should have bridged marner at $6M for 1 year.
$10.9M would still be ludicrous to pay him next year. - Tumbleweed
Without Ceci, you would still have Zaitsev, so you wouldn’t have had $6 milly to bridge Marner.
....aaaaaaaand he would not have signed it anyways. |

Can’t wait for Barrie to walk for nothing when we don’t even make the playoffs or at best squeak in and get bounced first round again. Having Barrie in the line does not make us any better or worse. Some might argue worse lol. There’s zero reason why he wasn’t traded. Dubas’ inexperience is really showing this year. Instead of making deals and working the phones he’s busy resigning Muzzin. We’re doomed to purgatory forever with this gm. Perennial playoff fringe team with Dubas as gm and his broken vision for a winner. - davecervo
He's still the GM of the Marlies. |

Didn't they get the memo?
They can't go for it, Carolina is already going for it! |

The only thing dubas is concerned about is maximizing his own tenure as a leafs GM.
The longer he stays, the more chance he'll have at a few other shots as a NHL GM.
Hence the 0 risk strategy. - MaximusAurelius
can you explain what would be a risk?
Like is stuff like trading Kadri not a risk?
what about trading Marleau with a 1st?
Signing muzzin age 30-34
what exactly qualifies as a risk? |

Zaitsev was a longer term problem than Ceci.
You weren't trading him for Ray Bourque. It was a cap room move. |

So for a team that has Auston Matthews producing 50-60 goals per year for 5 years under contract, you get rid of one of our other best play drivers for 4 1sts that may not show up in the line-up until year 3-4 of that Matthews contract? That puts us closer to the cup?
I get the frustration; we're ALL frustrated with this team's inability to DO anything. But keeping Patrick Marleau was NEVER the solution to these problems.
For the record, neither was keeping Nazem Kadri. We can argue that the acquisition of Barrie and Kerfoot was a poor one; the other option of Jankowski and Brodie from Calgary (rumoured) would have been even worse.
Trading away Zaitsev's $4.5m for the next 5 years for 1 year of Cody Ceci was also not the problem. Even had they walked away from Ceci, the ONLY option that they might have stumbled into there (which wasn't on the table at the time) would have been to resign Jake Gardiner.
Look at the options. The options have to present themselves as they present themselves. Sometimes you just can't force the situation. - Monkeypunk
Then why sign Matthews to only 5 years? He's adjusting due to his own mistakes. Bandaid the bandaid over the bandaid. I'm not saying it was an easy situation, but maybe that's why your don't have a rookie GM who's 35 years old trying to deal with it. |

It was another panic move. He sees a problem and thinks he has to dal with it that day. Wait it out. See what happens. Ceci was not an upgrade so why panic? |

Ah, so you’re on the platform with all the milfs and young hotties working on their bootys?
That might seem like I’m insulting you, but it’s actually tipping you my cap with respect. |

.... this exactly. He’s was inexperienced and had no business trying to sign those players to that kind of term and money. Lou should of stayed one more year and paid willy 6 and marner 9.5 |

Willy set the precedent. They were in first place yet panicked and caved. Why? Sometimes clubs have to be bumholes to players and that's the way it is. Yes, he produces at a good enough pace for the money, but when you don't need him to win you have all the leverage and can get him signed for less than he MIGHT be worth later. After that happened the rest of them were licking their chops. |

I dont get that stance at all.
From my seat, Dubas has done a lot of risky things...that are not working out great...so far.
Also Firing Babs when he did was a pretty big one, he could have waited it out and have an extra year to skate on Babs dime |
