the way I see it, MB had the choice between a 3rd from WASH, where Kovy wants to go, and a conditionnal 2nd from another team where Kovy doesn't want to go.
he decided to please his player, no big deal imo.
people talk about that a lot, meanwhile Timmins sleeps like a baby.

But why try to please him? Because he wants to bring a over the hill player that will be out of gas by Xmas for next season? Again he is buying his own BS that this team is good but just unlucky. They will be on the outside looking in for as long as he is around.

Because it was most likely part of a behind the scene agreement he had with Kovalchuck when he signed him, he kept his word because Kovy delivered, nothing wrong with that

maybe, but I highly doubt Kovi signs in Mtl this summer. the guy wants to win a cup !!

the only way he signs here, imo, is if he does win the cup with WASH, and then wants to end his career in Mtl because he liked it. maybe he talked about it with MB, maybe they had a previous agreement, who knows? but I doubt it. I don't expect to see him again in bleu blanc rouge.

now why MB would want to please Kovy after playijng only 22 games with the team?
why not? PR move. maybe to show how well they treat UFAs, maybe Kovy knows people who know people... irrelevent imo. if MB had the choice between a 1st from BOS and a 3rd from WASH, Kovy would be a Bruins at this hour.

you know how I would fire MB and all his boys club asap, but on that one... meh. really not that important imo.

I still don’t get why they would bring Kovy back and why he would not try to maximize the return for him. MB is the ultimate fefan
- Symba007

Reading between the lines here, but I think it was a "maybe I give you a 2nd round pick tomorrow if I can't get the guy I'm after right now". Probably felt these offers weren't really serious and wanted to at least get something.

Kovalchuk kinda put Bergevin on the hot spot with his "there were better offers" comment.

The guy was at home with nobody giving him a chance. I don’t buy that MB needed to offer him a chance to go to a contender. I believe MB wants to bring him back next year and he sent him where he wanted to go for a playoffs run with the hope that Kovy will be more inclined to come back. Just watch MB give him 5M next year.

We will be at the same point next year, sellers

Can't wait until we retire Kovy's #17 jersey, should go well up there in the rafters with all the other Habs greats.

A 22 game career in Montreal surely deserves such an award.

This management team is incompetent and the sooner they're fired, the better we'll be.

You can't win the Stanley Cup at the trade deadline, but you sure can lose it. And boy o boy did Montreal lose big time! A loss so big it will cost them for years!!!

So let's see ...

- Bergy still believes in this core even though we missed the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years.

- We could have gotten a better draft pick but he wanted to do a favor to Kovy because of his long 22 games career with us.

- Our scouting staff is doing a bang up job even though almost none of our current roster players was drafted/developed in-house (and our AHL team has been brutal for the last 10 years). We've just been very unlucky.

- Looking at the future, Price and Weber will still be dominant (when they are in rocking chairs) by the time we are competitive again so it's a good idea to keep them.

Love this plan Bergy ... sign me up for season tickets.

I think it was about Bergy holding up his end of the deal, Kovalchuck made good on his... a 2nd would have been better but it would have been nothing had Kovalchuck not performed the way he did, I have no problem with Bergy keeping his word

you missed the point. he (frank)ed some good opportunities over and it cost him and now he's playing nicer.

i don't know what's more depressing... that he wanted to re-sign Nick Cousins in February or that Nick Cousins wasn't interested
- DoubleDown

We're lucky some players stop him from being even worse than he already is. (Cousins, Lucic, Gardiner, etc)

Radulov delivered and Markov in a big way. Bergevin is in over his head. Habs lose as he learns the ropes.

It's been 8 years, how many (frank)ing time does he need to learn the ropes?

Maybe we should get a zamboni goalie as a backup, couldn't hurt.
