Thank you sir.

Still working through the advanced statistics for defensemen.

Trying to get all the variety of statistics quantified so I know what to use and what not to use.

I tackled the defensemen first due to the smaller number of them compared to forwards.

I'm working on an overall evaluation of defensemen considering multiple factors, including what I just posted above.

Good stuff.
I find it interesting from a number of perspective, one of which is id'g the GM who acquired these guys especially if in a reasonably recent trade that was executed.

Based on the following advanced metrics of Goals For per 60, Expected Goals For per 60, Corsi For per 60 (total shots towards the opponents net), Expected Goals Against per 60, Corsi Against per 60, the top 5 defensemen in the NHL offensively for the 19-20 season were:

1. Adam Fox
Tie 2. Dougie Hamilton and Morgan Reilly
Tie 4. Ryan Ellis and Alex Pietrangelo

The top 5 defensemen in the NHL defensively for the 19-20 season were:

1. Jonas Brodin (literally number 1 rank in both defensive categories)
2. Nick Holden (Vegas, and on a great contract, as they actually got him to take LESS on his new 2 year deal)
Tie 3. MacKenzie Weegar, Charlie McAvoy, Juuso Riikola (only played in 36 games), and Jake McCabe (yes, Jake McCabe)

The top 5 defensemen in the NHL overall for the 19-20 season were:

1. Adam Fox
2. Charlie McAvoy
3. Jared Spurgeon (for those wondering, Jonas Brodin is bereft of offense)
4. Dougie Hamilton
5. Matt Roy (LA Kings)

Really good stuff 39, so I guess we need to find McCabe a better partner.

Just using the Above Replacement advanced metrics alone (Goals, Wins, Standard Points), I found the following interesting:

- League average for the three categories combined was 3.4
- Former Sabre Marco Scandella had the best number in each category and the best combined number overall (14.2)
- McCabe and Ristolainen were at 9 and 8.6 respectively
- Other defensemen around that range?
Mattias Ekholm (NSH, 8.5)
Mikhail Sergachev (TB, 8.4)
Brenden Dillon (SJ/WSH, 7.3)
Dylan DeMelo (OTT/WPG, 7)
Seth Jones (CBJ, 6.9)
Rasmus Dahlin (BUF, 6.2)(added him so everyone could see where he ranked)
- The worst two Sabre defensemen?
Henri Jokiharju and Brandon Montour at -2.3 and -1.5 respectively
- Two of the bottom 4 numbers I could find, league wide:
P.K. Subban (NJ, -15.4)
Jacob Trouba (NYR, -12.9)

Adding Josh Manson since he's been a topic of conversation: 0.9

I think it's partially the defensive style they played, but he still deserves the credit for playing well defensively.

I'd say find him a quality RHD partner, don't go crazy with his minutes, and you'd have a hell of a 3rd pair.

I'd really like to see the Sabres play an up tempo style this year so they really know what they have in McCabe.

Overall though, I'd either keep him through the entirety of next year if they're in the playoffs, or trade him at the deadline for a good return.

That said, if Nashville they want McCabe plus something else for Bonino, I'd do that for sure.

6.5 mil for 1 year

11.5 mil for 2 years

Carl Soderberg? He of 35 points? How about no? He's 35 years old(at the start of next season) and was 6th in points for the Coyotes. Maybe $3.5M for a year, and even that is high.

Edit: I see the topic was beaten to death.

Adding to my first reply, with how Jokaharju looked this past season, which was as a new age defensive defenseman per the advanced metrics, I think those 2 make a strong 3rd pair that can play 2nd pair minutes from time to time, or maybe even consistently if Jokiharju takes the next step.

Could be a interesting pair, Joker is the wild card, if he keeps taking those steps, could end up being a 1st pair with Dahlin.

Maybe the Ducks add a pick or a prospect, the trade is not out of whack, Manson is better then Risto and would allow Dahlin to just play.
- Buff36

Is he?? He’s been pretty average to me from what I have seen of him. I would think Risto has more value.

Per the advanced metrics I am through so far, Ristolainen was better in Goals For, and that was it.

He was demonstrably worse in every other category that shows how a defenseman drives play positively and how well a defenseman plays defensively, and that's with the goaltending rate for Ristolainen being at 92.21% compared to 91.17% for Manson when he was on the ice.

Manson also costs over a million less per year than Ristolainen against the cap.

Well one is -145 for there career and has never finished a season in the + category. The other is a + 46 for his career with this year being his worst at -10. And has finished 5 out of 7 in the + category.

Alex Ovechkin is -12 on a team that's +25 this year. +/- is a dogsh¡t stat.

Yeah, but his defensive metrics blow Risto away, and it's not even close. He would be a good partner for Dahlin, and just let him play his game.

I just picked Ovie because I was looking through the other day and was kinda shocked at how low it was. It was an illustration of just how bad +/- is.

Wayne Gretzky was a -48 his last 10 years.

He was a +568 his 1st 10 years.

I forgot my point because I agree +\- is a blah stat.

It's far from great, but to see Draisaitl and McDavid with those massive amount of points and still be around a -7 shows how many points they must be getting on the power play and it makes you wonder how much defense they're actually even attempting to play on a nightly basis.

My point: it creates a question that leads you down the road to find what's really going on.

DWI and unlawful possession of a firearm. Both are misdemeanors according to ESPN. Interested to see what his BAC was as some narc driver blew him in for apparently erratic driving as his pickup was hauling a ATV on a trailer through a construction zone. Not good he had a beer between his legs.
