Leetch got plastered by Trent Klatt in Game 2 and was useless the rest of the series w a separated shoulder. Kovelev & Sundstrom were already gone w injuries. We had Bill Berg playing top 6 minutes. Shane Churla, Langdon & Dallas Eakins all playing when maybe 1 of them should have been due to injuries. Ken Gernander dressed for a game or 2 as well.

when I think of the '97 team I think of Richter's insanity in the playoffs and Tikkanen's overtime goals

but yeah, Gretzky was a wizard, we should have had one more year of Messier/Gretzky

We woulda been OK I think if Pat didn't get hurt, but the 97 team was already showing leaks in the boat. Don't forget we only finished 4th in the division that year.

97-98 was about as bad as things could have gotten. Not only with with Lafontaine injury, but how guys like Stevens gave us zilch.

I mean thinking that Skrudland and Keane were going to replace Mark Messier, you know, just awful stuff

And the DARK era began. Stevens ugggh. He was never the same after his collision w Rich Pilon in the 93 playoffs. Found with crack in a St Louis motel w a hooker.

I mean I was a dumb kid at the time, but I think even then I knew that probably wasn't going to work. I was hoping that Lafontaine and Stevens would do the heavy lifting though. I mean if we could have even threw out a competent defense after Leetch and Beuke, we still might have been halfway decent despite that

Then Beuke got the concussion tht ended up forcing him to retire from gutless Matt Johnson of the Kings.

Didn't we goon it up against them like 18 months later? I remember a game of us blowing them out pretty bad at home, thought we also did some stuff to them in an overdue response to the Beuke hit.

I keep saying, if that team was remotely healthy, they would have beaten Philly. No Karpovtsev as well.

I think 97 was as much a missing cup as we will remember 2014 as been. Gretz was on fire the entire playoffs. I really do think we would have beaten Detroit. The Wings were a great team and deserved their back to back cups, I just think that Rangers team that particular year was better.

I remember hearing something about Stevens' state when he was with the Pittsburgh. Something about playing in Chicago and then going out partying with other Penguins after the game and then waking up in Boston!!
That's a bender.
