I was never knew you needed all that before being a contender. What's the big deal about winning a round?

Name me a team that misses the playoffs for 10 years, loses in the 1st round for 3 years then wins the Cup out of nowhere playing the way the Leafs play.
If you look at teams that win Cups, they generally have a few playoff runs before they make it over the hump. Even the Blackhawks, who won it rather quickly after drafting Toews and Kane, had some playoff runs before they got the job done.
I really don't think anyone viewed the Blues as succesful. they were known as a team that had not seen a final in 50 years and could never get over the hump.

From 2011/2012 up until today, the teams with the most COMBINED points:
Pittsburgh - 882 (3 Cups)
Boston - 874 (1 Cup, 2 Final appearances)
St. Louis - 872 (1 Cup)
Washington - 871 (1 Cup)
Tampa Bay - 850 (1 Final appearance)
Chicago - 821* (3 Cups)
*Finished with 77 points but were on pace for 132 in 2012/2013 so if that was a full season they'd probably be 2nd.
Do those teams look like contenders of the past 8 years?
Yeah, they do. Because they are. The LA Kings got two Cups without being on that list because they play the opposite of the Leafs; gritty and defensively.
The Blues were a contender that needed a goalie to give them some good goaltending in the playoffs. They found him, they won a Cup.
The Leafs are a playoff team but not a contender. They need to fix the defense and learn to play playoff hockey before they can consider themselves a real contender.
