*NHL IS SAID TO LEAN TOWARD JOINING THE NBA IN SUSPENDING SEASON on Bloomberg news right now..

NHL Is Said to Lean Toward Joining the NBA in Suspending Season
By Scott Soshnick
(Bloomberg) -- The National Hockey League is leaning toward following the National Basketball Association’s lead and suspending its season in response to the coronavirus, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The organization is expected to propose halting play on Thursday, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.
The NBA decided to suspend its season after a player tested positive for coronavirus, roiling its attempts to maintain business as usual during the outbreak. A player on the Utah Jazz received the diagnosis on a preliminary basis, the NBA said Wednesday. The test result came shortly before the Jazz were to play the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the game was scrapped. The NBA later announced it was also suspending the season for its developmental league, the G League.
The move followed the NCAA deciding to bar fans from the March Madness college basketball tournament, and Major League Baseball shuffling its schedule to cope with the outbreak.
Publicly, the NHL said Wednesday night that it was “continuing to consult with medical experts and is evaluating the options. We expect to have a further update tomorrow.”
The league’s union, meanwhile, said it was “in continuous contact with the NHL regarding the coronavirus and the recent announcement by the NBA.”
“These discussions will continue tomorrow morning, and we will consult with players before commenting further,” the players’ association said in a statement.Related

Islanders better win tonight and get into a playoff position. Just in case the regular season gets canceled and they just pickup the season with the playoffs at some point.

I can't imagine they'd use points, given the fact that teams haven't played equal amounts of games. I think they'd probably just cancel the season wholesale, but if they do pickup the playoffs maybe they'll use points percentage...which would have the Isles just squeak in at the 2nd wildcard spot

Trading stopped again. Economically this is going to destroy this country for a very long time. This panic is unbelievable.

If that were the case, I think they'd go by % rather than raw points, right? Columbus is one point ahead, but they've played two more games.

They should suspend the season right now and keep it that way for exactly as long as it takes for Cizikas to be 100%.

Yeah maybe they'll postpone the season until October and just give everyone zero points and zero games played again so everything is fair and go from there

This is just crazy man. I never thought they would suspend unless a player was infected. That said it's just a matter of time.
I wonder how and if this will effect the cap as it relates to revenues lost?

Lots of talk that the numbers the NHL through out were pretty much horsepoop. It would've jacked up the escrow rates and pissed off all the players if it rose that much, plus now there's HRR issues, if a suspension/cancellation comes into play, which probably means it's not going to rise by very much. But I gather that it was never really going to rise as high as they made it sound no matter what.

Don't know about the actual Cap increase which the NHL was estimating was horse poop or not, however the salaries of the players will go up as a result so pros and cons for all really.
On the cap issue, I wonder if the NHL and NHLPA have any kind of insurance against anything like this causing lost revenue's? Not for a virus epidemic, but any kind of issue's causing loss of revenue?

Hearing as part of the #NHL's due diligence process, teams have been asked to provide arena building availability through the end of July.

More important matters than business side of things right now, but an interesting factor for NHL here (long-term) is I’m told the League does not have business-interruption insurance. Will have affects, to what extent is too early to guesstimate.

I read it was 20 times more contagious then coronavirus now of course I can’t remember where I read it or find it😂

When all is said and done with this there will be twice as many fatalities linked to the flu this season than the coronavirus. Book it. People love panic these days.

The main difference is sars wasn't communicable until symptoms showed whereas this transmits asymptomatically so its spreading and people can have it for up to two weeks and not even know they are sick and transmitting it. That's what makes it scary, personally I believe thousands more have it as the numbers are only cases confirmed. If that's true then the denominator isnt a true reflection of cases and the death rate is much lower than 2 to 3% and therefore it's not as dangerous unless you're older than 65 or already sick

Source says Gary Bettman has just put it on the table to NHL governors: put the season on hold. So far no opposition from owners on the call.

They need to shut everything down for a few weeks to stop the spread then if that happens get it going again. Something must be more serious then they are letting on as multibillion dollar sports league dont just cancel their seasons.

ESPN should have plenty of coverage on the consistency of LeBron James' bowel movements to keep you occupied

"Jim, I'm being told LeBron's stool was a bit loose today and had quite a pungent stench. Sources close to the situation are reporting that this is due to an uptick in his protein powder intake"
