not sexy but no risk
- turbo044

its a risk having him on the ice, that is the issue.

I am no Botts supporter, but I feel this is a good move. This team needs toughness and Simmonds is tough. For the price it’s a good move. Now get a center and a goalie.

Botts is obviously buying, let’s see him actually add what this team realistically needs to make a push.

- Beethoven

Bingo...except it should have been Simmonds over Frolik a month ago.

We have a Carter Hutton for you.
- ImThatGuy

The Oilers want cheap speed up front. They can have Frolic if they stock our pop machine.

Simmonds is a Girgensons replacement for when they inevitably trade him. And I think they will get a decent return

My favorite memory of Simmer. Had to be at least 5 years ago now. Simmer crushes Ennis, borderline dirty. Weber skates down to address him and Simmer beat the poop out of him before Weber even got his gloves off.

Who wants it! Who wants it!

Simmonds is definitely not a risk.

I would give any team a 5th to take Hutton. McCabe could be had for cheap also
- turbo044

Wait so acquire Simmonds because he brings grit, leadership, but is terrible hokey player.

Trade McCabe who brings grit, leadership, but is a terrible hockey player.

This is absolutely a case of shiny new toy syndrome.

Their value is also felt less by the team when it's not good. These off ice qualities matter but it's a cart before the horse situation. You add that value after you look at your team and say "yeah we're in a spot where we have the talent to make some noise and would like someone to bring that character"
- Michael Ghofrani

Like possibly a young team 6 points out with a game in hand that's gone 7-2-1 in their last 10?

Simmonds is going to score 2 goals early in the first period on Wednesday and then disappear for the rest of the season...just like Steve Bernier in 2008.

more like a team who knows its going to the playoffs and is a little thin on bottom 6 depth.

I mean if the fan base in general likes it it's a win for him because it helps him keep his job and I can't really knock that

The move itself doesn't bother me. I just expect it to have absolutely zero impact on the win column.
- buffalofan19

you're prob right.

Here's my guess for the rest of the day:

Sheary traded for a 3rd
Erod traded for a 4th
Pominville signed
Hutton traded with another goalie aquired (wishful thinking)

Big Bear was more like Bigfoot. There was one unconfirmed sighting and then he wasn't spotted again.

It should also be noted that Wayne Simmonds won the Messier Leadership Award last year. Obviously no concern about adding a guy like that to the locker room.

Disasterous is a bit strong. Analytics aint everything - don't measure heart, locker room presence, etc...
- turbo044

Well, a young team who had playoff aspirations going in to the season just ate half his salary and only got a 5th round pick in return

so it would seem pretty clear they think he has negative value being on the roster

Hearing #isles are working on a deal that would reunite Zach Parise and GM Lou Lamoriello. Not done yet.

I said it at the beginning of the year, playing meaningful hockey into March will benefit this team long term. Whether they make it or not (not likely, I know) the confidence of just knowing you belong can go a ways. I think this was a move around that. Even if it's just to hang onto where they are right now in the standings.

#Sens sent their seventh round pick in 2020 and Aaron Luchuk to Montreal for forward Matthew Peca.

Don't know if he's the right one, but every young team could use one
- Buff36

I'll certainly agree with that.
For people here just to assume that he isn't is simply preposterous.

I'm listening to folks like Brain Burke on SNTrade center speak glowingly about his leadership etc. on and off the ice which is an ingredient that this particular group is missing.

You get to see his leadership ability in a playoff chase in exchange for a 5th rounder.

Seems like a smart deal to me but then again, some of the know it alls here know better.🤦‍♂️
