Does it seem that these 2 moves are the flyers basically saying they are shelving Patrick for this year?
- Shrike

I don't think that's the case. If you want to call them anything wrt Patrick, I'd call them insurance policies, if anything. But I don't think they're related.

I agree that Thompson is more of an odd one compared to Grant, but I do feel the two additions make us better right now. I'm sure Bunnaman and Farabee will get back in the lineup sooner than later. Both have what it takes to play in the NHL, but I think both will be better for getting more playing time in the AHL. I like our forward depth heading down the stretch. If NoPa comes back and stays healthy, that will be a huge bonus.

Thompson is a player that can play on the PK and is 55% on faceoffs. What's odd about it. If he can take a few D zone draws and time on the PK to help keep Couturier and Giroux fresher and get them a few more O zone starts, is that not a positive? It's a long season. Having a veteran role player to take on some of the burden is a good move if they use him that way.

I don't think they are ruling him out but Patrick playing is remote at this point.

Distractions from the trade deadline behind, it’s back to earning points. Looking to watch a win tonight. Be nice to see what the Flyers have in the new arrivals.

Let’s go Flyers!

Fletcher had an interesting stat for Thompson yesterday during press conference. Said Thompson is top 3 in the NHL for Faceoffs on the right side as a left hand shot

Giroux-Couturier-Voracek
Laughton-Hayes-Konecny
JvR-Grant-Pitlick
Raffl-Thompson-NAK

This is how I would have gone, considering Laughton looks better at wing, has spent most the season there and has had solid chemistry with Hayes.

he also plays really well with Pitlick and to a lesser extent JVR

If I'm Fletcher, I would've targeted Namesikov and Grant, Thompson is very meh. Granted is all worked Cap wise.

Giroux-Couterier-Voracek
Laughton-Hayes-Konecny
JVR-Namesikov-Pitlik
Raffl-Grant-Aube-Kubel

Farabee has not playing so well, especially after coming back from the Flu. Kid lost weight and hasn't been himself, very evident last game. Laughton has been playing very well and played great with Hayes earlier in the year. Namesikov is skilled and would fit in nice would be worth a 4th round pick seeing where the Flyers currently sit and how stacked the metro got.

Patrick likely wont play with the Flyers until the last 5 games. Even if he is cleared for contact, he is likely going to go to the AHL for conditioning. Even then I think Im being a bit optimistic

I almost feel like we need Patrick back after these two moves. I totally understand that a Patrick might not be up to speed or standard right away but why keep him practicing if he wasn’t expected to return? Fletcher and Patrick have voiced that they’re hopeful he’ll play this season.

Patrick is such a wild card for many reasons...hasn't played in almost a year, little training or conditioning, hasn't been cleared for contact, let alone being able to predict how his head is going to hold up after a hit or two in a playoff (or playoff-like) game. I bench him for the season. Flyers have made it this far without him.

I liken it to Lindros coming back for that Devils series and then getting knocked out again a game or two later (can't remember exactly). Not that that would happen, but that's what's running through my head when I think about Patrick playing.

I just hope he still has a career in hockey.

I'm not saying they're the same player, but this is pretty much the line that management fed to fans for the 2016 acquisition of Boyd Gordon, who only lasted 13 games before being demoted and subsequently retiring.

Again, I'm not saying they're the same player, as I think Thompson is a better overall player. But the rationale you provided for his acquisition could be applied to both equally.

I’m almost expecting the hate to rain down on me but why wouldn’t AV place Laughton back to wing next to Hayes, where Laughton has played well, which puts Grant back into a third line center role?

Flyers did not have the cap space to add Namestikov without salary retained or trading a player off of the current roster.

The reasoning for adding Gordon was sound. I think you refuted your own point with the rest of what you posted.

I wonder if Farabee will stick with 49. He wore 28 in the USHL and BC, think he may be able to get that?

You are getting your wish. Although AV said yesterday that Grant would start out on a wing, the above are tonight's starting lines.
