The one saving grace about the Leafs’ playoff chances is that Dale Tallon is so utterly incompetent. Forget a professional sports team, I wouldn’t trust that guy to run a lemonade stand.

I think he figured that Barrie was his best bet to try and make the playoffs ahead of Florida, and not spend future picks either....def a calculated risk.

I would have preferred the approach the Blues took a few years with shattenkirk, much more level headed approach.

Because the lower term lowered the asking price. They didn't buy any UFA years.

I would have preferred Matthews @ 8x10.5, but that was NEVER on the table. If we wanted to go to 8, they wanted 12.5 - 13m because they were leveraging the McDavid deal as the base comparable (this would have been a lower cap percentage). I'm not getting into whether I agree or disagree with the valuation, but's the why.

In many ways the problems all start when they signed Tavares. He elevated all contract expectations through comparison, and it also accelerated the team's performance expectations and it further limited our flexibility in terms of improving the Defense corps.

I'm not sure that NOT signing Tavares when you have the opportunity is the correct thing to do either.

Anything over 11 million should have easily been 8 years. My God man, you really think he deserved McDavid money. More excuses.

Barrie wasn’t getting moved without a RHD coming back.

You don’t throw in the towel when you’re still in the show; never going to happen guys.

I wish Barrie was sent packing for a decent draft pick and a prospect...but maybe wasnt on the table ..what ever

push to make the playoffs and hope something gels and Freddy goes on one of his heaters.

it is what it is, its just a game and a distraction...as i get older I stress less and less about this poop.

Still move Barrie out. take the best offer.
See if you can move those assets for a RHD that fits better. if not, wait.

- senstroll

My assumption is Rielly is further away than expected. If he was close I bet they moved Barrie today.

Willy set the precedent. They were in first place yet panicked and caved. Why? Sometimes clubs have to be bumholes to players and that's the way it is. Yes, he produces at a good enough pace for the money, but when you don't need him to win you have all the leverage and can get him signed for less than he MIGHT be worth later. After that happened the rest of them were licking their chops.
- aminnes

You need to step back on that, Willy is a good contract. If you want to hold Pastrnak's deal over people, then fine. There is one contract that's better than Willy's that was signed within eighteen month's of his, but it is by comparable standards a perfectly fine contract.

He also did not cave, since Nylander contacted him can came down from his reported initial asking price of $8.5m. The Leafs came up from their reported initial offer of $6.5m. So I'm in the dark as to where people keep saying this other than they are still emotionally hurt that anyone would hold out on the Leafs because they didn't like the contract they were being offered.

LOL are you people drunk? Whining about keeping Barrie. You guys are in a playoff spot. I would love to see the Habs in that spot right now. You can’t just trade away Barrie for prospects. Anything can happen in the playoffs if you make it.

And who cares if he walks for nothing. It happens. Last time I checked your captain is a superstar center that walked on your team for nothing.

They were in first place. They didn't need him to win. They had all the leverage and a 20 goals scoring floater got almost 7 million knowing they had other big signings coming and the cap would be strapped. The smart money would have been to move him out as once again, they didn't need him to win games which is kinda the entire point right?

That was my feeling as well, that the only thing Dubas would do is trade Barrie. It didn't happen, I assume it's because he couldn't get an RHD back.

Avoiding HNIC games helps immensely. Regret watching on Saturday for obvious reasons but I generally just drink and get angry listening to Hughsuck and co and wish I would’ve done something else instead.

Basically make Leafs games like 3rd or 4th on the list, just a hair above watching paint dry.

I would have unloaded Barrie as well, like the Blues/Statsny trade happened.....but I wouldn't give him away either...so I figure the right offer wasn't there, so keep him for a run to the playoffs

Tanking and being poop yet again isn't nothing. Getting nothing for UFAs for 4 years is nothing.
