Point taken. Didn't realize he's signed for 4 more years at that price. Changes my view. - Michael Pachla
Yeah it's a tough deal to take on.
Given where the roster is right now, particularly up front, they've either got to swing for the fences or go full moneyball on this. |

I'd take him. Anything Botts can do to keep, and add, talent to the top-9 should be done. - Michael Pachla
I agree with that sentiment, sure.
But in reality for Johnson specifically, the GM needs to be judicious in reconstructing the roster.
At age 30 by next season, 4 more years at $5m for ~35 pts and declining, I don't think that is the best investment. Personally, I'd pay more for younger player with a higher probability of increased production...or brings more elements to his game through the contract term. |

I just want him to add top-9 talent. If he can do that the effects will reverberate through the entire forward group. |

Very good post, and then you can slot players where they should be. |

He had a great start and great finish. He and Skinner were money early in the season. Johansson, Olofsson and Kuhan really clicked for the few games they were a line. Although he has his struggles at center, Johansson is a pro and when you continue to add talent in the top nine, he and his linemates have more of an opportunity to succeed - Michael Pachla
skinner had 7 goals in the first 13 games
then 7 goals in the last 46 games
they really need to fix this sh!t for 2020-21 season |

What are you moving him for? - Michael Pachla
I like Mojo as a 3rd liner, and probably at LW for optimal value.
But at $4.5m, and with the LW in good shape between Olo, Skins, and Kahun, while the RW currently has only has Rhino as a natural there, I would want to rebuild that side.
And, while we are on the RW side now, I'd really like to use the $7.0m + projected for Rhino on someone who brings different elements to his game. I'm not a Rhino hater by any means, but on Line 1 for that money, I want more. I'm not anywhere near Boss34 level, but having a 1RW with some physicality to his game would be ideal. |

Mojo played the right side in New Jersey and Washington.
For one year. whether it’s Mojo/Kahun/Olofsson one of those guys can play the right side and we’ll be in good shape. |

With that statement, the "for 1 year" is the key.
I'd move him at the TDL rather than resign him unless he had 35 G's and agreed to a 2 or 3 year deal (not happening).
Let's optimize the roster by placing players in their natural position.
The GM has a grand opportunity to make that happen.
Anything less, within reason, is just piss poor.
Within reason means
-For 1 year
-Plays multiple positions equally
-contract due to expire soon
Etc. |

They have top line and a mid-six line of jojo, olo and kahun. Need to make another mid-six line |

I agree with you in getting assets back for Mojo as a rental, the only problem being that if we are in a playoff spot/in the hunt I feel like that would be a tough sell. I’d ultimately rather keep him as an own rental. |

Why are we trading top-9 talent? Even at the deadline when we should (operative word) be in contention for a playoff spot. |

I'd go with Laine over Gaudreau if feasible. I think it may cost less to acquire, but more to sign. Reinhart and Montour for Laine and Buff? |

Seems to me that Gaudreau plays, and is successful at playing, the game that Botts, and us, want to see. |

And Laine is 5 years younger and has transitioned his game this season into more than just a sniper. He is much bigger and stronger and I think long term would be more of an asset |

I have no problem with Laine. However, his cap hit now is the same as Gaudreau. A year from now it'll meet or surpass Skinner. That's a lot of cheese tied up in wingers. |
