I'm glad we're actually talking hockey, and sorry for bringing up Covid 19 here again. But ...

Say what you want about Cuomo, but his updates destroy Trump's updates ... and I don't even hate Trump like most of America does. I think Cuomo is doing an excellent job during all of this.

Carry on.

Why are we downplaying Olofsson now?
- Herzeleid

would you pay a guy with 20 nhl goals 5 mil a year, dinged up last 2 seasons

a bridge deal is how we end up with having to overpay reinhart instead of having him locked in at a decent value

the contract floated out there was 4 years 5 mil per

IMO that is the worst of the 3 options

either A get him a 2 year bridge deal

or B lock him up for 8 years

I still think 5 years is the sweet spot. That should be a cup window if Botterill decides that he's ever going to do more than just be the rootin tootinest, hardest trying GM in the league. That keeps the AAV down and lets the sabres really stock up on talent.

I think we all know that Botterill will bridge him though so this is pretty moot

Olofsson isn’t really good.

Locking him up long term isn’t a good idea at all

we can't complain about never having value contracts if we never try to sign one

He’s not a value player.

Dominik Kahun >>> Olofsson

Lock him up to a 5 year 3-3.5 mil deal first

So do you think there will never be a player out there ever who's offense outweighs their total game?

You don't think having a 25 goal scorer for 5 million is good because his corsi is bad?

Remember, theres a total picture

I’m not saying it’s “bad”. I’m saying it’s not value.

He’s not a very good player. He’s a shooter who can’t score off the PP.

I’m pretty confident at 5 mil that’s not valuable

You have to decide if you think the powerplay has any value or if its useless. You walk some weird line between them depending on what argument you're trying to make.

It has some value.

Taking feeds from 26 and 9 and leading us to a bottom 10 PP is......5 mil worth? Nah

My last thing on Olofsson for now:

The whole reason you pay up for shooting talent is because it translates to goals. More specifically, high end shooting talent can get you the kind of goals the average person cant

If your top line generates lets say an XGF of 20 and you want to get to 28. The cost of getting to that is say 12 million. If you've got a high end shooter who regularly beats his XG who wants 7 million, this is where you get a lot of value. Because even though your XG may not improve, that shooting talent can bring the same results that an improved XG would for less money because he's consistently beating his expected goals percentage.

Olofsson has shown the ability to do this at one game state, the one with lots of open ice and dishes from Dahlin and Eichel.

At 5v5, his goals above expected is 0.3 and again thats playing with two of the best playmakers on the team. If the great shot isn't translating into goals above expected somewhere other than the power play, im not sure what we're paying for.

For comparison sake, what would happen if we swapped Olofsson for Kahun on the top line and top power play(I use him because the total on ice results look like exact average which is convenient). How different would production be on either? Does Kahun only have half as many goals on the PP but twice as many at 5v5? He did outperform his XG by quite a bit.

It's basically Patrik Laine lite. We know the raw talent is there, but there are too many question marks for a long term deal now.

That's a bit of a strawman argument. The powerplay was dead last for the entire stretch he was out.

So my strawman argument is that his shooting talent is so good that he dragged the corpse of a pathetic powerplay to at least be a threat, which is worth 5 mil
