Alright I'm outta here. Thought I'd give the site a chance to support a friend on here but now I see why HockeyBuzz has the reputation of being a site for homers and the intellectually disabled. There are some good guys on here but the majority of you are a bunch of troglodytes who seem perfectly content making arguments not based on numbers, stats or even logic in general. It's no wonder so many people come here and then leave. Please for the love of god stay here forever. You'd be doing the entire Hawks fanbase a favor.

So - is it true (as has been reported by Lazarus) that Lehner offered to sign a three-year contract for less money from the Hawks, but a deal was never offered to him?

If true (and not knowing anything more, I’m a bit doubtful), why didn’t Stan make the offer? If true, did the Hawks become disillusioned with his play, personality, attitude?

- StLBravesFan

I lean on not true (like you I don't have access to anything that can prove one way or another). My thoughts on this are simply because he stated numerous times that he would not take a discount.

I think Stan didn't make an offer because he wants to spend minimally on the goalie position in the next couple of years and Lehner wasn't going to go for that (even at a discount) compared to what else he could get in FA.

You never know it could have been that during trade talks they found out that Subban was available (maybe someone in the scouting dept saw something in him), and that was the factor that made them turn away from Lehner long term. I wish we had direct access to all the conversations that take place withing the organization (especially during the TDL and draft). It might answer a bunch of our questions.

first i am hearing of this - from CSN Chicago - why did the Leafs have to retain some salary? we have plenty of cap space....thoughts?

The Blackhawks made a major last-minute trade deadline move Monday, dealing goalie Robin Lehner to the Vegas Golden Knights in a three-team deal.

Chicago sent Lehner to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for winger Martins Dzierkals, a 22-year-old unsigned draft pick. Lehner and Dzierkals were then traded to Vegas, netting the Blackhawks goaltender Malcolm Subban, defenseman Slava Demin and Vegas' second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Toronto received Vegas' fifth-round pick and retained some of Lehner's salary for helping complete the deal.

Lehner was pretty adamant he wasn't taking a discount because he earned it soooooo not sure what this 3 year discount is.

He also seems like a headcase based on how he's thrown the team in front of him under the bus and left three places now that should have signed him long term based on age and numbers.

My comment is not driven by my like or dislike of a player, but more of a commentary on the echo chamber syndrome here. Not directed at you.

While things went south with the team over the past few weeks, I have been pleased as a fan with the effort. The NHL is the worlds most competitive league, with an 82 game playoff and then a tournament at the end.

And as much as the bi polar crowd likes to beat the team down, as I have said many times over the past few years, the team is simply 1 point a month (Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb) from being right there for playoff contention. This is a razor thin margin. 2 points a month and you are up there with the contenders.

Yes I know that sneaking into the playoffs does not mean you will be a cup favorite, it is still the first step.

I just do not understand the fan psychology of wanting to lose, as a way of getting better. Some I believe feel there is some sort of wisdom in this.

Good luck to Gus and Lehner. Hopefully you are right and they will give those minutes to a young prospect.

As far as next whipping boy, I was kidding. Saad gets way too much grief here, as he is a solid contributor. I prefer to be optimistic and root for my guys.

- TrueGrit

This remains a false narrative, trotted out by losers to make themselves feel better.

A wise man once said, “You are what your record says you are”. The Blackhawks are currently the 25 best team in the NHL.

While it’s true that they may have needed only an additional point or two a month, the truth is, they weren’t good enough to earn those few extra points.

If you are a salesperson, and miss your monthly quota by ‘only’ 1 sale a month, you will soon be unemployed. If you are a CEO, and only come close to meeting your earnings forecasts, but don’t exceed them, you’ll soon be looking for another job.

I’m looking forward to the Blackhawks being a playoff team again, hopefully next season. But they’re not there yet, and all the excuses you come up with aren’t going to get them there. They need to be better, from the top of the organization, to the bottom.

So how is it different...if Stan allegedly held out because "he thought" players were worth more, but they actually weren't..... to fans here complaining that "all he got" was a 2nd, 3rd and prospect for them?

Isnt that doing the exact same thing hes being criticized for?

