I've never met anyone who's been to Antarctica, so I just want to know if Antarctica is real or not. Figured a hockey message board would be a good place to ask.
Hopefully the comment section doesn't get hijacked by Coronavirus "experts" today. Bill works hard to supply us with content, we should be discussing hockey here - dubc55

Are Ghosts real? Bigfoot? The Loch Ness monster? I heard you were the guy to come to.

A can only confirm that Bigfoot IS real, he's just a blurry monster. Not sure about the others. You'll need to go to water polo message boards for the other two.
Yea, let's make light of that. People that age aren't important.
My elderly parents live with me. My Father is 81 currently undergoing radiation and is recovering from major cancer surgery. He also has diabetes. My Mother is 78 with COPD. But hey they're near 80. I have to go out into the public every day for work. I'm washing my hands a hundred times a day. Literally. - MJL
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the cases so far has resulted from being in proximate contact with an infected person. Johns Hopkins says there is evidence the virus might linger in the air even after the ill person is no longer in that space. (https://www.hopkinsmedici...s-disease-2019-vs-the-flu)
Further, the incubation period is quite long, stretching up to almost 12 days, with a median of 5. For the flu it is 2-4 days. Most cases are mild.
What I am getting at is that your parents are in a high-risk situation. Washing hands is great, but sadly, it is not enough. You may never know you or others they interact with were a carrier. If you can implement it, think of a quarantine situation in your home. Minimize the interaction of your parents with other people, especially for prolonged periods of time, or in close quarters. Think of dinners apart, a section of your living space reserved for them, a bathroom. Cut down on their social entertainment. All of this to the extent possible and that you are comfortable with, of course.
If anyone gets it, make contingency plans for a quarantine. Things will get chaotic once someone is in a situation like that so why not plan ahead? The most comprehensive quarantine prep details I am aware of are here:
There are several countries that have been stellar in controlling the disease: Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and after a huge initial lapse, China. We are not one of them. We have a poor infrastructure for infectious diseases, a poor mentality for dealing with such things, we were absolutely unprepared, and there is extreme ignorance that comes from the very top. The disease is not on a good track here.
The only good news is an early spring and greater humidity in the air (respiratory illnesses spread much less if the air is moist). And no, I am not being alarmist. Don't take my word about the disaster bit. Tom Bossert, Homeland Sec advisor from 2016-17, is doing the rounds now warning about this. He had an op-ed in Washington Post yesterday. In the public policy circles where I work, everybody knows this. Sure miracles could occur, we could get lucky. But chances are we have about a week to two before the situation gets out of control.
And yes, of course they should ban all large gatherings, including live sports. People are scrambling, hoping against hope that the pace slows, not wanting to risk economic health. But the case for it had occurred long ago. France banned crowds of more than 5000 more than a week ago, now they have banned crowds of more than 1000.
No. It’s called having a day job and not always having the time to read long blogs. - SuperSchennBros
Don't you think it will be wiser time management to get all the information from his highly informative prose rather than spending the extra time to query for it in the comments and then comb through all of it for a response? A lot of us also have day jobs yet seem to not have a problem sussing the time management thing all out.
I'm not trying to knock you in particular. I'm trying to promote Bill's reporting. If anyone's not making the time to digest it, they're doing themselves a disservice.
If you have it and are treated can you get it again? - ClaudeFather
There are some instances of patients being declared virus free and then testing + again, but they are rare, and there is skepticism that they were ever virus free to begin with.
That song "After the Flesh" by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult from the movie The Crow is pretty awesome. I just looked into their catalog, and was very upset to see that none of their songs sound similar at all, although they are pretty (frank)ed up.
