The NHL rarely suspends after the first incident.

I suspect the NHL will let covid19 have another chance before suspending anything.

- Fakepartofme

NHL doesn't bring in money like the other top leagues so I expect they will be more lenient on the matter until it is basically forced to shut down.

But who the hell knows..

I just want hockey to continue so I'm being overly optimistic

The majority of the world will contract this

Just like the flu

The coronavirus will circulate through seasons

The H1N1. Remember that? It was one of the most common flu virus last season

They have to take extreme caution because there are way too many people in our country who take advantage of the health care system. They won’t be able to handle all these Coronaviruse, common cold and flu cases coming in thinking they need critical care.

Listen to the CDC. Ignore the media.

The CDC reports scary numbers every year about diseases. Maybe people will start paying attention.

Yesterday, the CDC, FDA and National Institute of Health Infectious Diseases all testified before congress. They said, under oath, that coronavirus is 10 times more lethal than the flu

may have not been that different.

the vaccine has somewhere between 10% and 50% effectiveness depending on the year. less than half of people get the vaccine.

Note: i am generally a big fan of vaccinations. the flu one is kinda meh to me.

No, the nhl is more dependent on gate financials where as the other league have huge local media deals.

No only 80 000 people died...so apparently its ok.

Without the flu vaccine, how high would that number be?

- Fakepartofme

Higher. That’s how math works.

Which flu

There are multiple strains

And also that number is coming from confirmed cases of the Corona but estimated numbers from the flu.

I’ll guarantee you the number of people who have had or have the Corona is double 120,000

You weren’t wrong.

The NHL had 4 or 5 confirmed H1N1 cases from what I can remember.

Budaj was the first.

the cdc's flu estimates are based on a couple hundred thousand laboratory confirmed flu cases each year.

from there, they get to an estimate of 30-50 million for the entire flu season.

i would bet corona cases are at least double. mabye 10-fold. maybe x100. nobody has a clue at this point.

a lot of people are probably afraid to go to the doctor right now, particularly in certain countries.

I haven’t been sick since I retired 6 years ago. In the past day or so I’ve started to think differently about what I do. I’m 66 and relatively healthy so I imagine if I ever came across this virus I’d likely only get quite sick but I do now think a bit differently. I used to go to the grocery store every day after deciding what to cook. I’ll probably do 4 or 5 days shopping at once now. I canceled a haircut I booked kind of on a whim a few days ago. I really don’t feel like going to a mall to have a stranger fuss around my head to cut my hair when I look great anyway.

I don’t think this counts as panic. I’m more aware of the impacts on my own health and those around me and I have no problem if employers start shutting down workplaces even if it means losing hockey. I’m more concerned about people who are marginally employed - in bars and restaurants- who are (frank)ed if those start to close.

Oh for sure, the Bruins are not allowed to be suspended under the current CBA.

I have to think they suspend the season, but not sure what that means for the playoffs.

Columbus and SJ said they will play games without fans in attendance.. So, either way, money will be lost from those ticket sales.

- PatC80

To protect the public health - end the season now and award the Bruins the CUP.
It's the responsible thing to do. We don't care about no stinkin' asterix.

100% agree.
as well scientists are in a difficult position since they are asked for expert advice, but there are a lot of uncertainties and things not known - even (or especially) for them.

in any case, most countries will implement the containment issues too late - when the harm has already been done.
by harm i mean transmission to 50%+ of population.
it sucks for elderly and people with conditions that put them at risk.
it is very worrysome due to the 'mass hysteria' effect.
economy will suffer quite a bit.

the good point however will be, that the general public will finally realise that:
- we should not privatise public health systems (any further) ; state should make sure to have an extra capacity in case for emergency outbreaks
- significant investment is required next 2 decades to develop new vaccines, medicines and diagnostic tools for infectious diseases - in particular in context of antimicrobial resistance (WHO and 'rich countries' focusing too much on NCDs).
coronavirus is quite mild compared to what a new resistant strain of tuberculosis could do..

There are reports of young adults who have a stuffy nose and that’s it and tested positive.

The CDC will soon have to come out with an estimate and not a confirmed case number.

you are 100% right.
fyi - in (some countries) in europe supermarkets get sold out early in the morning ; still restocked every day.
the planned grocery delivery that was supposed to come here today (planned it in over a week ago) might not arrive as these are encountering big delays due to 400% increase of online demands over last 2 days (not too sure what that has to do with my order of over a week ago, but still).

If you live in South America, stock up.

In Canada? Yeah you’ll be taken care of.
