Because Doughty is an actual winner. A consistent Norris candidate not a lockout Norris winner.
The defensive acumen is what we're after here. The offense, even though he'd score plenty of points, isn't even the main objective. We have Rielly who can score points. We need somebody steady who can defend, hit, block shots, kill penalties, shut down the best player, finish a game off, hold a lead, spark a comeback etc.
Cheaper in price and in quality. Leafs have the assets to get quality. - JohnFergusonJr
Fair enough. But I would still argue that you are hoping Doughty returns to his former self.
Fact is he could regress the same way PK has and we would have paid a premium in assets in order to be in (even more) cap hell.

So someone at work says to me that Ovechkin is a great goal scorer. The guys tells me he has 700 goals.
I'm like, dude, how can you cherry pick a stat like number of goals scored, to show he is a good goal scorer.
I went back and looked at all his goals.
There were a lot of goals where the defenseman lost his coverage of Ovechkin. Also, the goalie should have made the save in at least half of them. Thank God I looked more deeply into his cherry-picked stat.
It was armed with those facts, that I was able to prove to the buffoon that Ovechkin is, in fact, not a very good goal scorer. - Aetherial
Next time you criticize Matthews...I’ll look away. |

Save percentage has always been viewed in part as a team stat. Thinking it isn’t is how you move a blue chip prospect for Andrew Raysoft. - aminnes
Isn't GAA the team stat and SV% more the individual stat? |

One could argue that someone's day to day game is a better indication of what kind of player they are than referring to other sparse change of scenery scenarios. - TheMussel
That day to day game is always going to look like poop when you're playing on the 30th placed team because everything about that team is designed to tank. They traded pretty much everybody away. When a lot of the teams are still playing for playoff spots, what kind of day to day results are you going to get when you're surrounded by fringe NHLers, AHLers and prospects?
Like I said before, Phil Kessel on the Leafs vs. Phil Kessel on the Penguins. Same player, different situation, big difference. And Kessel is half the player Doughty is. |

Considering all of the moves Carolina made, it's odd they didn't pick up another goalie. - Thecakeisalie
Pretty dumb that they didn't. |

Didn't their decline start before all of their good players got traded away? Could Doughty's abilities be considered part of that decline? |

Niedermayer, Lidstrom, Chara, Pronger; all Cup winners / Norris winners from 30-35. Elite D don't fall apart at 30. PK isn't on that level and that's why we see that drop off. He's also very much distracted with his off-ice business activities. Doughty's body of work has proven that he is. He's just stuck on a bad team. |
