In Canada 3500 people die from Influenza evey year. Panic.....
- bobbyisno1

Funny how no one here knows how bad the 2017-18 flu season was.

It killed over 80,000 Americans.

Canada is a couple weeks behind other countries. Taking action now to contain the spread of a virus that they do not have a vaccine for is smart.

and its not about the death totals, its how quickly it spread and cripples health care facilities...possibly causing others to miss out out on getting the care they need.

If there was not flu shots and such, now many would die?

but again thats only part of the equation.

Depends on the strain.

Apparently uncertainty and the unknown gives people comfort.

Isn't that a reason to take a new virus seriously, especially since it spreads more readily and is deadlier?

Funny how no one here knows that over 600,000 Americans died from can cancer last year but only 29 were killed by lightening strikes. Makes ya think.

People still comparing this to the flu need to educate themselves.
No matter how far they bury their heads in sand, it won’t prevent them from contracting it.

- DrunkenCanuck

The majority of the world will contract this

Just like the flu

The coronavirus will circulate through seasons

The H1N1. Remember that? It was one of the most common flu virus last season

They have to take extreme caution because there are way too many people in our country who take advantage of the health care system. They won’t be able to handle all these Coronaviruse, common cold and flu cases coming in thinking they need critical care.

Listen to the CDC. Ignore the media.

The CDC reports scary numbers every year about diseases. Maybe people will start paying attention.

Even if they follow the NBA's lead, and I think they will, they will suspend the season first. The decision to cancel, if it comes at all, won't come for another few weeks, from either league.

Vaccines are great.

Brings percentages down that you will contact an illness.

I'd rather talk hockey, so I'm copying this from Mike's blog.

1) I agree. It was pretty obvious that we've been missing Rielly the second you saw him control the puck in the back-end. "Oh yeah. That's really helpful" type of thing.

2) Some type of response would be good - even if it's just grabbing him and letting him know you know it was deliberate. It also hopefully wakes the refs up a bit. There were at least 3 disparate plays where Tampa tried to rattle Freddy in some fashion, and the refs called only 1. As a former goalie, I am a gigantic proponent of the blue ice offering protection. If I'm in the blue ice and the puck isn't and you hit me without being directed in, go sit for your 2 minutes or less, asshat. That is completely on the officials for letting that poop happen repeatedly. Honestly, the players shouldn't HAVE to step up.

3) Freddy was outstanding against Tampa. I think the criticism of Freddy is being misinterpreted. No one is saying that he sucks. Everyone is saying he hasn't consistently played as well as he is capable of; this game was an example of what he's capable of, and it's what we want from him on a game-to-game basis. If he does that, he goes back to being the hero and MVP of the team.

4) Agreed. They need to stop being so predictable in what they do. Their zone entries are still terrible. Watching Tyson Barrie slow to a crawl, turn 180 degrees and telegraph a pass . . . how does that type of a drop back help anyone? Anyway, I despite the way the Leafs use the drop back on the powerplay.

If they do play tonight, hopefully they take the game seriously knowing there is a chance of the season being cancelled or not.

The NHLPA has exactly the same financial incentive as the NHL to keep playing: 50% of hockey-related revenues.

This is going to be interesting.

Although my money is on them suspending the season for now.

Except for the Bruins - the Bruins will keep playing, because the NHL never suspends the Bruins.

Bang on.

People can spin it any way they want. This is overhyped.

And their problem is getting triggered when they see “overhyped”. They instantly think you don’t care and are treating this like it’s nothing.

That’s false. This is a problem, a problem that the world has to deal with. Do your part as a citizen and don’t let the media overblow this.

When people bring up the flu they aren’t comparing. They are simply stating that people don’t take their precautions when they hear 80K died in the US for the flu. But now they take their precautions when a new virus pops up.

Dail down the panic. There are way too many people in this country that panic and cause
Problems.

No only 80 000 people died...so apparently its ok.

Without the flu vaccine, how high would that number be?

The NHL rarely suspends after the first incident.

I suspect the NHL will let covid19 have another chance before suspending anything.

may have not been that different.

the vaccine has somewhere between 10% and 50% effectiveness depending on the year. less than half of people get the vaccine.

Note: i am generally a big fan of vaccinations. the flu one is kinda meh to me.
