Would this be a straight-out mulligan? I feel not all teams would have to buy out a player. They should be rewarded in that regard in some manner.
If a team needs to buy out a player, they should have to forfeit a draft pick. Nothing outrageous. A 3rd rounder or something.

Chicago Blackhawks - Brent Seabrook
He was great for the Cup winning teams, but he is a shell of himself and just had three major surgeries.
With a cap hit of $6.875 through the end of the 23/24 season, yeah, buh-bye. - MileHighHawks
Man, that deal is a boat anchor. That contract was an albatross before the ink was even dry. |

Ironically, it was celebrated when they got new ownership years ago. It seems to me that owner is putting pressure to rush things (Which ironically is taking longer). Fronm day 1 they've been making rushed signings/tradesd and have not stopped. - RogerRoeper
by most accounts he's been a detriment to the overall good of the franchise, allegedly. |

Has to be Jack Johnson right?! Hear me out, maybe not in this scenario. He might be better as a regular buyout candidate at this point given his AAV ($3.25) and that Pitt is carrying any other buyout penalties at this point. Heck he could even play in Ottawa as a "veteran-presence" if Pitt attaches a pick for their rebuild.
I think the albatross that Pitt can address in this scenario is Patric Hornqvist. His AAV over the next 3 years is $5.3M. He is a round peg in a square hole for this team. He's a dump-and-chase RW, on a speed/skill/possession team. His biggest asset is a net-front presence, and he's damn good at it still. He doesn't fit well with Sid and Jake/Zucker and Rust is a great fit with Malkin. That leaves a $5.3 AAV, almost 34-year old player on the 3rd or 4th line going forward. That's a luxury a contending Cup team can't afford with this cap.
He cannot stay consistently healthy at this point in his career. He offers little defensively. Guentzel has proven he can play that position on the PP1. Outside of being a PP specialist in the crease on the 2nd PP line, there's no return on the investment going forward.
Pitt would be so much better off spending that space on a right-handed, speed winger who is a better fit with Sid or even the 3rd line and play on the left-side of the PP OR on a defenseman to replace Schultz/Johnson next year. Sheary could be brought back to play with Sid for cheap if they go the D route. They will need to replace at least 2 on the blue line.

Sens should buy out Zaitsev instead of Ryan. They need Ryan’s cap hit to stay above the floor and it’s only 2 more years instead of 4. Side note, he’s looked great since he got sober |

It's ironic Leafs are poster boys for being in cap hell, yet it's very difficult to point to any contract to buyout. Any deal can be moved by thyem. - RogerRoeper
that would mean then that they a terribly built team |

But Ottawa is a team that doesn't need a buyout really. They should have a reward for not having a saving grace. |

I hate to say this as he may not return from his injury but Brian Little would be the player that would have to be bought out. His term and money could be used elsewhere. |

For the Preds - I think it would either be Johansen or Turris. Turris has played better than Johansen under the new coaching staff & he's $2MM per year cheaper than Johansen.
Poile would never do it because he just recently signed...but probably third on this list would be Matt Duchene. $8MM per year until he's 37 is pretty steep for his mediocre production to date.

Would buying out Garf cost the Sabres a veritable treasure trove of assets? 5 premium pieces? How much Murrency would GMJB have remaining? |
