1956 Stanley Cup on NHL Network now.
1957 up at 5:30 PM CDT

Straight sticks.
Jaques Plante vs. Glenn Hall without masks.
Hall, with Plante backing him up, would later backstop the expansion Blues to the Stanley Cup Final.

Watching the ‘57 on now - at Montreal - looks like there’s no glass above the side boards.

No - looks like fans resting their arms on the top of the boards. And - there is glass above the end boards.

Straight sticks - many more backhand goals - no full slap shots.

At Boston (1957) there seems to be a foot of glass above the side boards.

I don’t know - they wore the same protection that today’s fans wear.

Unlike the players....

For those in the Chicago market at 7 pm NBCSports Chicago has game 4 of the 2010 Hawks Nashville series. Hawks down 2-1 in the series at this point. They are only televising Hawks playoff wins so there will be a happy ending.

Saints coach Sean Payton tests positive for COVID 19. Says he felt the first symptoms Sunday the day after he went to a horse racing track. Dumb ass should have known better to avoid crowds.

Yes, very fair caveat to the Hogs season. Not just injuries on their squad but also to the Hawks requiring call ups which diluted the Rockford roster.
- AEL_Fox

Yes but over the last how many years injuries even out, they're still bad over that period and contributing little quality to the big team. After years of drafting low and trading picks we're probably fortunate that they do have some quality Dmen built up, but cup quality top 6 appear non existent? I wouldn't be surprised to see more d-prospects traded if we sign Mitchell.

Agree with each point of your post.

There is a relatively strong pool of D prospects. If many of them pan out, the Hawks can keep the strongest of the strong and deal the rest for other assets.

On the other end, a solid pool of forward prospects for the bottom 6 and a few that could play 2nd line if needed. But you're right, not much in the way of top 6 talent.

Besides Dach and Nylander, who are already on the big club, there really isn't anyone else.

If there is a sleeper in the bunch, I'm guessing either Kurashev or Teply but that's a huge stretch.

Then again, the Kings probably thought the same of Kubalik.

AEL, what about Quenneville, I know he was meh when he was up with the Hawks. He seemed real uncomfortable playing RW, how would he do on LW

When Quenneville is healthy and on his game, he can be a capable power forward who plays a heavy style, competes hard, and is a volume shooter.

Not sure if his inability to stick in the NHL is due to being played on the wrong side or if his water level is as an AHL 1st liner and borderline NHLer.

At some point, other forward prospects are just going to leapfrog him where there simply won't be a spot on the Hawks roster. Same with Sikura.

I am pleased to admit that I was wron about Kirby Dach. Despite all situations being different, I found Dach to make more of an impact game to game then Hughes or Kakko.
- nickmo2699

You can't dispel Hughes speed as an attacker, and Kakko will always be a load to stop when he has the puck and is driving the play, but, I think you are correct, Dach is clearly instinctive in his200 foot game.

When he gets stronger and every situation becomes instinctive, he may jump up as an elite offensive attacker.

Yeah it looks like we got the right guy at three and one who may be ranked higher when the redrafts begin.

My wife and I were in Disneyworld Animal kingdom and Disney Studios ten days ago...We are smart enough to stay self-quarantined so we don't spread this to you Republicans - I wouldn't want you to die before you get to defend the party of the corporations in November.
I will let you know if the long lines on Avatar and Star Wars land infected us.

We dumbasses should have gone to the CDC website and followed advance cautions before ever thinking executive leadership would be honest about things instead of trying to play it off as opposition fear monger when they knew what they knew.

If you ARE going out, make sure you ridicule the people who don't have it wearing the masks thinking that the air around them is the only way to contract it - that can of beans or bananas just needed one touch by an infected person who rubbed their beard and touched that can or piece of fruit.

Stay safe...and I will help keep you safe as that is what WE do.

Which is why I was OK with getting Nylander for Jokiharju - even ignoring the rumors about Blackhawk management not liking his attitude. They have some quality defensive prospects in the system - they need some top-6 potential - as maddeningly frustrating as Nylander has been, the talent seems to be there, if he can get it together. He is still only 22 this month, with only one full season in the Show.

I’m ok with McDonough staying - he’s done an excellent job for Rocky on the business side, and I’m guessing (but only guessing - no inside knowledge at all) that his reputation for interfering in the on-ice product is largely overstated. Is he sayin “no, Stan, you can’t make that trade / that draft pick / that free agent signing / that call-up from Rockford”? Is he telling Colliton who to play, what lines to put out? Has he killed deals by slowing the process down (and ill give his critics a bit of leeway on that one - I don’t know, but it’s possible)? I’m not sure I’ve heard a real source quoted about a real incident. I just think he is too smart a businessman to get involved with the hockey ops side.

I’m ok with Bowman staying. I still think he did a very good job retooling after the 2010 sell off to get to the 2013-2015 run.

He didn’t do a very good job in keeping them at the top for the last 5 seasons (has it really been 5 seasons since that very rainy night in June in the UC?).

But his recent moves have been mostly positive - the draft picks coming up through the system, the deals for Murphy and deHaan (if he can get his shoulder fixed), trading nothing for Kubalik, even signing Lard...uhhh, I mean Lehner (who did mostly play well for them at least until his last several starts under the TDL cloud and his concern about the lack of a new contract). Another big summer (or whenever) coming up for him - resigning Strome and Kubalik to reasonable deals, the draft with probably another top-10 pick....

It’s Colliton that I’m concerned about. I’m not sure that I’ve seen much improvement in several areas - continuing inability to transition out of the dzone into an offensive pressure situation being the one I notice most. His line combinations often - until the last couple of weeks, were confusing at best.

But he seems to have done a good job with the rookies (or, in a positive sense, allowed his assistants to be successful in that) - Dach, Boqvist, Kubalik, even Nylander have progressed. As the next successful Cup run will depend on them - and other young players coming up - for that reason alone, I’m pretty much ok with him staying around.

- StLBravesFan

Im still convinced JC is here to play the kids. Hawks in a way are appealing to rookie FA and their own draft picks by playing them at thre NHL level

I have a sense once the FO believes the team is ready to compete for a cup a coaching change will happen, we still have a ways to go

Wait. You think a 4th for Foles was a bad move by Pace? You are aware the Bears aren't paying all of that contract. right?

Do I like all the moves Pace has made? No. People forget how bereft of talent the Bears were when Pace took over. I think there are only 2 players on the team from before Pace took the job. Fuller and the punter. I wish he get over his fondness for some of his small college picks but overall, I think he has done a decent job.

- Elbows15

The Bears had minimal talent when Pace took over. It's been a long time since we've had someone who can draft 2 NFL starters every year, agree about the small school picks.

Pace is in win now mode, I believe Foles can be cut next year with no cap implications and i guess winning a SB outscoring the Patriots doesn't mean much. FWIW Foles is 1 of the best QBs at run/ pass option offense
