Strath Vegas was coined by a derby bartender like 20 years ago... everyone around here knows the nickname... actually a lot of people all over the province do.. when I’d head out of town to play a show I’d be surprised to find out just how many people would say stuff like “oh you’re from strath vegas?”

(frank) I think soupy even said it on HNIC once

He has always played for a defensively responsible team.

There is a very clear cause and effect between defensively responsible teams and the Vezina & Jennings trophies.

Occasionally you get a guy who just steals the show, but more often than not you have a good goalie who is being provided the opportunity to succeed.

This year Andersen has been below the expectations we have for him and those he has for himself - that is a given. But the team's inability to play defensively in front of him are so terribly obvious at times that it's hard to deny.

Now, I do contend that Andersen has been giving out more rebounds, stopping play less, not controlling pucks as well with his glove - which leads to more opportunities - but the defense gets hemmed in their zone and run around too often. They leave massive gaps too often. They allow a screen in front too often, and allow high tips too often. These are all things that a well run defense prevents far more often than the Leafs defense does. Some of these things are prevented when the goalie catches and freezes the puck or controls the rebound, but more often than not it ends up in the net with no chance for the goalie to control the placement of the puck or the pace of the play.

I was never knew you needed all that before being a contender. What's the big deal about winning a round?
- RogerRoeper

Name me a team that misses the playoffs for 10 years, loses in the 1st round for 3 years then wins the Cup out of nowhere playing the way the Leafs play.

If you look at teams that win Cups, they generally have a few playoff runs before they make it over the hump. Even the Blackhawks, who won it rather quickly after drafting Toews and Kane, had some playoff runs before they got the job done.

I really don't think anyone viewed the Blues as succesful. they were known as a team that had not seen a final in 50 years and could never get over the hump.

From 2011/2012 up until today, the teams with the most COMBINED points:

Pittsburgh - 882 (3 Cups)
Boston - 874 (1 Cup, 2 Final appearances)
St. Louis - 872 (1 Cup)
Washington - 871 (1 Cup)
Tampa Bay - 850 (1 Final appearance)
Chicago - 821* (3 Cups)

*Finished with 77 points but were on pace for 132 in 2012/2013 so if that was a full season they'd probably be 2nd.

Do those teams look like contenders of the past 8 years?

Yeah, they do. Because they are. The LA Kings got two Cups without being on that list because they play the opposite of the Leafs; gritty and defensively.

The Blues were a contender that needed a goalie to give them some good goaltending in the playoffs. They found him, they won a Cup.

The Leafs are a playoff team but not a contender. They need to fix the defense and learn to play playoff hockey before they can consider themselves a real contender.

I love how you undermine your entire argument but then quickly try to patch it up with an excuse at the end (grit and defence!!!)

It's called facts. Give it a try.

Do you not see the patterns and differences? Or shall we just fall back on the prayer and hope that "anything can happen" because hoping for miracles is somehow soothing?
