It’s far from an underdeveloped country. It’s incredibly sophisticated in many ways and in many places. But it sure shows how determined investments and efforts by a few big money right wing types (primarily the Koch brothers) can take control of the country right in front of everybody’s eyes. There’s a great book by Jane Mayer, Dark Money that describes this.

Ironically, it might be by electing somebody certifiably insane like Trump, that the right starts to lose its grip.

It goes back a lot further than the Kochs et al.
Think back to all the old westerns that a lot of Americans see as ingrained in their culture. Who were the bad guys? Gun runners, oil barons, crooked politicians etc.
Fast forward to today and... same thing with better spin doctors.
I don't get why so many average Joes down there, who were brought up on their heroes beating this type in gun fights, are now waving the flag for the same types today.

The toughest part about Belinda Carlisle will be choosing a picture.

I like who I have her going up against, although it is a far different kind of performer.

Ginger Reyes should be considered.

So should Jorja Chalmers with Bryan Ferry's band (hot and can sure blow that horn)

Because the Koch’s, the Murdoch’s, the rest of the people from Mayers’ book that I can’t remember have done a great job in controlling the narrative. People are strongly convinced to vote against their own best interests. Want free health care? Enjoy (frank)ing Venezuela you socialist.

I checked out that link after seeing you mention me, trying to figure out the connection.

They have the right sentiment, but that's a different Thecakeisalie. (they seem like an intelligent and well informed dessert)

I’m not convinced he wins. He’s down nationally and he’s down in all the key battleground states. The longer this goes on the less time he has to run his “vilify Joe” campaign and the less time Joe has to bumble around.

I really think the country is just worn out. Dems picked Joe for some kind of meatloaf factor; he’s not going to upset anybody. Bernie bowing out early and getting onside helps a lot especially if it pushes Joe a bit more progressive and get some of the kids to the polls.

Getting a big urban black turnout which they didn’t get in 2016 is huge and winning some of the suburbs will kill Trump.

There was so little enthusiasm for Hilary last time and nobody really thought Trump could win. It’s a different story

- Canada Cup

I'm quite confident that Dems will have Joe pick Hillary as his running mate.
and then either just before or after elections put Biden aside (because 'health issues'). It is so crazy that such a big country can't seem to find a way to produce 3-5 solid presidential candidates every 4 years..

you called the USA in a post before "incredibly sophisticated in many ways and in many places". That was the best laugh I have had in the last days, apart from while watching Norm MacDonald clips on youtube..

You’re naive if you think the whole country is defined by the rubes who voted for Trump

i'm not speaking about the people - i'm speaking abou the political system and the 'rules' / setup (by lack of a better word) of their society.

Oh yeah, there is incredible corruption built into their politics and economy. But there are still local and state governments that manage to act relatively progressively.

The sad thing is Biden will be much better than the malignant child in office currently, but he'll maintain the same underlying power structures.

It's just like Obama. Wall Street new he'd play ball. And he presided over the biggest transfer of wealth upward to the 1% in history, expanded the military-industrial complex, conducted extra-judicial assassinations all over the world and the left just applauded with tears of worship streaming down their cheeks. Yes we can! Change!

Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize simply for being an American President who didn't attack a defenseless country for a change. He didn't didn't close Gitmo or actually do anything to promote peace, but they said at least he's not a Neocon, let's suck his balls.

(frank) the left and right. Two wings on the same bird of prey.

A rare tv show where the character actually changes. Several of the characters change actually. And the way the viewer feels about the characters drastically changes. It's outrageously manipulative of the audience's emotions in that way. It really reminds me of Hitchcock.

I'm planning my Algonquin trip for September and I'm going down the rabbit hole of MEC window shopping, dehydrator recipes, fishing tactics. I haven't gone for ages so I'm tripping hard on it. Oh right and also thinking about tripping while I'm there, so window shopping for that too lol.

I just read through a page of comments on Facebook about a McDonald’s worker being tested positive for Covid-19 for the past 10 mins.

I think I lost a few IQ points. Everyone on this that posts regularly...thank you for being competent

Haha nice. Camping planning is the best.

I have a nice little two-person MEC tent, it’s perfect. I also have a pump filter, it’s handy. Get the route down that you want to take, then plan around it. Download Avenza Maps, and get “Jeff’s Algonquin Park” map. It’s shows what type of fish are in each lake, campsites, portages, and things like where cold springs are, or points of interest. I’ll definitely be doing a trip this summer, too. If you have 3+ days, and your somewhat in shape, consider Greenleaf Lake. As for fishing, if you’re going for lakers, you’ll want spoons. Black daredevils work well in the park. For bass/pike use crankbaits. Just mimick whatever is in the lake (minnows/leeches etc)

Thanks for the tips man! Yeah I have a tent, a dry pack, a stove. I am looking at water options. Years ago I did the Pet run from Cedar Lake to the end, which was (frank)ing insane, and we almost died. I was guzzling straight lake water the entire time which I don't think I should do this time lol.

Think I'll be going mainly for bass and pike. I won't bother trying to get deep after lakers. If I get a trout it'll be a bonus.

Holy poop.. well, that a long trip! So you’ve been to Traverse then. Definitely DO NOT drink straight lake water LMAO!! I don’t know how you didn’t die tbh lolololol.. I’ve done Cedar, south to Catfish, and Northwest to Laurel/Cauchon.. Are you bringing a Coleman stove?? That’s crazy. River paddling is fun because you’re mostly just drifting trying not to hit rocks. There’s no pike through there, all smallies, Lakers, catfish, and a few walleye along the pet. Musky start in Traverse.

Naw, a little backpacker stove, the tiny ones. Yeah, the Pet trip I did was 100 km in five days, and we did a lot of the rapids, and we were NOT experienced enough to do them. They were several full-on capsizings in rapids. It was crazy but amazing. I forget which one but there's a portage on there that you kind of have to do because the rapid is just too much, and that portage was the hardest physical thing I've ever done.

This time around I'm not gonna do anything like that, especially solo. Just gonna set up on a lake for four nights, do day trips, fish, chill out. I do love the river travel though, maybe the time after this. I'm gonna get back into it.
