I grew up in the Ballard years... We want to trade a 22 year-old like Marner? Really? I still remember us trading a 22 year-old Damphousse...

Not sure if that's true. Guys like Pageau now get 5 million per.
- RogerRoeper

So then guys like pageau are overpaid.

To consider them favorites in any possible matchup right now is just as laughable if you ask me.
- Scabeh

It’s the NHL you don’t need to be a favourite

It will be rather annoying hearing analysts hand TB and Boston the cup going into the playoffs yet again. They will hit on their “best team wins the cup” prediction one day.

Agreed, but I dont see any reason why they cant win against those teams. They could just as easily win as lose. They would all be close series.
- Archaic

Yup, I said as much earlier on.

Leafs are inconsistant as hell, but they can also play with the best if needed.

It's really about market value. What gets me is players salaries are seen in a duifferent category for the Leafs than any other team.

If Dubas added a 3rd liner for an entire draft and gave him 6 years it would be a disaster.

umm marner is pace to reach 96pts a career high.
So half of the above doesnt make sense.
Unless that was the point?

- Fakepartofme

He hasn’t driven play like he can.

5v5 he has been meh for his standards.

This team is capable of going on a huge run and going into the playoffs hot.

They are also capable of stinking it up and missing.

Its really pointless to talk trades now and I hope people just (frank)ing drop it. It is old news now. We still have a playoff run, hopefully playoffs and beautiful weather ahead. Who cares about trades.

- Santo_44

You are right.. Just that on here we only discuss hypotheticals, nothing else.

The fact is there are upsets every season. Then people forget it and act like only the favourites can win.

Nobody said they "want" to trade marner. this is relating to cap.

Anywho, no one is being traded for at 4.5 months if at all, the leafs are in a playoff fight.

I love how no one ever mentions who these mysterious DMen are we can trade Nylander or Marner for.

What team, other than ones who's GM is Peter Chiarelli trades a 22 year-old who had 94 points last year and on a pace for 96 this season?

Name the DMen.

- RogerRoeper

B-b-but he didn't do anything. Something should've been done. I don't know what, but anything would've been better than nothing.

Teams aren’t lining up to trade quality, young cost controlled RHD after Cbus completely robbed Nashville ...

Lessons were learned...

Just much too hard to find.

The cap is going up every year. It would be damn stupid to trade an elite early 20's star with Seattle and the new U.S tv contract coming up.

Dubas and Pridham are aware of what the cap # should be soon.

So wait, Marner doesn't have value?

Please name a defenceman who is worth Marner.

Yup. I bet the ask for Manson was (rightfully) insane. Same reason why the much-maligned Barrie wasn't moved, because nobody wanted to pay the (rightfully) high price for a top 4 RHD.

Trade Marner for a RHD. Just don't ask me who!
- RogerRoeper

the list of D I would trade Marner for 1 for 1 is ....not even a list
Its Jones

Age/contract is important...Hedman is great but also 28 now.

Manson looks ok but he is not close to worth Marner.

I think they will cut bait with a lot of other players first before even considering Marner.
- Archaic

Oh for sure.. Kap/Johnsson/Kerfoot/Dermott more likely trade candidates. I don't want the Leafs to trade any of the big 4.

I think there core is;

Matthews
Marner
Tavares
Nylander
Rielly
Muzzin
Andersen

- Fakepartofme

Pageau has hit 20 goals once in his career, this year. He has 40 points right now, and he just got 5M. He is overpayed big time. Kapanen just got 3.2M for 3 years and people were up in arms over his "overpayment"

I'm interested to hear what fans honestly think the problem is. It's cliche but with their talent, this shouldn't be happening.

To a lesser degree, the Preds are having the same issue (not nearly the talent level of the Leafs, but on paper they shouldn't be where they are) and everyone in Smashville is scratching their heads too. Both teams fired their coach and not much has changed. So if it wasn't really coaching, that the heck is it?

It's just interesting that some teams do this (The NFL's Cowboys come to mind) and I wonder what the solution is, other than blowing it up and starting over.

I feel like that's debatable.
