Can Cozens go to the Amerks at all until his WHL eligibility expires?
- SDSabre

After WHL playoffs conclude, he can go to Rochacha I gather.

I'm scared that they were, seemingly, willing to pay a decent price for Josh Anderson.

He's a good player, or at least he was, but this year's production is awful. Bum shoulder or not, he fell off a table. Shouldn't pay much for reclamation projects.

I don't know how he is doing either to be honest, they told Taylor to play him in all situations if needed. IMO , we need a legit 2nd line center and that's not Mitts.
- SABRES 89

He's played 29 games, 7G 19A -13

Honestly a guy who had played in the NHL for two years should be crushing it down there. by comparison, Tage Thompson went down last year and over the end of last year and the beginning of this year had 12G 9A +11 in 24 games.

Players have off-years.

He's shooting 1.6%. His career average is 10.5

He's primed to rebound

Should we not factor in he basically did nothing for the first 5 games?

He's been really good lately, just not dominant.

I still think he's FAR from being a total flame out

Can't argue that. Noticed that shooting percentage plummeted. I just worry about where he would rebound to. Don't want to pay for a 20g scorer only to get 20 points instead.

12a

They should plan on him being there for the entirety of next year, barring injuries on the Sabres

unless something really changes it sounds like he needs to start in Roch again next year. I don't think he is a flame out yet, but he just isn't living up to the unrealistic goals we had for him

21

6+6 in 16 games this year

Tage is going to need more time as well. He won't have played real hockey for 9-10 months once training camp rolls around. None of these guys (Ruotsalainen, Mitts, Tage) should be penciled in for roles in the NHL. Hopefully that is the lesson learned from the past 2 years. Get established hockey players

There are a lot of iffy options.

Cozens is having a better year in the WHL than Reinhart did at a year older, so I think he can skip the AHL and do okay...but I'd prefer at least 20 games with the Amercs. Ruotsoleinen I think is interesting, and I felt he never got much of a shot last summer, but he also looks like a guy who needs some AHL time. Pekar is having a good OHL season, but I think he needs the AHL as well. Asplund is ready now but won't score any more than Larsson does. Then there is still Mittelstadt, I can't imagine him starting next season in the AHL. Either he will be unloaded or he will be back here.

Lastly there is Kahun who seems to me to be worth at least a shot at center.

6 guys, one of them has to be a really good #3 center next year. Sign a #2 and I'm good.

- matty12345

No can do. Cozens is either back in Lethbridge next year or on the Sabres.

Cozen's won't be 20 til Feb 9 next year, and hasn't completed 4 years of OHL hockey. Therefore, my understanding is that next year it's NHL or OHL again for the Yukonian. I could be wrong though.

Might be right. I saw something on Twitter he'd be eligible to join Rochester after playoffs. If I am pushing fake news, apologies.

Wonder if he can join the Amerks for the remainder of this year as his 19/20 obligation of OHL/NHL has expired for the year? Stupid rule.

I don't understand the whole "we can't rush Cozens because it will hurt his development" idea...

One, if he makes the team, he makes the team. That's it - you can't rush that. You can't compare him to Mittelstadt, either. Mitts is an American kid who left college early, and Botts forced him into a 2C role way before seeing him play in an actual development league -NCAA isn't even close to the developmental leagues the NHL drafts from.

They are different players. Each player is. Go figure.

Cozens is shredding juniors this year. We really don't have much to bank on next year. Free agency is a ways off and who knows if any deals get made in the off-season. If he comes into training camp and lights it up, and then goes on a tear in pre-season, you absolutely at the bare minimum give him a 9-game look and if he fits the role, he stays. End of story.

If you think of hockey players as grocery items in a store, some people think of a an item on sale as undesirable. Like at Publix, they put various items on 2-for-1 sale...some people scoff at the Folgers Coffee there, but buy when it is regular priced the next week, lol.

Doesn't translate in all situations, but the point holds.

Imagine if Botts could have sealed the deal for Simmonds, Kahun, Trocheck, and Anderson.
I'd have been down with that at the additional cost of say Montour, Mitts, Pilut, Tage, and Larson.

Actually a good post, credit where credit is due.

Judge each player according to their play in camp/preseason. Rushing is when they fall short, but you force it.

It wouldn't surprise me if they play Mitts, Cozens and Kahun at 2C during pre season games next year.

Joe Thorton is a UFA. Yes, he's old and slow. But he can still pass. He could set Skinner up for 30. How about a 1 year X $2.5 million deal on July 1st to help apprentice Cozen/Mitts on being a centerman?

This assumes Botts's does not make the trade that we all want for a 2C.

Close, it’s WHL or NHL.
