I’m unsure why you are having trouble grasping the fact that Ceci was never going to take it to arbitration.
- Atomic Wedgie

i would rather have marleau's 6.25 playing out the last season than ceci's 4.5 mil, dubas has made so many mistakes he deserves to hit the chopping block.

Did the Lightning really give up a 1st round pick for Barclay Goodrow?
- RickJames77

Is that official? They needed someone to punch Bergeron in the face after Ritchie punches Kucherov in the face.

Brutal overpayment by Dubie the rainmaker again.
- MaximusAurelius

Muzzin had them over a barrel.

This team would be absolutely franked next year without him.

Can’t wait for Barrie to walk for nothing when we don’t even make the playoffs or at best squeak in and get bounced first round again. Having Barrie in the line does not make us any better or worse. Some might argue worse lol. There’s zero reason why he wasn’t traded. Dubas’ inexperience is really showing this year. Instead of making deals and working the phones he’s busy resigning Muzzin. We’re doomed to purgatory forever with this gm. Perennial playoff fringe team with Dubas as gm and his broken vision for a winner.

should have bridged marner at $6M for 1 year.

$10.9M would still be ludicrous to pay him next year.

Why sign Ceci at 4.5? Plenty of options. Lost Marner? Oh, you mean 4 firsts? Cool.
- aminnes

So for a team that has Auston Matthews producing 50-60 goals per year for 5 years under contract, you get rid of one of our other best play drivers for 4 1sts that may not show up in the line-up until year 3-4 of that Matthews contract? That puts us closer to the cup?

I get the frustration; we're ALL frustrated with this team's inability to DO anything. But keeping Patrick Marleau was NEVER the solution to these problems.

For the record, neither was keeping Nazem Kadri. We can argue that the acquisition of Barrie and Kerfoot was a poor one; the other option of Jankowski and Brodie from Calgary (rumoured) would have been even worse.

Trading away Zaitsev's $4.5m for the next 5 years for 1 year of Cody Ceci was also not the problem. Even had they walked away from Ceci, the ONLY option that they might have stumbled into there (which wasn't on the table at the time) would have been to resign Jake Gardiner.

Look at the options. The options have to present themselves as they present themselves. Sometimes you just can't force the situation.

Muzzin would have gotten more $$$ and term as UFA. How is it overpayment?

He plays the minutes and situations to deserve that money and this team has no replacement for him.

He wanted to get rid of the boat anchor of a Zaitsev contract.
- Atomic Wedgie

zaitsev wanted to be traded and that contract was not a boat anchor, they could have bogosian'd if it really came down to it.

The only thing dubas is concerned about is maximizing his own tenure as a leafs GM.
The longer he stays, the more chance he'll have at a few other shots as a NHL GM.
Hence the 0 risk strategy.

Or nobody offer-sheets Marner, and you have him sit at home.

I’m guessing you were not particularly supportive when Willie was not on the ice.

- Atomic Wedgie

The Leafs were in first place when Willy was not on the ice.

Ceci wasn't the offset from Marleau. Ceci was the offset from Zaitsev.

If you didn't pay for Ceci then you have the craphole defense we're playing right NOW all season. Then you'd wish you hadn't let Ceci walk for nothing. There was NOTHING else available when they opted to sign Ceci.