Those of you who thought we didn't get enough for Gus, what do you place his value at? Just trying to figure out what fair value is for Gus.
- 333inthe3rd

Gus for a 3rd is what thought be a good return. Lenher return was ok but thought a forward prospect is what i was i expecting. If demin turns out to contribute at the nhl level and solid d man then the return was good. Subban is just ok. Seen him play when i was in Vegas last year um he was just bad.

Yesterday - Gustafsson sucks, he's terrible, I'll drive him to the airport myself

Today - All Stan could get for Gustafsson was a 3rd round pick? He should be fired.

What will be interesting is the goaltending situation next season. While I am looking forward to seeing what Subban can do I'm not too comfortable with a Crawford/Subban duo for an entire season. If Crawford can stay healthy then it's no worry, but that's a risk.

This assumes that Crawford will be the #1 next season.

So it looks like Vegas only pays the prorated amount of $1.4m of his annual salary we're still paying the prorated amount of $2.5m of his annual salary and Toronto is paying the prorated amount the remainder of his annual salary.

I would have preferred for Stan to sign Lehner to a 4-5 year deal, they won't be able to get a goalie on the free agent market for that term that's ask good as him.

I would assume they'll go with Crawford and I wouldn't be surprised to see Stan upgrade the back-up goalie position in the summer.

Third round pick is fine. Would have been more if they moved him last year...

Either at the TDL or in the summer.

Maybe we traded Lehner because a trade for Sorokin was legitimate but had to wait for some hurdle like signing him to a contract.

Who saw them signing Lehner to a 1yr deal this past off season?

Anything can change/happen between now and start of free agency...even them circling back to Lehner while obtaining the assets they did today

It seems that there might be something to the Hawks getting that Russian goalie.

If his teammates thought it was a done deal, they probably got it from the goalie, who got it from his agent, before some kind of snafu was found.

Yesterday also -a lot of posters expressed that they would have been happy with a 5th for Gus. Good thing they were not doing the negotiating for Stan.

Again, it comes back to the root of it.....

Everyone and their brother knew the Hawks had to deal Gus. THey sat him out and basically sent smoke signals it was happening. However, I didn't see Calgary being a destination for him...….Did anyone see Vegas coming to get Lehner?

So as far as Lazerus goes....is it possible his "sources" is an agent? Somebody planting a seed that makes the Hawks look bad in the PR department? I mean Lehner who never shy'd away from any microphone came out said he wasn't going to give a discount to the Hawks. Now all of sudden AFTER he is dealt it's leaked he was willing to take a bridge deal for 3 years and a discount? really? Sounds like to me about a guy trying to save face, or an agent for that matter.

I am perfectly OK with what the Hawks got back for both. THey got more pieces back to hopefully build for the future in either using the picks to trade for a NHL ready asset OR draft some more.

As far as Lehner....I get the hate by some towards the organization. Lehner is a legit 1 goalie....I believe he finished in the top 3 for the Vezina just last year, so the Toews Drags 4 Daze post was somewhat accurate. He also played very well until multiple CHECK MARK SOURCES leaked the supposedly extension talks broke off and while shocking....the guy was human and probably let the off ice issues with his contract derail his game a bit. It happened. On top of that everyone clamoring for this guy to be signed LT, see the rink.com, what happens if he has an issue and the Hawks have ALL this cap money AND term locked into this guy?

If this was 2013, with their roster AND needing a goalie (take CC out of it) it may be worth it.....FOr a team that is obviously rebuilding? NO. THey need cap flexibility and Bowman turned 5 million, prorated to today, into a 2nd, another stay at home D man, and a RFA goalie who can battle Delia, and Lakinean (spell) to possibly back up CC.....to write off Suban (spell) is a little harsh. Guy has 30 career games, a 2.97 GAA, and a .899%....

What we also DO NOT know is IF Bowman planted trades for the draft.....Keith, Kane, Saad? WHo knows......I think Kane would take a MASSIVE haul to get the Hawks to deal him.....Keith may have to ask the Hawks (same with Kane) and Saad only has a year left and out of the 3...THe Hawks have the ENTIRE market they can shop Saad with.

I just don't get the anger right now for Hawks fans thinking the window is still open and how this team SHOULD be going all IN for players....its not happening.
