Igor Larionov's Number 11...Igor was one of the smartest players ever to play the game. He had substantial International success as part of the KLM line before getting the opportunity to play in the NHL and he only won 3 Stanley Cups for the Wings (one of the worst trades ever made by the Sharks) His 921 games played is deceptive because Russian players were denied the opportunities to play in the NHL during their younger years.

Along those lines, I'd also like to see the Sharks retire Sergei Makarov's #24. He is one of 6 named to the IIHF's Centennial All Star Team, won multiple Olympic Gold medals, was a Soviet League All Star 10 times, and , being 2 years older than Larionov, had less of a chance to play NHL hockey. However, he did score 384 points in 424 games for a .906 point per game rate and was over a point a game if you include his entire career. He was the Sharks first 30 goal scorer, scored their first penalty shot, and along with Larionov as part of the Ov-Fense 5 (Garpenlov, Ozolinsh and Jeff Norton) propelled the Sharks to the playoffs in their 3rd season, beating Detroit and almost taking out Toronto in the same year. He is a double Hall of Famer and deserves the honor.

I’m surprised his number is not. He was a big part of all Detroit’s cups. His stats are great with the Wings, especially how insanely clutch he was in OT. And just the ]publicity he brought to that organization. Living in Southern California and going to Kings games a lot that was definitely the Jersey all the Wings fans were wearing in the mid to late 90s and early 00s, 2 of my best hockey buddies are huge Detroit fans because of Fedorov. Definitely a number that should be up in Detroit.

What about league wide choices?
- brandxbeer138

Maybe only 66.

Orr and Howe could be based on how great they were as players, but 4 and 9 are just too common. With 66, similar to 99, there is basically only Lemieux.

First Russian to defect from Soviet Union

First non North American to lead the league in goals

First Russian named to an all star team

And first Russian captain

If you go here, you've got to get Peter Stastny's number re-retired, as he was the first Soviet to defect, has over 400 goals, was a multi-time All Star, and won the Calder (although he was 25).

It was retired by the Nordiques, but when they moved to Colorado, they un-retired all numbers that were retired by the Nords.

Jagr’s 68 for the Pens is a no brained.
Recchi’s in Philadelphia
Fedorov in Detroit

Lindbergh’s career was to short. That being said, the Flyers have made this more awkward than it needs to be by never assigning the number after Pelle died.

Hextal? I think a real argument can be made that he deserves to have his number retired.

Igor Larionov was #8 in Detroit and New Jersey. I think he wore #7 in San Jose and #18 in Vancouver. #11 was his Soviet Red Army number.

#12 - Peter Bondra, although with 5, 7, 11, and 32 already hanging in the rafters at Verizon Center, and space being made for 8, and maybe 19, perhaps the Caps should be a little judicious in retiring numbers.

The Ilitch Family still holds a grudge with Fedorov when he held out and signed an offer sheet with Carolina back during the 97-98 season. They were even angrier when after that 6 year contract expired, Mike Ilitch offered Fedorov 5 years/50 million and he said he'd think about it. Each offer after that became less and Bryan Murray ended up signing him in Anaheim.

I don't care about that. Fedorov was dominant at both ends of the ice and the Red Wings don't win any of those Cups in 97, 98 or 2002 without him. He's in the hall of fame and it's absolutely ridiculous his jersey isn't hanging up on the LCA rafters. Pretending his Red Wings career never happened is stupid.

Red Kelly had to wait until he was 91 years old to see his Red Wings jersey retired. That's even more ridiculous. All because he wouldn't allow Fat Jack Adams to bully him. Someday Zetterberg and Datsyuk's jerseys will be retired and Fedorov was better than both of them. Oh wait. Datsyuk left a year before his last Red Wings contract expired. Better screw him too.

I remember one all star skills comp, he competed in fastest skater, hardest shot, and shooting accuracy. I remember thinking, "Is there anything this guy isn't great at?"

And let's NOT forget the year he played defense because of all the injuries the Wings had. Fedorov is one of the best and most complete players to ever lace 'em up.

I remember that. Bowman rolled 4 lines so Fedorov averaged less than 3 or 4 minutes of ice time per game than other top line centers and would always complain to the press he wasn't getting enough minutes. So when the injuries hit, Bowman put Fedorov back on defense and told him "here's your 22 minutes." 😂 He was excellent playing defense. A natural. I was amazed. I don't think he was appreciated enough by the Red Wings or by alot of the fanbase.

Washington for sure. But Gartner did score 40 plus goals for the Rangers 3 years in a row. He could sure skate. And score.

I think that Edmonton should retire number 4 Kevin Lowe. He was the first ever draft pick of the nhl oilers, scored their first goal 5 cups. Guy was underappreciated in edmonton with the wealth of talent out there at the time, he also went on to build some pretty decent oilers teams as gm in the early 2000s

Like I said, Soviet (not Russian). Technically a satellite of the USSR, but still a part of the Iron Curtain.

Some people say Fedorov rejected the Wings offer, but he merely asked for time. Why? He had just fired his agent who had introduced him to a guy that ultimately scammed Fedorov out of millions. He had also just been dumped by Kournikova who was fooling around with Bure and Enrique. His life was a mess. So he asked for more time. And Illitch became all butt-hurt about it. I'm sure if Yzerman asked for time he'd get it...
