Right now it is MacKinnon. Auston Matthews is an incredibly gifted scorer with insane hands and vision but something is missing in my opinion. He has gone invisible far too many times against the Bruins.
Either way. No wrong answer here.

He had more goals in the playoffs last year than any player on either team. And that's with 5 less minutes per game than Mack had ion the playoffs.
Now maybe you see why Babcock was a problem. |

I prefer the way Mackinnon plays, but Matthews goalscoring is pretty tough to argue with.
End of the day I think Matthews has the ability to have a bigger impact on any individual game. - BINGO!
I agree. I would love to have either player. If forced to choose I would go Mathews (and believe me I am a leaf hater). I have seen him take over games more than I have seen Mackinnon take over games. Consistency is the next step in AM's development and it will happen. |

Why do you have a bias against any team that is not the Leafs?? - Tonybere
Because they have all hurt me so badly, on purpose. |

Well, he's not really wrong. Mackinnon took a huge step forward a couple of years back. Not that it means much. And it sure doesn't mean Matthews will take the same step forward at the same age. And last, it's hard to compare the two, because the Avs were so bad back then.
Regardless, questions like this have to be qualified. Are we talking now? How we see their careers unfolding? Are we talking what they've already done in their career?
And to those, I would say right now, it's a tough choice. How their careers unfold? My preference would be Matthews, but again, close. The last question, obviously Mackinnon. |

As a Flames fan, during last years playoffs, MacKinnon single handedly kicked our asses. I have not seen a player take a team on his back the way Mac did. Matthews is a great player. No doubt. But there is this ora of ego around him. Hard to explain it. I watch Mackinnon game in and game out give his all. And when he and/or his team is not playing well, you can tell, and he isnt shy about showing his unhappiness. I feel Mac has more edge. And the his peers rally around him.
Mac can create so much. He makes his teammates play and look better. Matthews already has a great supporting cast. They all compliment one another well. But heading into the playoffs, who would I want marching my troops...MacKinnon without even thinking about it. |

Good answer. When Matthews works as hard in the offseasons, he will exceed MacKinnon. Jmo |

Mackinnon has been a much better playoff performer. That’s not even a close comparison in that category. |

You have got to be kidding with this question?
I think this is one of those attempts to get more site traffic or something because these two players never have been and never will be in the same category. McKinnon is light years ahead of Matthews.
McKinnon is in the conversation of the greatest ever (i.e. tier 1), while there are hundreds of Auston Matthews, (and most in that second or third tier have more heart).
People should stop putting Matthews in these comparisons, it's actually unfair to him. He's not there. |

Great player but come on the guy is tied for 498th all time in points right now.
Let's talk when he passes Alex Semin and Derek Roy..... or Ed Jovanovski. |

I don't think fan bases outside of Toronto have any clue how good an overall players Matthews is. MUCH better than MacKinnon in his own zone.
As for playmaking, sure, MacKinnon puts up more assists (has incredible speed)...but anyone who watches Matthews skate with the puck knows there are only a handful of players who can control the puck as well (MacKinnon is not one of them).
This will be a none conversation in the next few years when Matthews is outshining MacKinnon in virtually every way. Similar to how no one compares Laine to Matthews anymore! - Cooshie
Wtf planet are u from. MacKinnon can’t control the puck ? Outshining virtually every way ? Just look at MacKinnon points look at his playoff performances, this season he put up most of his points while his line mates were injured. He has 40 points more than the next scorer on his team. MacKinnon is dominate and doesn’t disappear like Mathews. Mathews doesn’t make his line mates better. Just has a quick release. He doesn’t dominate play. MacKinnon is far superior than Mathews. Take the tsn and sportsnet leafs bias out of the picture you would see how much better MacKinnon’s game is |

LOL - obviously you have not seen Matthews play hockey.
Matthews is way better at the most important part of hockey - putting pucks in the net! He is better in his own zone, he is better on faceoffs and he is going to leave MacKinnon in his dust for this type of conversation soon enough. Don't be butt sore, just be happy that you have MacKinnon, he is also a great player. |
