Rather than overpay for a name like Dillon, I believe you can get an almost equally as effective defensive defenseman for much less in salary as the league overall seems to underrate that value.

That would be my approach.

fine by me...

and the player is?

It's clear you think those two things are much more important than all the other aspects I outlined.

I disagree.

Being bad at any of those other aspects also ends up with the puck in your net. See Ristolainen, as an example.

- kingcong39

Agreed, but few have the complete package.
Hence why I suggested getting a D-minded partner to let Dahlin do what he is elite at, yet have someone to bail him out in the Dzone.

or is that forbidden too?

Marc-Edouard Vlasic says high

Vlasic in his prime was a brick wall though.

That’s why I want Brodin.

based on your logic

if eichel is such a difference maker, why has he yet to play a playoff game?

I mean you are on your knees for dillion like he is the second coming of schoenny

- homiedclown

Put Eichel on the Flames and there finishing 1st in the West.
Put Brodie on the Sabres and we're still finishing 13th in the East.
$4m for a 2nd pair defensive dman isn't exactly "on my knees " for a guy. It's adding a complementary player to pair with a younger, more offensive player.
However thinking Brodie is a Carlsson, Hedman or Suter is a bit off base.

Banned for telling the blogger I'm sorry he inherited the blog when it devolved into this absolute cesspool but oh my god this place is quite possibly the worst thing going on the internet right now.

And if it was the blogger himself, good lord, he doesn't understand sarcasm.

He was sat in the middle of a game for his lost defensive play.

pretty sure every d-man has at some point. especially if they're playing in the nhl in their teens

Getting the puck out of your own zone either yourself or via a great first pass is also defense to me. If you get the puck but don't get it out of your own zone in a controlled manner, you're essentially running in place.

How many teams employ the stand up at the blue line defense? Doesn't seem like many do.

- kingcong39

Ok, hence why we should be able to agree to disagree on that...and why we see it differently.
It could be argued that, the transition game also is Offensive in nature since you are possessing the puck at that point.
Different arguements to be made.

And, the good teams / players stand up at the blueline.
Difficult to do unless properly gapped...and your forwards are back checking.

The fact that you think Dillon is crappy shows you haven't watched him play too often. Or you just think good defenseman have to score a lot.
- adambuffalo

Some posters base players evaluation on points. Only points. Otherwise if they included toughness (like dillon) they would appreciate what he brings to the nhl.

It's not about lack of appreciation, it's about not wanting to overpay for it.

Anything that goes in the blogs is NST/Moneypuck but I like to compare it with mine (nowhere near as good or done) to see the difference as well.

I understand the concept of getting he most out of a player for the value.

Sometimes you have to pay for the intangibles.
Dillon brings what the Sabres have been lacking.

Strong defensive hard nosed play.

19 year old dahlin prior to the head injury and after the head injury, was not a good defensman in his own zone.

He got benched for a reason.
Lots of non chalant swedish plays in my opinion.

Imagine the odds of a 19 year old defenseman actually being good at defense? Just doesn't happen, ever.
Its pretty well known that it takes longer to develop defensive skills.

Dahlin played well offensively.

If cermak isnt available for an (interdivison) trade. Then you sign other guys that are tough.

I like Dillon alot. My type of player.

Doesnt mean hes worth 5 million a year
Doesnt mean hes great at hockey
I've felt like the Sabres are soft and lack toughness
Dillon is hard and tough 🤭

Manson, Gardiner and Gudbranson signed in the past year or so for right around $4m. You also have guys like Tyler Myers signing for $6m, so who knows.

NHL thinks they will lose 30% of their revenue if season cancelled.
I doubt it will, so losses will be less, but if they can't pack arenas when they return...boy that is gonna be a shot in the shorts.
That could have significant implications yo the Cap for 1, 2 or 3 years.
