Bottom line. Cap ain't going up what was projected several weeks ago by Daley. Most likely going up VERY LITTLE, or staying flat. Not good for my Hawks. But, we are 2-3 years away from being competative, so not a killer. But, also not good for a Leafs team with half the Cap used on 4 guys. Going to make Dubas's job even harder if he clings to his idea of moving none of them. Looking like the salary structure going forward won't change much. Going to be tough for Dubas to improve that defense unless Barrie comes back on a low deal or he finds some veterans willing to play for less to be a Leaf. Sandin will be a help as he develops. He will be a good one. But, young yet and likely couple years away from being solid enough in own end to be a big minute guy you can count on.

I have no worries about any cap related issues at all. People can make up all the doom and gloom poop all they want. Bettman is not a stupid man and he knows that when the NHL does return, the league will need to make up for lost revenue. To have the leagues top money generating teams not being able to put the best possible product on the ice is just not good business.
Trust me there will be many creative ideas tabled on the subject, an artificial inflated cap is already being mentioned. Plus if the season does get canceled you can almost guarantee they will look at going over the collective bargaining agreement including things like rollbacks, buyouts and excreta. It would plain (frank)ing stupid not to and a potential league suicide, going into 2021 with a possible lockout looming over your head.

A lot of people think that the Leafs only option to get a good defenseman is to trade Nylander because of the number $6.9.... The other option that no one usually considers is Ceci walks $4.5 plus a trade of Johnsson $3.4 is $7.9.

Agreed. But the core four needs to include a d-man. Preferably a guy who can play twenty five plus per game. Or unload one of the big four for high draft picks/high end prospects, which will free up cap space so they can go all in on a guy like Pietrangelo. Solves two problems with one swing. Leafs will still have plenty of offence. Picks are becoming scarce. If you're hating the idea of losing one of Marner or Nylander you better brace yourself. Dubas has options but free agents aren't one of them as things stand

Include Reilly, and you have a core 5.. You got your core Dman.. Overpaying for a UFA like Pietro is not good business. They need 3-4mil/yr guys that know how to play the position... If you want to know what overpaying your backend looks like, go to San Jose.. I think what people fail to realize is a team with 5 Doughtys still gets scored on..
The tough defensive teams play a tough defensive system.

Boston leads the league with fewest goals against.. No Doughty, No Pietrolangelo, No Hedman.. 40yr old Chara isn't the reason. Rask who has been solid in his through his career, has also been known to go stretches letting on soft goals, and is not suddenly the best goalie in the league... They don't exactly have the smartest coach either...

They have an EXPERIENCED core, and filled in the holes with the right pieces...
