I like Foley when he sticks to hockey. On some occasions, though, would be willing to trade him for a draft pick.
- gabriel

Critical of Foley, what a surprise. Him and Eddie have toned down their inside jokes a lot so we are all thankful for that. Foley still has earned carte blanche as far as I'm concerned. He has a knack for calling a game efficiently like nobody else.

Just heard on NHL Network that Toews is the first player to reach 50 shootout goals.

Can’t really blame Bowman, but three of his most important off-season adds have wound up on LTIR and out for the season - Shaw, deHaan, Smith.

And another almost cost them a point or two last nite (however unimportant that point or two might be).

Bad puck luck?

Every time Crawford turns in a performance like that I have visions of Bowman dusting off the cheque book again.

Every time Crawford turns in a game like that we should all be glad he didn’t dust off the Cheque book for Lehner.

Hopefully Bowman learned something with those signings last summer. He ended up with a whole bunch of nothing by the end of the season.
But imagination if we somehow end up catching that last playoff spot. Four players on LTIR and another two traded away at the TDL leaves our roster pretty depleted. Some of our players get very little ice time in the latter parts of games. How long would the core guys last as they are double shifting in tough playoff games?

I have always liked Kampf as a fourth line player, however it seems like he has regressed this year, or at least no improvement from last year. Is it me, or are others seeing the same?

To answer my own post:

Shaw has a history of concussion issues; deHaan was coming off of shoulder surgery; apparently, according to Colliton (quoted in Lazerus’ article in The Athletic), Smith has been dealing with back issues all season before finally deciding on back surgery.

Bowman traded for players with suspect physical situations.

He is completely insignificant. Gets 20 shifts a night and do you ever remember him doing anything meaningful? With Carpenter and now Highmore and likely Hagel to come, Kampf is excess baggage.

I don’t disagree about Kampf, particularly, but do 4th liners often do anything meaningful that you can really notice on TV?

Other than the occasional good shift in the offensive zone, if they’re doing their job, it’s in a good defensive effort - mostly noticeable (again, on TV) if they screw up.

He had more TOI last night than Caggiula, Highmore, Strome, Carpenter and Nylander. He had 0 SOG and 0 Hits. Pretty much the same as the game in Tampa. Ya, he'll kill some penalties and win around half of his faceoffs but that's about it.

At best he is a utility forward. And a slow skating one at that.

Foley is one of the very best. The thing that stands out, is that he genuinely loves the team he covers. You don't realize how good he is until you hear other teams' announcers. We've truly been blessed with both himself, and the late Lloyd Pettit. Could really get you revved up, just listening to his play-by-play voice. I miss old Lloyd.

Outstanding game for Crow tonite! Defense looks much better with Gus out of the picture. What took them so long? Makes you wonder out loud what our record would have been without him a quarter into the season.
- gabriel

Defense looks much better how, in the team photo ?????.
They were out shot 17 - 4 in a typical 3rd period laid-back coaching system by Colliton when they have a lead. Gimme a break. So how many games has Colliton's team given up 3rd period leads of 1,2,3,or 4 goals ???? I have lost count.

True that he made some nice changes tonight by sitting Nylander often, and juggling accordingly, but he continually over uses David Kampf who absolutely does nothing but eat ice time and belongs in Rockford permanently. What is his love for this guy ? Enough already.

Anybody notice that Strome didn't see the ice in OT either ? Dach will be the 2C next year....his improvement warrants it. He is now the number 2 guy in Colliton's push em back BS on the PP after Kane. It used to be Kane, then ADB.....not any more. Strome is in question now all summer. Trade or bridge deal ?

Back to their improved defense....
They gave up 40 shots AGAIN, and that's after playing a solid 1st period only giving up 5. CC to the rescue in P3 again. That is coaching !!

Lastly.....I hated the Kahun for Maata trade when it happened and always will.
Ba bye to Maata next year please and continue to play the kids. There is enough in the pipeline....forget about the playoffs. Build on the youth and please be careful with Corey Crawford. No need to risk injury..... let's see what Malcolm's got....or the Rockford duo.

Think we're on the same page, here. There ARE times when both he and Eddie go off-script and that's when they are not at their best. IMO. When they concentrate on the game itself, they're damn hard to beat.

Comparing Foley to Pettit will not work out well for Foley.

Pettit called the game - yes, mostly on radio, where he had to follow the play, but radio or TV, you knew what was going on, who had the puck, the result of the play.

Foley goes off-track way too often - to many stories, too many factoids, too many asides with Olczyk or Konroyd while the puck is in play. I want to know who had the puck, to whom he is passing, watch out for the wing on the other side....he missed a shot off the post last nite while recounting some story that I can’t even recall.

Unlike baseball, football, even basketball (with its many stoppages for free throws, etc.), hockey is a continuous game - quick breaks for face offs, but the puck is in motion for most of the non-intermission time. And the puck moves from player to player - even from team to team - much quicker than in other sports.

Give me someone who helps me follow the game - save the factoids for between periods or actual stoppages in play.

Would love to see them sneak into the playoffs but just don't see it happening. Would have to go on a tear so let's see. How do they get in?

- win all 5 games in regulation vs the cupcakes (ANA, DET, SJ, OTT, LA) 10pts
- take 3 of 4 pts in remaining 2 games vs MIN 3pts
- win in regulation vs NASH 2 pts
- take 6 of 8pts in winnable games left vs BUF, DAL, NYI, NYR 6pts

Would end up with 87 pts. Does that get them a WC spot though? Certainly possible with the remaining schedules for the other wild card contenders but this team has a knack for disappointing this year so as much as I'd love to be overly optimistic, the stars would all have to align just right AND they'd have to go on a tear themselves simultaneously. BUT it's possible!

MIN - 3 cupcakes and the rest are vs playoff teams
ARI - 3 cupcakes and the rest are vs playoff teams
NASH - 1 cupcake and the rest are vs playoff teams
PEG - 0 cupcakes and the rest are vs playoff teams

The race for the tournament:
Nash - +8
Cal - +7
Min - +7
Win - +5
AZ - +5
Chi - +1

Possible - not likely, I think, especially as they haven’t shown the ability to go on a consistent 17-game “hot streak”.

The crawl for a top-3 pick:

Det - -32
LAK - -9
Ott - -8
SJ - -5
Ana - -4
NJD - -2
Chi - +1
Buf - +1
Mon - +2

So - I would say - Hawks finished anywhere from 4th to 9th from the bottom.

I have a feeling that Lundqvist will be the Hawks goalie next season.
