I think an 29yo Alex peteranglo is that type of RHD - senstroll
Ya and he is just money if he makes it to ufa.
Would you trade Freddie to free up $5 million with emergence of Campbell? |

No.
Freddy is a legit starter, and better. Campbell is a perfect backup, let him be that. |

You have 1 more year of Andersen and then he is going to want 8-9 million. Plus Rielly needs a new deal. If this Covid 19 ruins the cap the following year the leafs may have to make some tough choices. |

I understand that, but Freddy has done so much for the team, and I’m not ready to give up on him yet. The Leafs went so long w/o a legit starter. Now that we have Campbell to take some of the workload, I expect Freddy’s numbers to improve. And if they figure out the defensive woes, I think he could be a vezina candidate again. |

I like the guy, but I think it’s a stretch to give him the net with such a small sample size. |

another LHD, the Leafs are already full with Muzzin, Rielly , Sandin and Dermott
I think its a pass for that reason - senstroll

it's not a tough choice.
from most to less importance (taking into account abilities, specific skillset, rest of the team build, caphit) it's:
1. Matthews
2. Marner
3. Rielly
4. Tavares
5. Hyman
6. Andersen
7. Nylander

I like Freddie too just throwing ideas around.
Would the leafs be better with adding pietrangelo on the back end with Campbell in net but lose Freddie and johnsson to make up the money to sign pietrangelo
Or
Keep Freddie and johnsson with Campbell staying backup |

There’s a lot of hypotheticals here.
I don’t necessarily think they’d have to acquire Piets to stabilize the back end, but if they’re going to go that route, Kap/Dermott/Mango or Nylander would have to go.
I hope the NHL says “(frank) it” for one time only, let’s boost the cap because the virus messed so much up already. Or sets up a luxury tax type of deal so the star UFA’s don’t get squeezed out.

It was a stretch to give Freddie the net too. They traded for him and he was a backup behind Gibson but they immediately signed him to a 5 year deal and made him the starter before he even played a game.
Campbell seems to be doing well in this market so far. He was also a high draft pick so he has always had a lot of promise. |

That’s fair. I read somewhere that Joe Woll will be vying for the starter position as well. |

With the unexplainably high grade the Leafs d-men received here they should have the top defense in the league instead of one of the softest, mistake pron and over-rated one in the NHL. |

i think if AP is free as a UFA, you can look at moving Willie I guess to make it work.
I am not sold on Campbell as a reliable starter |

I say trade him now and get some assets back while you can (he's UFA after next season). There's a glut of goalies on the UFA market this season that you could possibly sign for half of what Freddie currently makes. Or the Leafs could look at bringing in a guy like Timur Bilyalov, who seemingly defies reality at 5'10, as a backup.
Use the money you're saving on his contract to put towards signing Pietro.
Let's not forget that a guy like Lehner was a legit Vezina candidate with the right pieces in front of him. If the Leafs shore up their d-corps with a stud RHD (playing 25-26 mins a night) and make sure that forwards are committed to a 200' game, I don't see why we necessarily need Freddie in net.
I'm really thinking the Leafs will have a tough time re-signing him when he hits the market after next season. That's one of the things that concerns me most. I'd hate for him to walk and have nothing to show for it. |

Freddy and Lehner are in the same category (said that when Lehner was a UFA, before he joined the Islanders).
You cannot have a worse goalie (Campbell) in net and expect that you're set in goal.

Emergence?
You mean the 2-3 games he played well?
Doesnt exactly mean hes ready to be 60 game starter. |
