The big concern is Freddy's numbers have been pretty poor for about 85 games now. That's a freaking long sample size.
No way in hell do you give this guy a big extension with the NHl going to more of a 2 goalie system.

- RogerRoeper

But its hasnt been for 85 games.

And no you do not sign him to a big extension, correct.

On the marner and Matthews argument:
Can you get a tagline d for 7mnl AAV?
If so - that argument isn't valid (since Nylander can be traded for that d)

- MaximusAurelius

You probably can. The point of that one is that people think that Nylander had the same value after crapping the bed last year. He had to up his value before he could be considered a tradeable asset.

The next part is finding a team that is willing to sacrifice a top-4 defenseman for offense. Which teams are in a position where they need a 23 year old offensive winger.

If you filter out guys who are not really in our best interest, or guys who are a bit older or overrated, or what-have-you, you end up with a list like:

Ekblad
Hamilton
Werenski
Provorov
Parayko
Jones
Slavin
Lindholm
Hanifin
McAvoy
Manson
Severson
Pesce

Now, out of that list, there are a number of players that simply aren't going to get traded (if I'm Carolina I'm not trading Slavin, and I'm probably not trading Hamilton; if I'm St. Louis I'm not trading Parayko; if I'm Florida I'm not trading Ekblad) . . . so you end up with a list of options that is significantly smaller like:

Provorov
Lindholm
Hanifin
Manson
Severson
Pesce

Hanifin has been poor; if Calgary wants to trade him, he's probably not worth Nylander. In fact I think given Nylander's 40-ish goal pace, he's probably better than Hanifin, Manson, Severson or Pesce on that list.

Your realistic targets are probably Provorov and Lindholm, and I'd lay odds that Philly doesn't want to trade Provorov - and I'm not even sure that I like Lindholm that much.

They are better under Keefe then they were with the previous coach. The eye test tells me that whenever they give up a goal, they don't know how to respond and then they end up giving up 2 or more goals in that same period
- PatC80

Meh, they were better for a bit under the new than they were under babs at the beginning of the season.
But not previous seasons....or at points in previous seasons.

Lots of time to change

Except against a zamboni driver, good d, or any team that nudges them off their game.
Ya we've talked about this to death. Freddy hasnt been and the team defense being garbage has made it worse.

- Fakepartofme

Here you go again

You always have to throw that in.

Don’t worry fake. Saying Andersen has sucked this season doesn’t excuse the D. Everything will be okay.

Stop making sense.

I’d rather just blame the D entirely and ignore facts and numbers.

- Santo_44

But I went and watched all the goals against Freddy in 2020 and I can confidently say your numbers are wrong.

I will post a 10,000 word essay on my impartial observations, just as soon as my nap time is over.

100% seems like he's just really grateful for everything.

Also LOL at the people who were mad at Nylander for being friendly with him at an optional skate on Sunday when the real story there is that Nylander showed up for an optional skate.

No chance they trade Marner. Theyd trade JT before that IMO. Local kid, young, and a play driver.
- Archaic

They both probably have no trade clauses.

TL;DR: The Leafs are awful against the trap.

I think it might be related to the passive system. When I first started thinking about the system, it made me think that it might be okay if you're leading but it really eats at the clock when you're losing.

If the other team has possession of the puck in your zone, you block the middle, prevent cross crease passes, and attempt to force them to the outside. This is great for prevention, but it lets the other team wear you down, run the clock, and while they have the puck in your zone, they're pretty f'n safe.

Similarly, because the Leafs are poor at puck retrieval in general, the shoot in is a poor option for them - unless it's Hyman. Clifford hits, but I don't think I've seen his physicality result in the acquisition of a puck. Anyway, if the shoot-in is just going to result in a turn-over giving the other team the puck (where they can traipse back up-ice and run the clock in the Leafs' zone for a while), the Leafs need to enter the zone with the puck, so clogging the neutral zone and trapping the blue line are very effective tools against the Leafs.

When the Leafs have the lead, they have the option to NOT force the zone entry and hold the puck until they like what they see - which forces the other team into being the aggressor, which usually opens up lanes that the Leafs can exploit - so trapping is a poor option when you're losing.

So, he's about half way through his 15 mins of fame?
He should parlay his appearance on the ice into an analyst position on SportsNet. He would certainly be better at it than Kevin Bieksa.

Yeah in a few years and after the movie comes out I don't think he'll really be remembered, but for now give the man his moment.
