Offside should be breaking the plane. No advantage is gained by a skate being an inch off the ice and it puts unnecessary delays in the game.

One of either of these two: the team on the penalty kill cannot ice the puck (why reward the offending team with letting them ice it) or make the power play the full two minutes regardless of whether a goal is scored. The PP ending after a goal was only implemented due to some ridiculous powerplays that are no longer relevant with the parity in the league.

Get rid of the extra point. Either make every game 2 points and get rid of the bonus point or make a regulation win worth 3 points.

Revamp the entire department of player safety and increase fines/suspensions. The league claims to want rid of a number of things but realistically has done nothing to do so when they hand out a $5,000 fine for a crosscheck to somebody's neck or a check, a check to the head, etc.

Mine is easy...drop current playoff seeding system...should go back to original conference seedings 1-8..I dont like that with the 2-3 bracket within division we have seen TB & Toronto square off in the first round when both teams were top 4 in their conference...also would not be opposed to experimenting with league wide playoff bracket based on 1-16 in standings...I like the thought of possibly seeing a Stanley Cup final within same division a la Boston vs TB, NJ vs NYR or CHI vs Dallas

I mentioned something like this a couple years ago, except that I would have 1 vs 8 etc for first 2 rounds in each conference for travel and rivalry purposes. But when it gets down to 4 teams, seed 1 plays seed 4 no matter what conferences the teams are in. If you want to give out conference champion trophies, do it for regular season. Teams are only worried about one trophy in the playoffs, the Stanley Cup. This way its possible the Leafs and Canadiens can be in the final for the cup, Rangers and Islanders, Flames and Oilers, etc. Years ago whoever won between the Red Wings and Avalanche won the cup. Those are teams that should of been in the finals.

One little simple rule can increase scoring in the NHL without any big changes to the equipment, goal size, ice size etc. If the puck breaks the plane of the goal line its a goal. It does not have to be 100% across the goal line. They do this for touchdowns in football. Easy rule to implement to increase scoring.

Give penalties to players whacking hacking, slashing and punching after the whistle is blown. See this crap all the time.

the present cap system which has CDN teams more heavily taxed than US teams, decreases significantly the amount on money available to CDN teams to buy players and also decreases likelhood of star players wanting to sign with CDN teams because of taxed wages. this needs to be addressed or CDN teams may never have a real chance to win the stanley cup in future
- billy1007

Not just Canadian teams that are affected

For example if cap is 81 million
Players take home in dallas is 49 million
In montreal 37.5 million
In Anaheim 39.4 million
Etc.
This truly does need to be addressed

Install Ken Dryden as commissioner and rearrange the Board of Governors so that more forward-thinking, proactive people are the majority. With the next CBA institute tougher fines and penalties for hits from behind, knee on knees, head shots, and stick work. Acknowledge the seriousness and connection between hits to the head and CTE. Get rid of the trapezoid but keep the other rules the same. The game is good now - fast, skillful. But get rid of the stupid excessive cheap shots. And don’t go back to ESPN.

I would absolutely get rid of the shootout. Especially in international play, how often have we had a elimination game or even a gold medal game, have the Overtime end and then decided in the shootout. High flying, end to end, lots of chances and exciting hockey and then the shootout the deflates all the excitement. Biggest recent example was the Olympics gold medal game in Womens hockey. Canada vs US. That it was bangin' and i was so mad when it went to the shootout

Same needs to happen in the NHL! NO MORE SHOOTOUT! 3 on 3 until you get a winner and no one goes home disappointed.

Regardless of divisional alignment, wild cards, etc. Once you get your 16 playoff teams, seed them 1v16, 2v15, 3v14...8v9, then no reseeding after rounds.

You upset the number 2 seed? Congrats, your "reward" is either a 7 or 10 seed, not the number 1.

The obvious complaint is travel.

Buuuuuuuuuut, when you conceivably could have Nashville get a WC and play rounds against Vancouver, then Anaheim, then Dallas, then Columbus and you actually had first round matchups of Ana/Win and Det/TB a handful of years ago, throw that travel argument out the window. Then the only arguemtn is time zones and TV times. But again, you already have teams in the west playing across 3 time zones, so nope on that argument, too.

As for the NHL, wider ice surface.

Set a conservative cap number for the next 5-10 years. Keep it conservative to protect against situations we are in now but at the same time have it grow very gradually.
Stop with the buyouts, let GM’s who make horrible mistakes July 1rst or whenever pay for it. Stop letting them off the hook.

- Ross77

Good luck getting anyone to agree to that, especially with Seattle and record U.S tv deal coming.
