It is absolutely a system issue. And those who blame it on the players, why why do you think they're out of position? That is because they don't understand/ feel comfortable with this system.

NO ONE seems to understand this system. Who are we modeling it after? Point to another team in the NHL that is running this system successfully....

Duncan Keith said it best at the beginning of the season, "This system is complex. There is a lot of thinking involved." When a 18 year vet says this, it tells you something!!

Never in my life have I seen so many players on a team out of position, chasing their opponent around the d zone like its a school yard. I have sympathy for this team because of how bad they are in their zone.

and then, JC has the tenacity to say 'we need to stop chasing' or 'we were caught in no mans land.' How about you adapt your system to play to the STRENGTHS of your team.

- catrisc

This...I can agree with. It needs to be simplified and if Colliton can't see that, he needs to go. Maybe they don't have the right skaters to make it work? Or maybe it just doesn't work, period. Either way, it's not working right now...and something needs to change.

Yeah you're starting to see why Carpenter is a 3/4th line center. He lacks the offensive play making ability for a 2C. If JC's focus is developing players, why not interchange Dach,Strome,Carpenter as the 2nd line center.

He seems hesitant to change things even after those combos have dried up.

- catrisc

Carpenter was brought in on a cost effective $1M/year contract to provide some grit, penalty kill help and energy/enthusiasm. ON A 4TH LINE.

Now this coach is using him with minutes as if his skillset is similar to Patrice Bergeron or Brayden Point. Its just ridiculous to expect better team results with that kind of personnel deployment.

Real hockey people around the NHL must be just shaking their heads at this kind of amateurish running of a big league team.

Is part of the reason why we cannot hold leads and falter late in games due to lack of depth in quality personnel across the lineup and not just on our D? When you shorten the bench later in the game, does the level of efficiency consequently drop for the ones left getting ice time?
The highest salary on the Blues is $7.5M. The depth that this pay structure allows is the reason the Blues score a bunch and take over late in the game.

Lets see how much they pay Pieterangelo next year, or do they let him walk in free agency?

Dietz is a homer. He's in a group on the bookface that I'm apart of (that is FULL of homers; jeez you think this place is bad...LOL) and all he does is PR spin s#it for how the Hawks are doing everything they can and everything is sunshine and roses.

Loved that Lehner called him out on that though lol

Agreed. Terrible mis-use of more than 1 good asset. Just think how Kane feels!

Also, can we stop the NHL experiment known as David Kampf.
Holy (frank), at least Q's love-child thing for Kruger made some sense.
However, the insanity of Kampf being deployed on a regular basis and getting the minutes he does boggles the mind. Talk about being the black hole of offense.

Kampf, on any other team, is a career AHL-er. Or a Swedish league all-star.

Gotta agree with many here about Colliton's bench coaching skills or lack thereof.
This guy is so overmatched against any NHL-caliber coach when it comes to deploying personnel and matching lines it's not funny any more.

He might have a great "theoretical" hockey mind. He's probably an awesome opponent on NHL2020 but the actual NHL? Not so much.

The coach has who the GM described as the next Karlsson playing timid and not moving his feet. Let the kid off the leash. They're going to ruin him like the Sox ruined pitchers in the late 90s.

Their zone exits are bad and players are not in predictable locations to get a pass because they chase guys like 9 year olds.

Their defenders still chase guys above the circles again because terrible coaching.

Playing coocoo on the first pairing lol. Sitting Carlson after a good game for Seeler who is Gilbert all over again is bad.

In terms of getting the best out of the players he has, this coach is terrible. In terms of line up decisions (kubalik was getting benched regularly to start the year) and in game adjustments this guy is clueless.

They are very clearly short 2 defenders and maybe 1 top 9 forward but it still shouldn't be this bad.

- fattybeef

Short about 5 Dmen and 6 forwards... We have the 3 best 4th lines in the league.

We need a change behind the bench, for sure.

Maatta should be moved for a 4th round pick before the draft. That 4th round pick and Smith could be traded to a team that has cap space for an AHL player that will never make the NHL. Cap savings $7,333,333. (We could also buy out Smith for a cap hit of 1,083,333 for next year and the year after. We could also waive him and take a $2,250,000 cap hit next year and be done with it.)

Show me Bergeron on our team. He's rated significantly higher than our #1 Captain #18.

Hate saying...I really do...but the Hawks need to suck a$$ the rest of the year and get another Top 5 pick. Someone who can jump in next year the same way Dach has.

This draft from everything I've seen is basically three guys who stand out and then a mix of everyone else. Lafreniere and Byfield are the 1-2 punch more than likely and then there's one Defensemen in Jamie Drysdale expected in the Top 10. Other than those three guys everyone else has been interchangeable with one another depending on who's scouting report you read.

Quinton Byfield is the guy I've liked for awhile, but I think won't be coming our way without some serious luck going our way.

Nope. He said tat the Hawks will have a proven number one goalie next year, but didn't commit to it being Crawford. He obviously does not know for sure who it will be because everyone is UFA right now, and things always change.

Unfortunately the era of dumping players for free cap space is a thing of the past. Only team that would qualify is Ottawa, and they only want players that cost less than their cap hit. Most everyone else is either at or not far under the cap, and if they are, they hold that space until at or near the trade deadline to do deals.

Wiz if you are out there. I see you have the Hawks selecting defenseman Jamie Drysdale with the 7th pick. How does he compare with last year's top D Bowen Byram?

Isn't that the same as last year? Hughes Kakko and then pick em. Didn't some have Dach rated as low as 8, and the Kings thought Dach would be there's at 5 because the Hawks would take Turcotte.

Yeah idk how accurate that is. I think you're seeing some posturing on both sides.

Lehner needs to save some face for how his comments were perceived about taking a "discount" to stay with the team.

Stan is trying to save face for trading a Top 10 Goalie and not getting a contract done.

Idk wtf Stan's plan is. My best guess at this point is that Stan wants to get (or possibly has a something in place) to get Ilya Sorokin from the Islanders and he's gonna either sign Crow to a one year deal to split time and help him with his transition over OR sign a veteran FA to a one year deal.

The question is: what is the price to get him?

Perhaps Stan thought he had a deal in place to trade Lehner and Gus to Carolina for a 1st and he then planned on flipping that to the Islanders to get Sorokin, but Carolina backed out once they began talks with their three other big deals they pulled off. Hence why the reports started leaking about him being traded to the Hawks, but it had to be backtracked due to the CHI-CAR deal not being completed yet. Who know's on that front. Time will tell what Stan's plan is going to be...if he's still around to make it happen.

Shot in the dark...

If they Hawks need to move on from Maatta could they perhaps call Tampa up and see if they could work something out with them? They've got three Defensemen under contract next year and need to add some depth there. I wonder if they could work something out with Tampa to get someone like Ondrej Palat (more pieces would probably need to be involved), but it could help them clear an additional 1.3M in cap space which is helpful when trying to sign both Anthony Cirelli and Mikhail Sergachev and give them another legit Defensemen to add to the fold. On the Hawks side, Palat is the kind of physical 200ft player that would look REALLY good in the Hawks Top 6. Wishful thinking but I figured I'd float it out there lol

Ohh for sure. That's why your scouting department is KEY. This is ONE area I think Stan is better than average at. He's not a complete idiot. He can spot talent when he sees it (easier when you are picking from the top of the crop than say guys who are gonna go late in the draft; though he's been good at that). He saw "IT" with Dach and took him 3rd when most people thought he'd go in the back half of the Top 10 or at the most 5 to the Kings.

Byfield is the guy I really like because he's got size (6'4 215!) at age 17 and he's got excellent speed too. These are two things the Hawks could use. Plus he plays Center as well.

If we don't get either of the top 2 guys then, same as last year before they took Dach, all I said was I want the guy who can help the Hawks be good sooner rather than later.
